Although math skills are considered notoriously hard to change, Johns Hopkins University researchers improved preschoolers’ arithmetic performance simply by exercising their intuitive number sense with a quick computer game.

Hard.
Is math hard for kids?
Hard.
Easy!

Man:I t's easy? Why?
Uh. I don't know.

Computer female voice: Let's play a game!
Each of them will have some dots.
Children are playing this computerized dot game in which they see two collections of dots.
Now which ones more?
The dots are flashed too quickly to count so they just have to use that intuitive gut number sense that we know we share with other animal species and that even newborn infants have.
Blue!
Computer:That's right!
All kids have to do is tell us whether there are more blue dots or more yellow dots.
Yellow!
Computer:You did it!
Awesome job!
1, 2, 3, 4
After the dot game we gave children a portion of a standardized math assessment.
Which one's closer to 3 when you count?
The children who in the dot game had the opportunity to sharpen their abilities by starting with the easier problems and gradually moving toward the hard problems did better at math.
20!
Our research showed basically with a five minute simple computer game that has nothing to do with numbers children actually could change their math performance from like a 60 percentile to like an 80 percentile.
Good job! What about seven?
By making kids better at doing these really simple dot judgements we also made them better at school based math at least temporarily.
How did you know whether there was more blue or more yellow?
Because I'm intelligent!
[laughter]
These results are really exciting to use because they show a very clear connection between an evolutionarily ancient set of abilities and a uniquely human set of formal math abilities.
Computer: Yay!
That raises lots of interesting questions including how long this kind of effect lasts and whether we can also improve children's math performance in a classroom setting.

That's right!

Two years ago, when Ivan Zelich was a 17-year-old school student, he co-developed a theorem that took the global scientific community by storm. He believes that the way that maths is taught in school needs to adapt and change – that we need to think of it as a creative journey and not simply a list of formulas to memorise. At age 17, Ivan Zelich co-developed a groundbreaking mathematical theorem that works faster than a computer and has applications in better understanding geometric structures. The Liang-Zelich Theorem paved the possibility for anyone to deal with the complexity of isopivotal cubics having only high-school level knowledge of mathematics. A paper on the theorem was published in the peer-reviewed, International Journal of Geometry, making Zelich and his collaborator Xuming Liang, the youngest contributors ever to the journal. Aside from his passion for numbers, Ivan is a swimming state champion, speaks six languages, and has represented Queensland in chess. He is currently undertaking his fast-tracked, undergraduate degree at University of Queensland. Some of the topics of the presentation include important problem solving, guidelines, overview of instruction, manipulatives, cra model, numerations, teaching strategies, technology, and more. This video is designed to concisely explain how the mathematics instruction shold work for classroom teachers. This video is part of an instructional playlist from teachings in education and Frank Avella. This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Is 26% proficiency in math acceptable to you? That's the question teacher and Synergy Academies Founder Dr. Randy Palisoc asks the TEDxManhattanBeach audience. With only 26% of U.S. twelfth graders proficient in mathematics, Randy shares his solution: teach math as a language. Putting words back into math lessons enables even the youngest school-age minds to grasp complex concepts, such as fractions, that are traditionally thought of as abstract and difficult to understand. In his stunningly simple and effective approach, math no longer creates problems for kids but solves them.

Randy Palisoc is a passionate educator, known for making math easy. A founder of the five-time national award winning Synergy Academies, Randy is proud to identify Synergy as an “in spite of” school. In spite of the fact that its students were disadvantaged and in spite of the fact that it did not have its own facility and had to pack up its classrooms every single week, his school was the first and only elementary school in South Los Angeles to ever win the National Blue Ribbon Award, and was named the #1 Urban Elementary School in America in 2013.

Seeking a broader impact, Randy left Synergy this year to start Ironbox Education. One of the ways he believes we can dramatically improve America’s schools is by doing a better job teaching math to our students in a way that makes sense to them. Randy believes implementing a few changes in the way we approach math will give students the confidence and thinking skills to be more competitive in a global economy.

Dan Finkel wants everyone to have fun with math. After completing his Ph.D. in algebraic geometry at the University of Washington, he decided that teaching math was the most important contribution he could make to the world. He has devoted much of his life to understanding and teaching the motivation, history, aesthetics, and deep structure of mathematics.

Dan is the Founder and Director of Operations of Math for Love, a Seattle-based organization devoted to transforming how math is taught and learned. A teacher of teachers and students, Dan works with schools, develops curriculum, leads teacher workshops, and gives talks on mathematics and education throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Dan is one of the creators of Prime Climb, the beautiful, colorful, mathematical board game. He contributes regularly to the New York Times Numberplay blog and hosts Seattle’s Julia Robinson Math Festival annually. In his spare time he performs improv comedy in Seattle.
