Links between holiday traditions and pagan culture are well established - and occasionally celebrated - but there are also a lot of misconceptions about paganism that make the word itself a bit taboo. Paganism isn't something to be feared or shunned. In Latin, "pagan" was simply the word for villager or civilian. Religious connotations that developed during the Middle Ages made pagans into heathens rather than outsiders. With all that in mind, there continues to be a pervasive presence of paganism in the modern world.

President Park Geun-hye - on a state visit to Switzerland - has been busy promoting Korean culture and taking part in various performance-related events.
Our presidential office correspondent Eoh Jin-joo, who is traveling with the president, sends us this report from Bern.
President Park has been putting great emphasis on culture... as a means to better communicate and connect with local people... when she travels to different countries.
She made sure to keep this tradition going in Switzerland.
The president attended the "Korea Fantasy" on Sunday, a performance composed of various Korean traditional dances by the National Theatre of Korea,... at the Paul Klee Center in Bern.
The Korea Fantasy has been performed more than 600 times in some 60 countries, to promote Korean dance to global audiences.

"Korean traditional dance is known for its dynamism, but also for its stillness. Did you feel that way today?"

President Park stressed that culture connects the minds of people living in different circumstances and using different languages.... and will eventually bring everyone together.

The presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae says the president's participation in the event demonstrates her determination to expand the Korean Wave, or Hallyu, which is currently centered around Korean dramas and pop culture,... to traditional culture... and even fine art .
Ahead of the performance,... President Park also looked around an exhibition on the life and work of German-Swiss painter Paul Klee,... who is known for painting the first abstract works in the 20th century, along with Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky.

"I am very lucky to have the chance to see such great works."

She also met with six pro-Korean figures in Switzerland, three of whom worked at the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission in Korea, and called on them to act as a bridge between the two nations in their respective sectors.

"President Park is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President of the Swiss Confederation Didier Burkhalter on Monday, and seek ways to strengthen cooperation in the sector of advance technology and benchmark Switzerland's educational system.
Eoh Jin-joo, Arirang News, Bern."

지역과 일상에서 즐기는 문화 활동, 문화의 달 맞아 제주서 기념행사

October is culture month in South Korea, encouraging people to find time to enjoy diverse arts and activities the nation has to offer.
A special ceremony to promote Culture Month took place on Saturday on the southern island of Jeju.
Our Lee Min-sun was there and files this report. Make cultural activities part of your everyday life in your region. That's the aim of this year's culture month and culture day.
The month of October is designated by the South Korean government as a month of culture to celebrate everything that makes the country unique. And the third Saturday of the month is designated as a cultural day.
Commemorative events are held in cities dotted across the country to raise public interest in regional culture. This year, the event is held on South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju, a popular holiday destination for locals and foreigners alike.
The grand celebration ceremony takes place on an outdoor stage along the Sanjicheon stream with a giant moon symbolizing the ceremony's theme. Despite chilly autumn air, hundreds of Jeju residents, visitors and government officials attended Saturday night's ceremony.
"Culture has the power to make people happy and a country stronger. This ceremony in Jeju will serve as a medium to make culture available to everyone no matter where they live, and establish a more regional-based focus on culture."
Elements of fire and water, which symbolize the island s geological character, is the main stage effect. Performances incorporating Jeju's folklore and unique culture make full use of the natural settings.
Some of Jeju's best-known tourist attractions in the old town are the backdrop for culture day events that run through Sunday. A usually quiet street is bustling with an international flavor of music, dancing, and laughter. For those wanting a souvenir, visitors can also get their caricature drawn.
"The Chilseong-ro shopping arcade in central Jeju was once home to old, empty stores, but it's now a cultural experience space called moonlight playground. Visitors can pop into different stores offering art exhibitions, craft making and more."
Along with cultural performances and hands-on experiences for visitors, artists and residents also gather for debate sessions to share their experiences and discuss ways to incorporate regional characteristics into their work.
Visitors from ASEAN countries also joined the event ahead of next month's special Korea-ASEAN summit in Busan.
However, the fun isn't limited to Jeju, events celebrating October - the month of culture in South Korea -- are also taking place in 17 cities nationwide.
Lee Min-sun Arirang News, Jeju.

외국인을 위한 한국 문화 체험 행사 눈길… 원주 향교, 송파구 등서 개최

Close to 2 million foreigners live in South Korea... making up nearly 4 percent of the population.
Various cultural events are held to introduce Korean culture and help them adjust.
Kim Jung-sil went to check it out.

What you are looking at is a traditional Korean school called "Hyanggyo".
This one was built during the Goryeo dynasty some 9 centuries ago...
In the past, Hyanggyo served as what we would now call middle or high schools.
Around a dozen foreigners from around the world began their day by learning about traditional Korean clothing, the Hanbok.
They then headed outside to the yard of Hyanggyo and tried their hand at making Korean rice cake, "Tteok".

“Foreigners from countries including the U.S., China, and Vietnam gathered here in Hyanggyo of Wonju city, in order to experience various Korean cultures… one of which is 'Tteok Mechigi', a traditional way of making rice cake by pounding rice.”

“I feel closer to my wife’s culture and I feel closer to my daughter’s culture. So, it’s like my culture now.”

I asked the principal of the Hyanggyo why he held this event.
"I thought that by learning Korean culture the foreigners will be able to bond with Korean people and live more happily here."

Another event was held in Seoul’s Songpa-gu district.
This time, a Korean cooking class for foreigners.
It's an annual event to teach foreigners how to make Korean dishes from scratch.
This year's menu was a fusion between Korean food and western dishes, Bulgogi Fajita and Truffle Tteokbokki.
“It is very important to give them the opportunity or the experience of Korean culture.”

“So Korean food is very good for them.”

Another event held by the district to attract visitors was a "Luminarie festival" at the district's Seokchonhosu lake... where some of the most beautiful scenery that Seoul can offer is on display.

"It's very nice, it's very beautiful, there are a lot of lights. It has a very Christmassy atmosphere."
Local authorities said they are hosting the events in the hope that many foreigners will visit to learn and understand South Korean culture.

Hello Everyone,👋👋👋
This video is about Cultural Festivals In the World
@topsevenworld

01.Sinhala and Tamil New Year
Sinhala and Tamil New Year (13th and 14th of April) is celebrated by both the Sinhalese people as well as Tamils who live in Sri Lanka. This is considered as one of the most significant events or festivals for the entire country as it embraces the dawn of the traditional New Year. People of all walks of life celebrate the new year as it allows them to turn to a new page in life. Before the new year dawns, there is an auspicious time during which people engage in religious activities. Buddhists go to the temple and offer flowers to Lord Buddha while Hindus go to Kovil. Once the auspicious time comes to an end, the entire country celebrates the new year at the same time by following traditional practices such as lighting the hearth, eating with one’s family, engaging in work etc.
During the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, people make special traditional cuisine such as kavum, kokis, aluwa, asmi etc. Also, they engage in traditional games, play drums known as the rabana, visit relatives, and spend the day in harmony with others.

02.RIO CARNIVAL (BRAZIL)
The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is a festival held before Lent every year and considered the biggest carnival in the world with two million people per day on the streets. The typical Rio carnival parade is filled with revelers, floats, and adornments from numerous samba schools which are located in Rio.
Dressed in beautiful costumes these amazing dancers parade through the Sambadrome; official balls & parties are held at Copacabana Palace. And the streets come alive with the mini festivals instigated by locals where formality and structure are left far behind as music and dancing become the order of the day.
.
03.LA TOMATINA (SPAIN)
La Tomatina Festival takes place in a Spanish town in Valencia . it was a crazy fun festival. At around 10 am, the tomato war is starting. A few small trucks go inside the town, bringing with them kilos and kilos of tomatoes. They let the tomatoes drop to the ground, and that signals the beginning of the party. If you´ve ever wondered if this is painful, then you shouldn´t worry. Most of time, the tomatoes you will get are the mashed or crushed tomatoes that you can use to throw to your friends and even to strangers also partaking in the party. You´ll definitely get dirty.

04.DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (DAY OF THE DEAD) (MEXICO)
Dia de los Meurtos is tradition that has been around for centuries, and although has been celebrated in a variety of ways, it has been never been to the extent of the opening scene’s of the James Bond movie, Spectre! The interest in the lavish parade depicted in the movie has forced the Mexican Government to turn it into a reality, with the first official Day of the Dead Parade held in 2016.

05.COMIC CON INTERNATIONAL (USA)
With the rise in popularity of animated films, western cartoons and Anime as well as video games and other fantasy novels, the franchise of Comicon has been growing over the years since the 70’s. Basically, this festival features a four-day event that is held at San Diego Convention Center in California.
A wide variety of different genre in the fantasy world are all over the place during the whole event. Some famous movie and TV personalities can also be seen in this big event. In 2015, there were a lot of personalities that showed up in the event such as the all beautiful Wonderwoman, Wolverine, Jennifer Lawrence, and even the all popular and talkative Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds.

06.HOLI (INDIA)
The annual Holi Festival celebration in India is known for its vibrant display of color and beautiful meaning of unity. Each year the Indian people come together to throw colors and celebrate how the color unifies them and washes away their differences for the duration of the day. Every person in India celebrates the holiday and it is truly a spectacle to behold for a foreign visitor.

07.SKY LANTERN FESTIVAL (TAIWAN)
According to the elders of Pingxi, the Sky Lantern Festival originated in the Xing Dynasty, more than two thousand years ago. At that time, bands of outlaws frequently raided the lowland villages, forcing residents to seek refuge in the mountains.
Village watchmen used “fire balloons” as signals to inform the residents that their houses were safe once again and when those hiding in the hills saw the celestial flares, they knew it was time to go home.
Today these lanterns have two main purposes. One: they display scribbled messages of the hopes and dreams of the purchaser who then release them into the night sky by the power of fire; and Two: they represent the end of the Chinese New Year period and their release symbolizes the shedding of outdated ways and embracing the future.

I'm Tiffani’, an English teacher living in America. I spent almost 10 years in South Korea as a missionary English teacher and it was great. After that experience, I decided to continue helping students around the world learn how to speak English with confidence. My goal is to help 1 billion students, just like you, finally speak English with confidence.
