In today's video, we are talking about the Mukaab in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which is set to be the talk of the town in 2023. This megaproject is part of the New Murabba Development Company and is expected to double the size and population of the capital city.
With an $800 billion budget, the project is set to cover 19 square kilometers of land and will include 104,000 homes, 9,000 hotel rooms, 980,000 square meters of retail space, and 1.4 million square meters of office space. The Mukaab, the megaproject's centerpiece, is going to be the world's first immersive, experiential destination. With a cubic structure that's 400 meters high and wide, it will have a shimmering gold exterior and will combine traditional and cutting-edge technology.
The Mukaab will have retail, cultural, and tourist attractions, including hotels, residences, and recreational facilities. Additionally, it will have 1.8 million square meters of community facilities and 620,000 square meters of leisure facilities. There will also be a technology and design university, an innovation lab, and 80 cultural and entertainment venues. With the New Murabba Development Company aligning with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy away from oil, it's no wonder that the Mukaab has an auspicious completion deadline of 2030.
This megaproject is going to transform downtown Riyadh into one of the world's largest modern downtown areas and one of the top ten most liveable cities. The Mukaab is just one of many exciting projects in the region, including Neom, the Line Saudi Arabia, and the Cube Saudi Arabia. The Line, a New urban development
Many projects around the world share the same goal: building a sustainable and eco-friendly city. One example is the Songdo International Business District in South Korea, Forest City in Malaysia, or the New Administrative Capital in Egypt. Although some of the smart cities have been successfully implemented, most of them have failed to date and are maybe too ambitious. Recently, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia announced a whole new smart city called “The Line”.
Unlike most cities that are aligned along streets, Greenland's city is built in a single line running 170 kilometers into the country. Additionally, it uses renewable energy in order to completely eliminates gasoline cars. The concept manages to meld the need for public space and the need for transport as well as accommodating the needs of both locals and tourists. It is planned that members of the public will be able to live alongside commuters on a surface level, whilst two underground levels provide railway transportation, along with a high speed train that can travel across 170 kilometers. The high-speed line is one of the many doubts people have about executing such a mega-project. When you take into account the need to move from any point to another in 20 minutes, the task seems almost impossible. Even if you sped through your journey and made zero stops, just to make it in time. The average speed of the train would need to be 510 kilometers per hour just to reach it’s destination in time. For reference, Chinas $35 billion dollars bullet train from Beijing to Shanghai is one of the fastest commercial trains we know of and has an average speed of 380 km/h. But the train that would go beneath The Line would have to be much faster than this. In addition, many people already live on the planned site of the line and they will surely protest their removal. Relocating these people against their will is a very controversial endeavour and would most likely have a hugely negative impact on The Line. If this mega-project also intended to attract international customers, there's a chance it would quickly lose credibility or be seen in a negative light if the relocation of residents were required for this project to come into fruition. In conclusion, such a high price is probably too expensive even for a country as wealthy as Saudi Arabia.

I want the private sector to represent the majority of investment', Tourism Minister Ahmed Al Khateeb said in a Riyadh interview on Sunday, aiming to generate $60 billion to $80 billion by 2030. “This is an ambitious goal.” Saudi Arabia aims to invest $800 billion on tourism over the next decade to prepare for a post-oil future that includes metals mining and sports. By 2030, 150 million tourists, 70 million foreign, are expected.
The state and its sovereign wealth fund have been the cash lifeline for tourism development, but foreign direct investment, especially from the private sector, will be crucial to Vision 2030 as mega projects ramp up and spending needs balloon, said James Reeve, chief economist at Jadwa Investment Co.
Saudi Arabia is predicting deficits every year through 2026 and has delayed some 2030 projects due to funding and economic overheating.
Saudi Arabia had 100 million tourists in 2023, mostly locals. International tourists numbered 27 million, with many travelling for religious or business reasons. Since Riyadh is still a building hotbed, leisure trips are likely rare.
According to minister Khateeb, Saudi hopes the middle classes in India and China would expand international tourism and regard the UK as an attractive market. France and Germany are also promising, but places requiring flights over eight hours are difficult, he said.
A statement said the Ministry of Tourism started a new programme this week to encourage private investment, notably by lowering barriers to entrance, and may bring in $11 billion.

Whatever your preconceived notion of Saudi Arabia as a travel destination is, it’s about to be get a major renovation. Imagine Sindalah, for example, a 7-star private-island resort with three ultra-luxe resorts, 38 high-end restaurants and multiple superyacht marinas. Or Qiddiya, a futuristic city of 600,000 people rising from the desert floor, dedicated to e-sports and gaming. How about Trojena, a space-age ski resort built above the high desert? Or The Red Sea, a vast waterscape of 50 luxury resorts and 8,000 hotel rooms spread across 22 islands in a Maldives-style archipelago—powered entirely by wind and solar energy? Also in the works is The Rig, a $5-billion adventure theme park built on an off-shore oil platform. In addition, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a cruise destination, having recently bought a $300-million ship. Across the Kingdom, new roads, airports, golf courses and cruise terminals are rising from the sand. The map is literally being redrawn in real time. Then there are all the new hotels, with their thousands of freshly built rooms. The world’s most iconic hospitality companies—Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, St. Regis, Fairmont, Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and InterContinental—are falling over themselves to jump into a construction pipeline that’s churning faster than anywhere else in the world. Any one of these projects might momentarily pierce the travel industry’s fleeting attention span. But together, what’s going on in Saudi Arabia simply cannot be ignored. Indeed, it can be often difficult to visualize the vastness of Saudi Arabia’s physical transformation. Some of the most notable ongoing projects—including Sindalah, the 7-star private island, and Trojena, the improbable desert ski resort—fall within NEOM, a $500-billion built-from-scratch region in northwest Saudi Arabia where the Kingdom is creating new cities, resorts and other developments. At 10,200 square miles and bounded by the Red Sea to the south and the Gulf of Aqaba to the west, it’s roughly the size of Albania. Bankrolled mainly by the Kingdom’s $700-billion Public Investment Fund (PIF), the idea for NEOM was born out of Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s grand plan to shake off its historic reliance on oil and diversify its economy. One the scheme’s pillars involves reinventing the country as a global tourism juggernaut. When first announced in 2016, the Kingdom’s tourism goals seemed fanciful: Attract 100 million foreign and domestic visitors to the country every year and grow tourism’s share of the economy from about 3% to 10%. Oh, and do it all in just 14 years. That aspiration seemed all the more preposterous given that, in 2016, Saudi Arabia had not yet opened its doors to international leisure travelers. At the time, travel to the Kingdom was almost entirely restricted to three types of people: expatriate workers, those with business visas, and religious pilgrims visiting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

Euromonitor predicts that international tourists will spend $38 billion in 2030. But the total economic impact for Saudi Arabia will be far greater after adding in domestic travelers’ expenditures and the ripple effect of one million new tourism jobs. The World Travel & Tourism Council projects that, by 2032, Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector could contribute nearly $169 billion to its GDP, representing 17.1% of the total Saudi economy.

📺 "Brazil – A natural History" Part 1: FRAGILE FOREST
This enigmatic forest once stretched along the coast for thousands of kilometres. Now there is only 7% left. Yet it is still home for many remarkable animals. Muriqui are the largest monkeys in South America. These very rare, highly social creatures greet each other with hugs – the closer the friendship, the more intense the hugs. Great dusky swifts fly through the tumbling waters of the mighty Iguaçu Falls to build their nests on the slippery rock faces behind the curtains of water. Coatis are curious looking creatures with their long flexible noses and banded tails, making them quite comical. But appearances can be deceptive, and coatis are efficient hunters. They are also very social, living in all-female gangs that are composed of sisters, mothers and aunts. The females support one another in their day-to-day lives, keeping a watch out for predators. Blue manakins are also social, but in a completely different way. In the depths of the forest, the males of these startlingly colourful birds work as a team to court a female. Like miniature circus performers they jump and bounce on a branch, one after the other, to excite their audience. Only the lead artist gets to carry out the last act.
Brazil is a land of gigantic proportions. Energetic, flamboyant and fun, Brazil is also overwhelmingly beautiful. Within its mountains, seas, rainforests, deserts and millions of miles of rivers, are many of our planet’s last wild frontiers. Its diversity of life and landscape is second to none. This landmark super blue chip series filmed in a cinematographic style using latest technology chronicles and introduces Brazil, a vast country the size of the USA or Europe respectively. Brazil is an Eldorado of wildlife, extreme habitats and stunning landscapes. The five programmes explore five very different and spectacular regions and their wildlife. In each episode, the viewer will be taken on a journey across fabulous landscapes and will meet carefully selected, charismatic and little-known animal species. The series investigates their fight for survival and their amazing adaptations to local environments. It will show behaviour that will surprise even avid nature-lovers.
