Ashoka University is a pioneer in its focus on providing a liberal education at par with the best in the world. The aim at Ashoka is to help students become well-rounded individuals who can think critically about issues from multiple perspectives, communicate effectively and become leaders with a commitment to public service. An Ashoka education carries a strong emphasis on foundational knowledge, thorough academic research based on rigorous pedagogy, and hands-on experience with real-world challenges. The 1400 students on campus, drawn from over 28 states and 98 cities in India as well as 17 other countries, receive a world-class interdisciplinary education through undergraduate and post-graduate programmes led by internationally renowned faculty.
The Harvard Initiative for Learning and Teaching (HILT) welcomed Susan R. Singer, Division Director in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Laurence McKinley Gould Professor in the Biology and Cognitive Science Departments at Carleton, on Friday, May 1, 2015 for a conversation with Harvard STEM faculty about improving undergraduate science education. The talk was part of HILT’s Scholar to Practitioner Speaker Series.
For more information about HILT, please visit http://hilt.harvard.edu/.
Bright Antilles' founder Dr. Danielle Elliot joined us to discuss the programme that her company that develops innovative educational programming has created to help students "Crack the Comprehension Code."
Dr. Elliott also spoke to the importance of comprehension outside of the classroom, how parents, grandparents and guardians can engage with the course for their charges, as well as what she hopes this course will accomplish.
In this episode, my guest is Chris Voss, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent who was the lead negotiator in many high-risk, high-consequence cases. Chris has taught negotiation courses at Harvard and Georgetown Universities and is the author of the book “Never Split the Difference.” We discuss how to navigate difficult conversations of all kinds, including in business, romance and romantic breakups, job firings and tense conversations with family and friends. Chris explains how to navigate online, in person and in written negotiations, the red flags to watch out for and how to read body and voice cues in face-to-face and phone conversations. He explains how to use empathy, certain key questions, proactive listening, emotional processing and more to ensure you reach the best possible outcome in any hard conversation. This episode ought to be of interest to anyone looking to improve their interpersonal abilities and communication skills and for those who want to be able to keep a level head in heated discussions.

Communication is a crucial part of everyone's life, yet millions of Americans suffer from communication disorders. In fact, stuttering affects about 1 percent of the U. S. population. Dr. Dennis Drayna, of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, explains how genes affect the ability to communicate and discusses his work with stuttering and disorders of pitch recognition, also known as 'tone deafness.'
Antonio Damasio: The Brain - Creativity, Imagination, and Innovation / Ross Institute Summer Academy
Antonio Damasio is University Professor and David Dornsife Professor of Neuroscience and Director of the Brain and Creativity Institute at the University of Southern California. He is also an adjunct professor at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California.
Damasio has made seminal contributions to the understanding of how the brain processes memory, language, emotions, and decisions and has described his discoveries in books (Self Comes to Mind, Descartes' Error, The Feeling of What Happens, and Looking for Spinoza) translated into over 30 languages and taught in universities
worldwide.
Damasio's current work is focused on illuminating the brain basis of social behaviors (ranging from moral judgments and communication to economic decisions), and understanding mechanisms of creativity in art, science, and technology.

Watch video of Bruce McCandliss, the Patricia and Rodes Hart Chair of Psychology and Human Development, speaking at the Commencement 2011 Faculty Seminars.
McCandliss carries out research that seeks to connect our understanding about changes in children's brain structure and function to specific aspects of education. This work asks questions such as how educational learning experiences reshape the brain networks that support a child's basic cognitive skills such as paying attention, reading and mathematics. He is well known for his basic laboratory-based research on the brain mechanisms of attention and studies of how specific learning experiences can change brain activity patterns related to reading skills, yet also for carrying out educational research in school-based studies to investigate the impact of these ideas in "real-world" educational interventions. His research with children and adults include several ways of looking at brain function and structure, including fMRI, ERP and DTI studies of the brain mechanisms that help explain individual differences in basic cognitive skills, including those with special needs.
Dr. McCandliss has published over 50 scientific papers across the fields of neuroscience, psychology, education, and developmental disabilities. He has received several awards including induction in Phi Beta Kappa, the John Merck Scholars Award in the Biology of Developmental Disabilities in Children, and a commendation from the President of the United States (PECASE-award) for outstanding contributions to science. He received his PhD from the University of Oregon in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience before going on for advanced post-doctoral training in neuroimaging at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. In 1999 he became a founding faculty member of the Sackler Institute for Developmental Psychobiology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Currently, Dr. McCandliss is a full Professor at Vanderbilt University, where he holds the Patricia and Rodes Hart Chair of Psychology and Human Development and serves as the director of the Educational Neuroscience Lab, and serves on the steering committee for the Vanderbilt Educational Neuroscience Initiative.
This course will utilize case examples that explore how to overcome common challenges to working on interprofessional teams, hindrances to effective teams, and why high-functioning teams are critical to successful outcomes, as well as provide practical strategies to improve auditory access to classroom learning for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

I recently passed the IAAP's (International Association of Accessibility Professional) CPACC (Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies) certification.
I walk through key resources and the most important information you need to know in order to pass this certification exam. A lot of this information is already covered in the resources provided by the IAAP, but I figured that according to the principles of Universal Design for Learning that I might as well produce this in another format to help those who are better auditory and visual learners.
I apologize in advance for any errors in the material and well as in the captions; I'm still learning and would appreciate any feedback and advice if you come across anything that doesn't seem accurate. In this video, we will explore Bottom-up and Top-down processing.
Generally speaking, there are two approaches to understanding the process of perception. These are the top-down processing and the bottom-up processing.
Top-down processing is defined as the development of pattern recognition through the use of contextual information.
Bottom-up processing is an explanation for the perception that involves starting with an incoming stimulus and working upwards until a representation of the object is formed in our minds.

Since retiring he has authored 13 books dealing with human behaviour and lectures widely on the importance and practical use of nonverbal communication.
His book, Louder Than Words, was lauded by The Wall Street Journal as “One of the six best business books to read for your career” and What Every BODY is Saying, translated into 28 languages, remains after eleven years, the #1 selling body-language book in the world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
Friend or foe? In a fraction of a second, our brain forms an impression of a person based on their facial expressions and voice. And artificial intelligence is getting better and better at interpreting human emotions.
Faces and voices are the first impressions we get of people we don’t know. In less than half a second, we decide whether we like or trust a person, and how intelligent we think they are. That’s thanks to the astonishing processing power of our brains. We learn to read facial expressions as babies, and as we grow older we continue to interpret emotions according to facial expressions. The voice also plays a crucial role: speed, syntax, tone, and phonetics all provide information about what a person is feeling.
But we are not the only ones who can decipher human emotions. Artificial intelligence technology is also learning to read faces and voices. A photo or a spoken sentence is usually enough to get information about identity, health, emotions and even personality. And the internet has become a vast and ever-growing database of faces and voices. Based on the sound of a voice, artificial intelligence can now detect whether a person suffers from Parkinson's, depression or even Covid-19. In this documentary, international experts offer insight into the latest science, illuminating how our brains work -- and the potential of artificial intelligence.
