The McIlhenny Company has made Tabasco sauce using the same recipe since 1868: red peppers, vinegar, and salt. Since the hot sauce is aged in bourbon barrels, it takes five years to fill just one bottle. And most of this process still happens where it all began: Avery Island, Louisiana. Six generations of McIlhennys have lived on the island. But with disappearing marshes and more intense storms along the coast, the family is fighting to protect their, and the hot sauce's, home.

As tensions with China build and the US military sends more troops to the Asia-Pacific region, soldiers with the skills to fight and survive in the jungle are increasingly vital. The US Army trains soldiers for jungle warfare at the 25th Infantry Division's Lightning Academy on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Insider's chief video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent 12 days inside the Army's Jungle Operations Training Course, where a cross section of soldiers of various ranks and experience levels learn to fight, move, and survive in the jungle. Eighty students begin the course on day one, but only 51 will make it to graduation. The rest are dropped from the course by failing one of five critical tests.

On day nine, students begin a three-day culminating exercise that incorporates the skills and lessons taught in the course, such as rope systems, rappelling, survival skills, small-unit tactics, and land navigation. Students who graduate from the course receive the Army’s coveted jungle tab.

Every day at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, a staff of over 200 people cooks and serves over 13,000 meals for the 4,400 Army cadets attending the school.

The cadets eat in historic Washington Hall, named after George Washington. Of the three meals served each day, lunch is the most complex. Students only have 25 minutes to enter the mess hall, complete a series of traditions and customs, and then eat their meal before returning to class.

Insider was given rare access to the prestigious dining hall to see how the staff prepares nutritious meals for the next generation of Army leadership.

Editor's note: An earlier version of the video featured a soundbite from a West Point dietician that said that the cadets are provided with 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day from the mess hall. The cadets are provided 1,200 to 1,500 calories per meal.

Sake has been brewed in Japan for thousands of years. The most expensive kind, made with polished grains of rice, is called junmai daiginjo. One bottle can easily cost over $100. And the more the rice is polished, the more expensive the sake. Niizawa Brewery, in Japan's Miyagi Prefecture, brews sake with rice polished to less than 1% of its original size. The most expensive bottles of this sake cost almost $10,000. We followed a master sake brewer to find out how sake is made and why some bottles can be so expensive.

Royal jelly is a secretion made by honeybee workers to feed larvae of future queen bees. All bees consume royal jelly, but once a queen is selected, workers then feed on pollen and honey, while only the queen feeds on the prized jelly. Referred to as the "superfood of the beehive," royal jelly contains much more nutrients than honey and is 20 times more expensive. Since the 1980s, production worldwide has grown from 700 to nearly 4,000 metric tons. Royal jelly can be found in its natural form, as a health supplement, or in skincare products, and it can reach $125 per pound. But extracting royal jelly requires great precision, as the process can only be done by hand.

Ayam Cemani is a rare breed of chicken that is completely black, including its organs, muscles, and bones. This chicken originates in Indonesia, where many locals keep the bird as a treasured pet. Cemani, pronounced che-MA-ni in Indonesian and seh-MA-ni by many English speakers, comes from Sanskrit and means “jet black.” As a result of a condition called fibromelanosis, Cemani chickens have 10 times as much melanin as most chicken breeds. While the price varies, a high-quality Ayam Cemani can sell for over $6,000, and a single egg can fetch as much as $16. But what makes these chickens so special? And why are they so expensive?

The Moulin Rouge in Paris opened in 1889 in Paris’ Montmarte district as a place where people from all walks of life could come to mingle and enjoy music, dance, and comedy. It is credited for making the cancan dance famous, which is still performed over 130 years later. In the 20th century, the venue survived a fire, two world wars, and its share of criticism for the cancan dance. Despite it all, the Parisian theater remained an important cultural hub and has inspired Hollywood films and Broadway musicals. Their current show Féerie cost 8 million euros to create, and half of that went only to the costumes. The dancers wear 1,000 outfits adorned with feathers, rhinestones, and sequins. Féerie runs 365 days a year with 2 shows every night.

Military vehicle historian and armor officer Nicholas Moran rates more tank battles in movies and television for realism.

Moran breaks down the accuracy of World War II tanks in "Band of Brothers" E3 (2001), "T-34" (2019), and "Fury" (2014) with Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf. He looks at World War I tanks and other armored vehicles in "All Quiet on the Western Front" (2022), "Rambo III" (1988) with Sylvester Stallone, and "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012) featuring Christian Bale. Moran also explains the realism of tank battles on ice, sand, and mountainous terrain in "The Beast" (1988), "Operation Red Sea" (2018), and "The Fate of the Furious" (2017) with Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel.

Moran is an armor officer on M1 Abrams tanks and M3 Bradleys, with combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is the in-house historian for the online game "World of Tanks," and he has a YouTube channel covering armored history.
