A lunge can refer to any position of the human body where one leg is positioned forward with knee bent and foot flat on the ground while the other leg is positioned behind. It is used by athletes in cross-training for sports, by weight-trainers as a fitness exercise, and by yogis as part of an asana regimen.

Improve this exercise by organizing your body and improving the movement itself, improve the technique and flow, rather than merely working on your strength and power.

Are You Lunging WRONG? 3 Tips To FIX Your Lunge

The lunge, in all its many forms, is so often blamed for knee pain.

But moves are only as good as their implementation. And we need to understand there is a difference between going through the motions and mimicking proper form and actually getting the correct muscles working.

Too often we end up demonizing this amazing move instead of learning to properly control it and load muscles correctly.

And that overload is what leads to the pain. Not engaging the correct muscles to power the movement can prevent us from seeing the full benefit of all the amazing lunge variations out there.

We don’t take time to see all of the tweaks to form we can make to work around previous injuries, adjust to our specific builds and mobility restrictions not to mention even us variations based on our specific needs and goals.

That’s why I want to share 3 key form cues I use to help client’s get more out of this amazing move while avoiding those common mistakes we often make that lead to aches and pains.

Because we have to remember that form isn’t as binary as we make it out to be. There are so many slight adjustments we can make to get more out of exercises so they fit our needs and goals!

For this leg workout you will need a pair of dumbbells (I am using 12.5kg each hand), a sturdy chair/bench, mat and optional is yoga block / book!

The exercises are all performed for 40 seconds each! Following each exercise below, we then go into step ups: single leg step ups switching sides half way at 20 seconds.

With the step ups, try to not use momentum from body to lift, more try to use quads to extend up. Depending on the weight you have, and confidence, you may prefer to use 2 x dumbbells for step ups.

If you having to ‘jump’ slightly to raise up, then perform with 1 x dumbbell or no dumbbell. I performed with one dumbbell so I could reduce any momentum needed also it makes the core work that bit more!

Another important note regarding the step ups is to try to make it as difficult as you can! Lifting off with the toes rather than whole foot on the floor is more difficult! Also, it is difficult with dumbbells, but try to slow down the lowering part as much as possible and land gently!

Please ensure you practise stepping up prior to gauge whether to use no/1/2 dumbbells! And of course spend at least 5 minutes warming up!

Again like with squats, what you are looking for is knee tracking problems. Don’t let the knee roll in across the foot. It’s ok to have the knee coming forward over the toe as long as you have the ROM in the ankle and you can keep your front door heel down on the floor. The other angle issue you need to address is the shin / spine / back-thigh all being parallel forward. If your stance is too short you will load the back patello-femoral joint too much. If you can't correct your technique it maybe a weakness problem that you should go and see your Physio about - to get the right hip stability and external rotation strengthening exeicses on one leg to improve it.

With the current global situation many of you maybe starting to head back into the gym - if not already! If you have had some time off from exercise, especially load (like weights and plyometrics) then launching straight back into gym work, running, group exercise classes and boot camps needs to be done with a bit of awareness around your mechanics.

Usually people dont feel mechnical knee pain until a few weeks into a new routine with non-optimum knee movement. Too many weeks of exercises with a knee rolling in, and then with load can lead produce stress on the knee tissues and eventually pain and injury. This will definitely put a road block in your training - that you have so long yearned to get back into. Don't let this happen to you!

Hi. I'm Ruben Belliard from Warrior Fitness Boot Camp here in New York City, and today I'm going to show you how to do the side lunge. A side lunge is a great lower body exercise. It really works on the inside of your leg. So the first thing we want to do is step out to the right. We're going to step out to the right, but as you do that one of the key things you have to be aware of is don't let your toes point toward that direction.

You want to take a big step to whatever side you're going to go. Make sure your toes are facing or parallel to each other, your feet are parallel to each other. All right. Now we're going to slowly lunge down while you keep your opposite leg straight. Now the key that I tell people, hey, extend your arms out. That helps you keep your balance. You can go nice and low. If you don't, the tendency is to kind of just lean into it and bend your back, and not really get the full benefit of the side lunge. So you want to extend out. Go as low as you can go. Flexibility is going to dictate how low you can go. And then once you're done, explode right back to the start position up here. So again, as you step out, extend those arms out there. Keep that left leg straight. Go as low as you can go, hold it for a split second, and explode back to the side position, to the standing position. And that's how you do a side lunge.

Up for a challenge? 😁 Join me as we work through 10 variations of lunges in this leg workout, each performed for 100 reps each! Hamstrings, glutes and quads will be completely destroyed after so much endurance but such a good training session!!

If you haven’t done this sort of training before, it’s fun!

Aim to perform each movement as smoothly as possible with no jarring or jerking movements and perform full range motion that is comfortable for you.

Some will little little time such as pulses whilst others that bit longer!

You can also set a target of 500 reps as it will say on screen once you reach that point!

No equipment needed however, for this lunge workout I am using a yoga block and you can also use a thick book instead simply to elevate the front foot to make it that bit more challenging!

I haven’t completed a rep challenge in so long and LOVED this so much!

Simply follow along, stop when you need to! You can count also or let your mind wonder and follow my reps! If you need to pause for a moment at points, definitely do so!

The quads, hamstrings, glutes and adductors will all be working hard during these 20 minutes! We will get a lot of work completed within these 20 minutes but that doesn’t mean rushing… infact this workout is all about perfect form, depth and smoothness of the movement.

Each set will be a different variation of those lunges! Of course when we complete one side, we must then do the opposite side!

Quick, lots of variety and of course challenging!!!

Slow paced to allow for focus on technique and alignment!

Imagine those hamstrings and glute muscles lengthening as you lower. Ease into the depth of begin with and aim for as deep as you comfortably can from then on! Take your time and don’t worry about how many reps you manage… keep a note of how many you do manage per side though to do the same on the opposite!

The timer will be on throughout for 45 seconds of work, with 15 seconds rest!

Once we complete an exercise on one side, we then perform the opposite side for the next set!

All you will need for this leg workout is a pair of dumbbells! The timer I am using for your reference are 15kg each!

Here’s a quick lunge and squat combination using only a block/step/small box to provide some uneven positioning in the squat and front foot elevation in the lunges to allow for greater depth!

These exercises will provide a lot of work for the quads, hamstrings and glutes! Really try to focus on depth of your squats and lunges while keeping good form!

Simply perform each exercise for 50 seconds with 10 seconds to prepare for next exercise... all done in 10 minutes!

The exercises are as follows:

Foot elevated lunge
Foot elevated lunge
Uneven squat
Uneven squat
Foot elevated lunge
Foot elevated lunge
Uneven squat
Uneven squat
Alternating rear lunge
Squat burn out!!!

This workout can of course be performed without the block/step/small box!

Hello everyone!

10 minute lunge workout.

Lunges! Lunges! And more lunges! Why?

Because they are up there in my list of must do exercises for strong, defined and tight legs!

Lunges with heavy dumbbells, walking lunges, bodyweight, Bulgarians... so many variations and definitely credit these to changes I’ve seen in people’s lower body.

This is solely a lunge workout because I personally love how lunges help build muscle and definition in the legs and glutes, but aside from aesthetics they have so many benefits;

Lunges work the quads, hamstrings, glutes, and core!

They are a single leg movement so activation of stabiliser muscles lead to improved balance, stability and co-ordination.

Can help with any imbalances or misalignments you may have.
They can put less stress on spine so great option over squats if lower back issues. They also strengthen the core and back therefore helping decrease risk of injury in lower back in future.

The 10 exercises are performed for one minute then straight into the next exercise. This is follow along however just pause the movement when you need to!

The exercises are as follows:

Diagonal forward alternating lunge
Side to side
Reverse alternating
Lunge to rotational knee
Lunge to rotational knee
Forward alternating lunge w/ 2 pulses
Side lunge to curtsey
Side lunge to curtsey
Pulse lunges
Pulse lunges

The last 2 minutes is when the lactic acid really builds up and the burn rises! But push through it, you can do it!
