Motor oil, or engine oil, helps lubricate the moving parts in your car, truck, or SUV’s engine, which improves the lifespan and performance of the engine, and can also affect gas mileage and engine temperature. Regular oil changes are a scheduled maintenance task that replaces the dirty, contaminated oil in your vehicle with fresh, contaminant-free oil to help keep your engine performing its best for longer, and includes the replacement of the filter which may have collected debris circulated through the oil. Engine oil traps and suspends harmful contaminants like metal particles, ash, soot, and water from damaging your engine  and reduces friction and wear. Maintaining a schedule of regular oil changes can prevent engine wear and more expensive damages from occurring due to a lack of lubrication. If your vehicle has conventional oil, it’s recommended that the oil is changed every 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first; for vehicles with synthetic oil, they should be serviced every 6 months or 5,000 miles in many cases. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will detail the specific maintenance intervals and oil type and weight for your car, truck, or SUV as recommended by the manufacturer. Performing an oil change yourself is an easy task that will give you peace of mind and keep your engine running better for longer.

Engine oil lubricates the engine’s moving components to reduce internal friction, resulting in less drag, better engine performance, increased fuel economy, and a longer life for your engine. Changing your vehicle’s oil is a routine maintenance task that needs to be performed regularly, and your owner’s manual will detail the service requirements and oil type best suited for your engine’s needs. Help reduce the cost of an oil change by doing it yourself with the right parts, tools, and accessories. Find the best motor oil for your car, truck, or SUV at O’Reilly Auto Parts, including synthetic, conventional, and high-mileage oil, and pick up an oil filter, oil drip pan, and more to help make your repair even easier.

• Find a flat, stable surface where you can work, like a driveway or garage.
• Make sure the vehicle has had at least 15-20 minutes to cool.
• Set the parking brake.
• Chock your rear wheels.
• Use a jack and jack stands (or ramps) to raise the front of the vehicle.
• Open the hood and locate the oil fill cap.
• Remove that cap and set it aside.
• Under the car, locate the oil drain plug.
• Set a drain pan beneath the plug and remove plug completely. Set it someplace safe.
• It’s a good idea to replace your drain plug gasket. Also, visually inspect the drain plug itself to make sure it’s still in good shape. If not, replace it as well.
• Once the draining oil has slowed to a drip, clean and replace the drain plug. Tighten the plug to manufacturer’s specifications.
• Next, you’re going to locate the oil filter and slide your drain pan underneath it. Most conventional spin-on filters are easily accessed from under the vehicle, but some use a remote mount and are accessed in the engine compartment. With a cartridge-type filter like this one, you’ll remove the cover and take out the filter itself. Spin-on filters like this one are removed as a unit using a filter wrench.

With direct injection, a fuel injector sits inside the combustion chamber. It injects fuel directly into the chamber, at exactly the right time, with the valves closed, hence the name. Injection directly into the chamber.

Fuel is thus completely separate from the inlet air system.

In the older, port-style fuel injection system, a far less hi-tech injector was located in the inlet port, right on top of the inlet valve. (This tended to wash the valve - by spraying the valve more or less continuously with fuel, which is a powerful solvent. But it was a fairly wasteful and imprecise way of delivering fuel.)

So, with direct injection, only air goes into the inlet system. Crankcase vapours are also sucked in (via the PCV system - for ‘positive crankcase ventilation’), and some exhaust gas is recirculated (that’s called ‘EGR’ - exhaust gas recirculation).

Although they are coarsely filtered, crankcase vapours tend to be a bit oily, and recirculated exhaust gas can be a bit hot (even though it’s water-cooled). So, if you mix the oily vapours and the hot EGR, you can burn the oily vapours to carbon and give the inlet manifold and ports the equivalent of atherosclerosis.

This happens a lot if the EGR or PCV systems are defective or badly designed - so premature profound carbonisation is often symptomatic of a problem with PCV or EGR.

If you don’t drive on the open road much (for about an hour a fortnight, ballpark) your engine oil gets pretty contaminated. This is due to the hi-tech miracle of blow-by.

The PCV vapours get a bit filthier than usual when the oil is contaminated, and this can lead to the formation of significant oily, sooty deposits in the inlet tract, which is a good idea to clean up before it gets serious and impacts engine performance. It’s a problem mainly for engines that do only short trips and lots of cold starts.

The EGR tends to bake it on - but, frankly, this tends to be more profound on a diesel, which does a lot more volume of EGR as a proportion of total operational flow.

Going for a long drive every few months is insufficient to purify the oil. The open-road driving has to be reasonably regular.

To be clear - the highway driving doesn’t clean up any contamination already in the inlet plumbing. Once it’s there, it’s there. If it’s there and serious enough, you need to get it cleaned away mechanically - if the degree of contamination is likely to affect engine operation.

The purpose of the highway driving is: it purifies the engine oil and thus prevents the deposits from forming. That highway-style lean burning and sustained full operating temperature evaporates off all the water and the volatile components of unburned fuel, which exit via the PCV.

If you’re not going to do regular highway driving, get your oil changed more often - say twice a year - but still try to get out on the highway as often as you can. 30-60 minutes routinely is a good target.

In traditional port fuel injection or PFI engines, the gasoline washes over valves, cleaning them in the process. In GDI engines, gasoline is injected directly into the cylinder so it never comes in contact with the intake valves. Without that constant cleaning action, harmful carbon deposits build up on the valves. The result is reduced performance and loss of power. Chunks of carbon can even break off and cause damage to engines and other components. Some methods of removing the carbons involve costly labor intensive processes. Removing carbon build up from your direct injection gasoline engine is easier than you might think! I'd always heard that you have to soda or walnut shell blast the valves after removing the intake from the engine, then go through a painstaking cleanup to remove the abrasive. I was Googling methods to remove carbon build up again this morning and came across this CRC product that works way better than I ever expected. Since we swapped the engine on the $1,500 Hyundai Veloster it's been great but there is a small shudder at idle that I couldn't fix even after replacing the plugs and swapping coils, this cleared it right up. Now it's time to do my Volt!

Intake valve cleaning cost a lot if you take your car to the dealership, they have to disassemble the engine or if they have sand blaster to clean them, but either ways, the have to remove intake manifold to get access to the intake valves for direct and indirect engines, so it will take time and cost, in todays video i will show you how to clean it without removing anything
Even this is indirect injection engine, but still too much carbon buildup on the intake valve building up because, i drive the car aggressively sometime and the oil vapor passing from PCV valve to intake throttle
