Welcome back to Down On The Farm, today on this channel we are going to talk about “ Best Cash Crops for Small Farms” On a given day in the life of a farmer, there are multiple aspects and areas that demand attention, including soil health, crops, market, labour, climate, farming methods and technologies being used. Each factor plays a role in ensuring success and profitability in a farm business. However, when it comes to small scale producers, it is of paramount importance to mindfully identify and choose crops that are capable of bringing relatively more profit even with minimal capital investment and care. These crops are basically called cash crops as they ensure maximum profit and return even on a small farm and are mainly grown for revenue and export rather than sustenance.

Small farmers can ensure the highest price for their produce by selling it directly to customers or making value-added products out of it. However, taking care of all marketing and sales on your own also means more hard work and time. After a certain scale, it becomes difficult to sell all your harvests for maximum price in the time that is available to you alongside production. As your farm expands, you may need to consider selling, at least some parts of your produce, to wholesalers for a lower price to get your produce selling faster and with ease.Check this video out and stay updated!

Coconut Farming.
The coconut palm is referred to as Kalpavriksha, the tree of heaven, as each and every part of the palm is useful to mankind in one way or other. It provides food, drink, fuel, and timber. With good farm management practices farmers can achieve maximum yield and decent profit as well. Coconut is cultivated in more than 93 countries of the world and Indonesia, Philippines, and India are the major producing countries in the world.

Fish Farming.
Fish is one of the favorite items on the food menu of almost 60% of Indians. So market demand is always high for fish items. If we consider the global demand also, the total requirement becomes very high. The main source of fish is the sea. but the global fish harvest from the sea is decreasing rapidly.
The only way we can ensure the availability of fish to meet increasing demand is through fish farms. Inland freshwater fish plays a major role here. With a good business plan and decision, we can convert this opportunity into a successful small-scale farm.

Integrated Coconut & Fish Farming.

Integrated Farming is a whole farm management system that aims to deliver more sustainable agriculture. Integrated Farming combines modern tools and technologies with traditional practices according to a given site and situation, often employing many cultivation techniques in a small growing area.
Coconut requires plenty of water. So canal irrigation system in coconut farming was getting popular. Already so many farmers adopted this technology. If farmers integrate fish farming with coconut farming, then they can get a good profit. In canals, they can grow fish very easily.
At first canals and beds are made with the help of JCB. In the bed, you can plant coconut plants. In between those plants, you can plant pineapples as well. So, you can get much more profit. Then rear fish in the canal water.

Selection of Fish Breeds.
The selection of Fish breeds plays a major role in the sustainability of our business. The decision should be based on market demand, maintenance point of view, availability of the resource, effective utilization of resources, etc. Carp items such as Catla, Rohu, Grass carp, Common carp, etc are suitable for Indian ponds. Other breeds such as Tilapia, Catfish, etcetera are also cultivated in Indian Ponds. Polyculture, growing two or more fish breeds in the same pond is the suitable strategy for the optimum utilization of resources. You can get quality baby fish from the nearest fish farmer or from the fisheries department.

Bottom line.
This is how you can integrate fish farming with coconut farming. Grow some other crops in between coconut plants. So that you can produce more food from a small area, at the same time you can earn more profit from your existing land.

For centuries, Ukraine has been known as “the breadbasket of Europe.” This title is entirely accurate, given that Ukraine is home to around a quarter of the world’s super-fertile “chernozem” or “black soil.”

However, Ukrainians have not been able to fully capitalize on these agricultural riches during the thirty years since the country gained independence. Instead, independent Ukraine became one of only six nations globally without an agricultural land market, joining the likes of North Korea and Venezuela. Thankfully, the situation is now being transformed and Ukraine is gearing up to take its rightful place as an agricultural superpower. The untapped potential of Ukraine’s agricultural sector is staggering. The country boasts around 42 million hectares of agricultural land. At present, 32 million hectares are cultivated annually, representing an area larger than Italy. Given the size and fertility of the country’s farmland, together with the vast scope for increased harvests and greater efficiency through ongoing modernization, it is no exaggeration to state that Ukraine can feed the world. Great doctor, better farmer! It would take a family tragedy to launch this young doctor’s impressive farming career. Following his elder brother Rotham’s tragic passing in a car accident, Obakeng Mfikwe found himself increasingly having to take off time from his medical practice in Fourways in Johannesburg to help his ageing dad with the family’s communal cattle farming at Beestekraal, close to Jericho in North West. And the more he farmed, the more he found himself enjoying it. When he finally took the plunge and bought his first few cows, he knew he was well and truly hooked. So he closed his medical practice and started farming full-time, and within just a few years, achieved some great successes. His Simmentaler and Simbra cattle studs have already won several awards, and he also plants more than a 1000 ha of maize, sunflower and fodder crops on several farms in the North West and Magaliesberg.

Today we are with Kedex in Hof Bergmann and we are breeding animals. First, we put pregnant pig into the breeding shed with red lights. Then we went into the store with John Deer Gator to pick up a small animal transport trailer and BULL semen at the animal dealer. We hired VET that's gone make cow pregnant. After that is done we feed and bedded animals. Also, we put some eggs into the incubator and transported eggs and cheese into cold storage.

In this video we put our red Dexter Bull in with the cows for breeding season! Mr. President is a ADCA registered Red Dexter Bull. He is a2/a2 and Homozygous polled. We have chosen to breed for a2/a2 and polled genetics in our Dexter herd.

Being from East Africa and working to establish a goat farm with local east African goats can seem a challenge owing to the fact that goats from this region are small and have a very low growth rate. the introduction of exotic goat breeds like Boers, Savanas, brown Kalahari among others the trade seemed to be getting better but the challenge is that acquiring those breeds costs an arm and a leg. However, with cross breeding these problems can be mitigated and this video is here to show you how this can be done.

CROSS BREEDING

Crossbreeding, sometimes called "designer crossbreeding"

- Mating of two animals from different genetic genotypes.
- it can be a local goat against a boer or savanna or kalahari.
- Usually you want to improve the meat in your goats
- End up achieving a pure goat after 6 times breeding

Crossbreeding is the mating of males and females of different breeds or breed types. Purebreeding is the mating of individuals of the same breed or type. Crossbreeding is the recommended breeding strategy for commercial meat sheep and meat goat production.

LINE BREEDING
- Mating of related animals but of less close
relationship.

- Line breeding : Mating animals that are more distantly related which can be traced back to one common ancestor.
-
- Line breeding can accomplish several goals:  1)  produce a more consistent and uniform offspring;  2) identify breeding populations that have no genetic flaws, or identify existing flaws so they can be eliminated;  3)  accentuate and sustain more consistent excellence; 4)  develop linebred progeny that will provide a "genetic kick" or hybrid vigor when they are outcrossed with non relatives.

INBREEDING
- Mating of offspring and parents or siblings
Can cause bad genetic traits to become more
apparent.
- Inbreeding refers to the mating of close relatives in species that are normally outbreeding. Matings between father and daughter, brother and sister, or first cousins are examples of inbreeding

- Examples of defects seen with inbreeding include:
* Reduced fertility.
* Reduced birth rate.
* Higher infant and child mortality.
* Smaller adult size.
* Reduced immune function.
* Increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
* Increased facial asymmetry.
* Increased risk of genetic disorders.

In this video we put our Dexter bull (Mr. President) in with our “mini” dexter heifer (Ladybug). Ladybug is an 18 month old chondro carrier dexter heifer. She is approximately 30 inches at the hip and would be classified as a mini cow when compared to other cattle breeds. We talk about chondrodysplasia, why we are breeding her to Mr. President who is a non chondro carrier, the importance of conformation, and breeding qualities to look for in your breeding stock.

In this lecture, I have tried to provide a brief introduction to animal breeding. Animal Breeding deals with the selective crossing of domestic animals to produce offspring with desirable qualities/characteristics. I have also provided the definitions of basic terms used in animal breeding. These terms are:

Economically Important Traits
Any trait having a monitory value
Trait
A trait is "a distinguishing phenotypic characteristic, typically belonging to an individual“
Phenotype
A phenotype is what you observe or measure on the animal for a certain trait
Selection
Preferential use of animals for breeding
The process that determines which individuals become parents to the next generation
Natural Selection
The selection that occurs in nature independent of deliberate human control
Artificial Selection
The selection that is under human control
Gamete
Sex cells
Culling
Removal of undesired animals from the herd
Artificial Insemination
A reproductive technology in which semen is collected from males, then used in fresh or frozen form to breed females
Breeding Value
Actual genetic potential of an animal for a specific trait
Estimated Breeding Value
Estimated genetic potential of an animal for a certain trait
Phenotypic selection
Selection based solely on an individual's own phenotype
Heritability
The proportion of the total phenotypic variation in a population that is due to genetic variation among individuals
Genetic correlation
The measure of strength of relationship b/w breeding values of two traits
Phenotypic Correlation
The measure of strength of relationship b/w performance of two traits
Repeatability
A measure of the strength of the relationship between repeated records for a trait in a population
Fertility
The ability of a female to conceive
The ability of a male to impregnate
Sire
A general term used for male parent
Dam
A general term used for female parent
Pedigree Data
Information on the genotypes or performance of an animal’s ancestors
Progeny data
Information on the genotypes or performance of animal’s offspring
Collateral relatives
Relatives that are neither direct ancestors nor direct descendants of an individual, e.g., siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews

A list of all the useful information on a sire
Mating
The process that determines which selected males are bred to which selected females

Cross Breeding
