Los Angeles County has been devastated by two deadly wildfires that have destroyed more than 12,000 structures.

The Palisades and Eaton fires both erupted on Jan. 7, fueled by severe drought conditions and strong Santa Ana winds.

First responders increased containment on multiple fires burning in Los Angeles County on Saturday, making progress after more than a week’s worth of severe red flag weather created some of the worst wildfires in the region’s history.

As Los Angeles faces its most destructive wildfires in history, tens of thousands of buildings have been destroyed, and hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes.

The largest blaze, in the Pacific Palisades area, has burned more than 23,000 acres, making it the city’s worst fire on record.

The fires have killed at least 27 people and swept through residential communities, destroying more than 12,300 structures and forcing thousands of people to evacuate. Drone video shot on Wednesday (January 15) showed the extent of the damage from the Palisades wildfire in Malibu, California.

Along a stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway, known as one of the most scenic drives in the U.S., buildings lay in ruins. In the nearby hills, the skeletons of buildings stood next to buildings left untouched as ferocious flames tore through the neighborhood.

The main two giant Los Angeles wildfires -- the Palisades fire and the Eaton fire -- have terrified the city for eight days, testing the resolve of a city upended by the worst disaster in its history.

Drone footage released on Sunday, January 19, captures the devastating aftermath of the Eaton Fire in Altadena, California, part of the larger California wildfire crisis in 2025. The footage reveals widespread destruction, with ruins, rubble, and debris scattered across residential areas.

The wildfires, which ignited on January 7, have claimed at least 27 lives and destroyed over 10,000 structures, devastating communities like Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Fuelled by dry conditions and fierce Santa Ana winds, the fires spread rapidly, forcing mass evacuations.

As of January 16, Los Angeles officials have urged evacuees to remain away from their homes for at least another week. Economic losses from the fires are estimated between $20 billion and $45 billion, leaving displaced families facing rising rents and uncertain insurance outcomes.
