A Chinese-owned supermarket in Nigeria's capital Abuja has been shut by the authorities over allegations that it denied entry to African shoppers. The supermarket in Abuja allegedly only permitted people of “Chinese descent” to enter its premises. The supermarket is located in a building that is run by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. The closure of the supermarket came after massive outrage among Nigerians after some locals shared experiences of being denied entry into the store for not being Chinese. The Chinese store has now been closed until the owner testifies to the Nigerian consumer watchdog. China has been notorious for its racism against Africans, with reports suggesting that racism against Africans on Chinese social media was at an all-time high.

Nigerian artist Fola David is seeking the Guinness record for the largest drawing by an individual after spending six days on his piece in a stadium in, the commercial capital Lagos.
David, also a medical doctor, said his 1,050 square-metre "Unity in Diversity" artwork, an image of two giant hands holding Nigeria's map, was meant to showcase the country's rich cultural heritage.
"Most people want to belong to a particular place and then they create problems and fight against other cultures and all that, instead of learning about them, embracing them, and loving each one of them," David said.
The project was a long-held dream for David, who first applied to attempt the record in 2015 but could not embark on it. After applying multiple times and receiving approval from Guinness World Records, he finally brought his vision to life.
Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, has a vibrant arts and entertainment industry. However, the country's rich cultural tapestry has also been a source of division, as Nigeria is home to more than 250 ethnic groups, each with its own languages and traditions.
Political struggles often stem from tribalism, with disputes over resources, power, and representation causing tension between these ethnic groups. David's artwork is a call for unity amidst these societal challenges, a reminder that embracing diversity, rather than division, can lead to the nation's progress and development.
"Our diversity should be seen as something that unites us, as something that strengthens us rather than something that should create that divide between us," David explained.
Nigeria's history with the Guinness World Records is marked by individuals significant achievements such as Kaffy, a Nigerian dancer and choreographer, who had set a record for the longest dance marathon by an individual. Hilda Baci, a renowned chef, previously held the record for the longest cooking hours by an individual. Baci's 'cook-a-thon' accomplishment had put Nigeria on the global map and paved the way for other Nigerians to dream bigger.
Fola David's artwork, if certified, will not only add to Nigeria's growing list of Guinness World Records, but also send a powerful message about unity in diversity, resonating with the country's multicultural essence.
The record set in 2021 by Indian artist Ravi Soni who drew a 629.98 square-metre piece is what David is attempting to break. - Report from Reuters

President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians to shelve a planned ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest slated for next month.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris, who briefed selected State House correspondents after a meeting with the President on Tuesday, said Tinubu urged the organisers of the protest to shelve the plan and await the President’s response to their complaints.

“The issue of the planned protest, Mr President does not see any need for that. He’s asked them to shelve that plan. He’s asked them to await the government’s response to all their pleas,” the minister said.

The protest against economic hardship, which is gaining traction on social media, has been scheduled to be held across all states of the Federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in August.

Prices of food and basic commodities have gone through the roof in the last months, as Nigerians battle one of the country’s worst inflation and economic crisis sparked by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows.

Bangladeshi authorities cut several mobile internet services on Thursday for "security" reasons following student protests. "Mobile internet has been temporarily suspended due to various rumors and the unstable situation created... on social media," Zunaid Ahmed Palak, the junior information technology minister, told reporters. Services would be restored once the situation returned to normal, Palak added. Shops and offices were open in Dhaka, the capital, but there were fewer buses on the streets. The government has ordered schools and universities to close indefinitely amid the protests.

Why are students protesting in Bangladesh?
Students have been demanding the abolition of a quota of 30% reserved for the families of those who fought in the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan. Protesters argue that the reservations have led to widespread unemployment in the South Asian country. Bangladesh has nearly 32 million young people who are out of work or education among a population of 170 million. At least six people have been killed and hundreds injured in the protests in recent days. On Thursday, protests continued nationwide, with police firing tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse demonstrators.

Authorities had shut all public and private universities indefinitely from Wednesday and sent riot police and the Border Guard paramilitary force to university campuses to keep order. In a speech on Wednesday, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promised her government would set up a judicial panel to investigate the deaths after police fired bullets and tear gas to scatter protesters. Hasina urged the students to remain patient until the Supreme Court hears the government's appeal against a High Court decision on August 7, which ordered the reinstatement of the 30% quota.

Barack Obama has made it clear he wants to see an “open contest” for the Democrat nominee position following President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the race, according to The Australian’s chief international correspondent Cameron Stewart.

President Biden endorsed Kamala Harris to replace him as the Democrat nominee but Mr Obama made no mention of the Vice President in his statement.

“There’s a lot of people who want the party just to coalesce around Harris. They think that’s less divisive, they think it’s the only way to go forward without more divisions within the party,” Mr Stewart told Sky News Australia.

“But then you have Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi who want an open contest.”

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Sunday that he will not be seeking a second presidential term, but will continue to serve out his current term as president. His announcement comes in the wake of a disastrous debate with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump last month, which threw the Democratic party into chaos just months before the U.S. election. A 15-year-old boy has been shot dead following an incident in west London.

Police said they were called to reports of a shooting in a park in Ladbroke Grove at around 7.20pm on Sunday.

Violent disorder has broken out in a suburb of Leeds following an incident at a property.

A group of people were filmed flipping over a police car during the unrest and a fire was seen being lit.

Police said no injuries had been reported.

West Yorkshire Police said: "At 5pm today (Thursday), police were called to an ongoing incident at an address in Luxor Street, Harehills.

"Officers attended and found an ongoing disturbance which involved some agency workers and some children.

"More people started to attend the location and a decision was made to remove the agency workers and the children to a safe place.

"A crowd started to gather and more officers were requested to attend the area, where some pockets of disorder were occurring."
