Museum of Brisbane Deputy Director Christopher Salter talks about the exhibition that will take visitors behind the scenes to gain a glimpse into Hollywood of the 1920s to 1960s. Featuring a collection of costumes, props and ephemera connected to the cinema’s most iconic stars, studios and designers. This extraordinary exhibition is drawn from a sole private collection owned by Brisbane resident Nicholas Inglis who has been avidly acquiring motion picture costumes and memorabilia for close to two decades.
Costumes from the Golden Age of Hollywood will be shown exclusively in Brisbane, with all of the costumes exhibited in Australia for the very first time.

Alright, let's actually talk about it - how accurate (or inaccurate) are the costumes in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFayden? Are they actually...dare I say it...good...or smoking hot garbage?
It's common for historical costumers and dress historians to be overly critical and judgmental towards movie costumes, I mean, after all, we spend years and years studying different eras, historical construction techniques, and even sewing our own historical costumes. But a costume designer's job isn't always to be historically accurate, but to help tell a story through their costume designs.
Additionally, the pursuit of "historical accuracy" is a bit of a weird one, because our understanding and knowledge of historic dress change constantly. New research is being published and shared regularly, old myths and ideas debunked, and sources becoming easier to find.
The 2005 Pride and Prejudice has had a bit of popularity spike right now, thanks in part to Youtube and Tumblr (holy memes, batman) and it got me to thinking about the costumes. I was quick to dismiss them when the movie first came out, but now, looking back on the film, and rewatching it several times since March (mmm escapism...) I've developed a slightly different opinion. It's not that the costumes are perfect, they're definitely flawed, but that doesn't mean a lot of research into 18th century and regency clothing wasn't done, in fact, when watching the movie, it's clear that Jacquline Durran, the costume designer, did a lot of research into 18th century and Regency era women's fashion and dress.
So, with that in mind, I wanted to sit down create a deep dive video essay on the women's costumes from this version of Pride and Prejudice. Let's sit back, relax a bit, discuss, and fact check the costumes from Pride and Prejudice - including *that* brown dress that everyone on the internet is obsessed with.

The X-Men costumes have historically had one of the worst reputations in the entire comic book movie canon. But is that really fair?
Sure, there’s been an awful lot of black leather, and black armour, but there’s also been way more creative and comic accurate costumes in the franchise than people give them credit for. There’s also something to be said for comic book accuracy in general. Is a costume bad just because it doesn’t resemble anything that came before? Doesn’t the tone, narrative and context to the moviemaking alter how these costumes should be considered?
And then on top of that there’s the Deadpool outfit. Pure unfiltered perfection.
I’m going to look through all of the assorted looks from both the X-Men and their villains. Where were they treated unfairly? Where were they treated more than fairly? Which costumes came close but missed the mark? Overall, are the X-Men costumes really that bad?

The Ross family prepare for some Halloween trick-or-treating by dressing up as superheroes!
What do small town girls do when they have big dreams? 🤷Move to New York of course! Rebelling against her strict military father, Jessie arrives in the big city to pursue her dreams of performing. 🗽
However, what she wasn’t expecting was that she’d start working as a nanny for a wealthy New York family. But thanks to a serendipitous encounter, Jessie ends up moving into the Ross family’s fancy apartment to look after Emma, Luke, Ravi and Zuri. 💜💙💚💛
With their movie director dad, Morgan, and supermodel turned business mogul mom, Christina, often out of town, the responsibility falls on Jessie to make sure the kids stay on the straight and narrow.
It’s not always the easiest job, but Jessie loves her charges a lot and will do anything to make sure their happy. And with the help of the family butler Bertram and Tony, the building’s doorman, she just about manages to keep it together! 🤣
Jessie (Debby Ryan) may come from a small town, but she has big dreams. 💭She is hard-working and ambitious and doesn’t give up without a fight. She is kind and caring, but quickly learns that looking after four children means that she has to be strict sometimes. However, she is always there for the Ross children if they need her. ❤️
Emma (Peyton List) is bubbly, happy and sometimes a little ditsy. Although, being a teenager, she can also be a bit cynical at times. She loves fashion and is boy crazy. 😍
Luke (Cameron Boyce) was adopted as a young child and likes to think of himself as a bit of a charmer. He likes playing pranks on his family and is quite mischievous. He is laid-back and likes playing video games and dancing. 🕺
Ravi (Karan Brar) is adopted from India and loves spending time with his pet lizard Mr Kipling. 🦎He is very smart and enjoys playing video games. He loves his new family, even when they play pranks on him.
Zuri (Skai Jackson) is cute and funny. She is also adopted and although she is the youngest of the family, she likes to think she’s the boss. Zuri is very creative and likes playing with her stuffed animals and imaginary friends. 🐻
Christina (Christina Moore) is the mom of the Ross family and is a former supermodel, turned businesswoman. She is always well-dressed and is super busy. She loves her children more than anything and often worries about them. 💕
Morgan (Charles Esten) is the dad of the Ross family and a famous movie director. 🤩He is kind of a big kid himself and likes joining in with the children’s games and spoiling them.
Bertram (Kevin Chamberlin) is the family butler. ✨He can be quite grumpy at times, especially when the children are running around causing chaos. Although he complains about it, he often ends up trying to help Jessie. He loves opera music.
Tony (Chris Galya) is the building’s doorman. He has a cheesy sense of humour and makes terrible jokes! He likes Jessie, but often ends up making a bit of a fool of himself in front of her. 🙈However, he’s always there to help her when she needs it.

"They're familiar characters in the debate over controversial Halloween costumes: suicide bombers, geishas, gangsta rappers, rednecks and sexy nurses.
Such costumes regularly draw allegations of racism, sexism or insensitivity. But where do fully-clothed folk legends fit in?
American Apparel featured characters on both ends of the spectrum this month in its annual do-it-yourself Halloween costume guide. Below a collection of pin-up girl costumes -- including a model donning a breast-baring serape -- was "La Llorona," the ghostly weeping woman who kidnaps wandering children, according to folklore in parts of Latin America.
True, she was wearing a lace bustier under a shawl, but the layers upon layers make her appear more like the haunted bag lady than a sexy spirit."*
