REV - The Global Auto and Mobility Show from Deutsche Welle

Made in late 1946 or early 1947, this industrial film "New Automobiles" was produced by ABC and broadcast on that company's television network. At the time it was made, the industry was falling well short of its goals in terms of auto production, and the film seeks to explain that crisis. The film begins with a look at the wartime contribution of America's automobile industry, and then examines fitful transition back to making civilian vehicles. The film includes footage of the heads of the industry and factories of various companies including Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Hudson, Studebaker, Willys-Overland and Packard. The film shows the complex supply chain that supports manufacture of automobiles, and underscores the need to find innovative solutions to streamline the process and allow more cars to be made.

The film begins with shots of an auto factory during WWII producing tanks instead of cars, as well as artillery shells (2:30). Today, cars are once again being made, and the American public is interested in up to 10 million new cars. (1:35-4:02). At (4:08) a showroom is seen at a car dealer. A couple does some window shopping and then enters the dealership They talk with a salesman (4:03-5:22). An industry business meeting reveals that the production of automobiles by the industry is not meeting target goals by half (5:23-7:07). A man smokes a cigar in an office, George W. Mason of Nash - Kelvinator and head of the American Automobile Manufacturer's Association, indicates a lack of supplies is hampering production. James D. Mooney of Willys - Overland, maker of Jeep, dictates to a secretary. Chrysler president, K.P. Keller, talks to stock holders. Hudson President A.E. Barrett, speaks in front of a sign (8:21). C.E. Wilson, president of General Motors talks with two associates. Paul Hoffman, president of the Studebaker Corp. Postwar conversion of a plant from war production to production of civilian cars is now shown (7:08-9:26). Designers are shown creating streamlined new car designs (9:27-11:29). Now the film focuses on some of the raw materials that go into car production -- some of them are not what the public might think. Wheat field. A tractor, cows. Bees. African Americans harvest cotton in the fields. Sugar cane workers. Men chop rubber trees. Men chop crops, trudge through water. Piles of dirt. Iron ore mine pit. Factory at the mine pit. Animated chart shows auto mass production (11:30-13:47). A modern automobile plant assembly line. A man makes sure pieces are properly put in place, another hammers parts in. An engine block is pieced on the line. Completed engines move by a mini crane (13:48-15:37). Men use pulleys for pieces. A tire is placed into the back of a vehicle for shipment overseas. The vehicle is crated and then put on a ship, and ends up in what appears to be India where it is re-assembled. Now the film shows South American countries and other nations where raw materials are sourced for auto production. At (17:43), auto executives board a Chicago and Southern Airlines DC-3 airplane, on a tour to educate dealers about production problems. Western Union telegrams
(15:38-18:33). Bearings, brake springs, thermostats, pistons, shafts, work gloves, paper, etc. Office staff. Logistics -- because FEDEX doesn't yet exist, important parts that are delaying production are shipped on a Capital Airlines plane (18:34-20:14). The plane comes in for a landing in Willow Run Airport in Michigan. A Fisher Body tractor trailer pulls out of the airport and heads for the highway. At a designated spot, the truck stops, removes the trailer, and another truck continues on with the urgently needed parts. Now, a long montage showing an auto factory in full operation. (20:15-23:18). Men walk into work. The truck unloads the vital parts. A factory smokestack. White hot coke is put into cars for delivery to blast furnaces. Sparks fly as steel is made. The ingot is removed from the furnace and brought by crane to the finishing mill. Metal pieces come out of a machine. Some pieces are then fed into a machine. A board that shows trim pieces (23:19-26:17). Floors are swept and shavings are recycled. The pieces are placed into a baling machine. Bales are placed onto a conveyor and then put into a furnace. Steel is drilled. A sample is examined in an auto laboratory. A test for tensile strength is performed. A Ford sedan maneuvers on a test track. A truck carries new cars including a woody type station wagon from the factory ready to be sold (26:18-29:34). The couple who want to buy a new car shake the salesman's hand and leave, having made a deal to buy a new car (29:35-30:08). End credits (30:09-30:17).

Produced in the early 1970s as rising foreign imports caused the American auto industry to undergo a sea change, this color film touts the importance of American craftsmanship. It begins with a vitriolic assessment of how the number of foreign-made cars had increased on American roadways since the 1950s. In 1950, we are told at mark 01:20, less than one car in 1,000 came from overseas. Twenty years later the number stood at 170 out of every 1,000 vehicles. On that note, we are introduced to the Chevrolet production, “The Bug and the Beetle.” Beginning at mark 02:00, we see scenes of Volkswagen being unloaded from ships in Boston and Baltimore as the narrator says with disgust, “Just a few miles away they’re rolling right past the plant where Chevrolets are assembled, headed for our customers.”

The same “problem” exists on the West Coast, where just before mark 03:00 there are more scenes of Japanese products such Toyota, Nissan, and Datsun, and the revelation that 41 percent of all cars in Los Angeles County were foreign-made. It’s the same story in the Midwest, New England, Washington, D.C., and every other part of the country, including Flint, Michigan, the viewer is glumly informed at mark 04:05.

“But they’re not the enemy — they’re the competition,” says the narrator.

As a result, American car manufacturers are faced with a challenge and need to step it up, from the sales force that sells the product to the plant workers who make them, as we see foreign-made objects from stereos to baseball mitts to sweaters. “American motorcycles have just about disappeared,” it is said at mark 06:20. “We haven’t lost yet in the auto business … but we’ve forgotten how we made our business strong.” By coming to work, working hard, and doing the job right will make American manufacturers stronger. “Everybody has to show up and work every scheduled working day,” the narrator sternly says at mark 10:30. “Five out of five in a Chevrolet, that’s what we need. Three out of five isn’t enough to build a car to compete … If we can count on you, we won’t have to count foreign cars.”

⛽How many unique parts does a car have?
This card also prevents the parts factories from making too many parts and the assembly process from having to allocate space to store parts that are not immediately needed. As just mentioned, about 30,000 parts are needed to make a car. Since Toyota makes cars exactly the way customers order them, each car is unique.

⛽What's the most important part on a car?
Axles are used for steering, driving, and braking, meaning they are important for basically every aspect of vehicle use. One of the most important parts of your vehicle, your brake system is responsible for slowing you down and bringing you to a safe stop quickly and effectively.

⛽What are the 7 major components of an automobile?
The Block. Your engine's block is its main part
Pistons. As your spark plugs fire, the pistons pump up and down, compressing the mixture of air and fuel.
Cylinder Head. The head is located on top of the block and seals in gases.
Valves.
Camshaft.
Crankshaft.
Oil Pan.

Easily excitable Neal Page (Steve Martin) is somewhat of a control freak. Trying to get home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his wife (Laila Robins) and kids, his flight is rerouted to a distant city in Kansas because of a freak snowstorm, and his sanity begins to fray. He’s headed over to Rimac’s newly built campus, but he’s not checking out an all-new, all-electric hypercar - he will get up close and personal with Rimac’s new robotaxi concept! That’s right, the creators of the 1,914hp Rimac Nevera are creating an autonomous taxi!

So let’s take a closer look at the car. It’s called Verne, and Rimac are hoping it will start rolling out by as early as 2026! In terms of the size of the car, it looks like it could easily blend in within a city without standing out as an autonomous car. On the outside, it’s covered in sensors to help it manoeuvre around the streets, and in this early stage of development, the plan is for it to run only within cities rather than making longer journeys out of town.

On the inside, there are only two seats, and on the dash, there’s a huge screen that displays all the information you’ll need. It shows details of your journey, and comes with a choice of music, apps, and even the ability to play on an Xbox! The seats are highly customisable, with the option to recline should you so wish.

The taxi can be hailed via an app, and before it arrives you’ll even have the option to set the interior temperature and light settings!

The Verne is powered by a 60kWh battery which should offer enough range to run for a whole day in a city. It has a motor that drives the front wheels, can deliver around 200hp, and it weighs in at 2,100kg.

Ultra-processed food affects people’s mental abilities. That’s according to a new study in Australia which found older people were affected negatively by things like fast food and fizzy drinks. Meanwhile, research in the UK found almost 75% of calories in school lunches come from ultra-processed food. Health experts have called for there to be a limit on this type of food for schoolchildren.

More than 100 people have been killed in a crush at a religious gathering in northern India, officials have said.

The incident took place at a satsang (a Hindu religious event) in Hathras district in Uttar Pradesh state.

The victims, including a large number of women and some children, are still being identified.

Survivors have described how the disaster unfolded as they tried to leave the event in Mughalgarhi village.

A spokesperson for a senior police officer in Uttar Pradesh told the BBC it would "take hours to release the final tally", but confirmed at least 100 dead.

France's political rivals barely had time to digest the results of National Rally (RN)'s election success, before they had to kick-start a new campaign for the final vote.

The anti-immigration party secured one in three votes in the first round of parliamentary elections. They have now set their sights on winning an absolute majority.

RN leader Jordan Bardella, who hopes to be France's next PM, appealed to voters to make a choice between a left-wing alliance he called "an existential threat to the French nation" and a party of patriots ready to leap into action.

PM Gabriel Attal, who may be days from losing his job, says the stakes are clear - to stop the far right winning an absolute majority.

Emmanuel Macron, who called the election and propelled France into political crisis, still has three years as president and has vowed not to resign.

More than 90 countries and international organisations are attending the Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland, aimed at creating the broadest possible backing for a process that could help end the war in Ukraine.

On Friday, Vladimir Putin claimed he would agree to a ceasefire if Ukraine withdrew troops from four regions which Russia partially occupies and claims to have annexed.

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the Russian president's plan "propaganda" which effectively suggested that Ukraine "must withdraw from Ukraine".

Russia has not been invited, and its biggest backer China is not present, leading some to cast doubt on the summit's effectiveness.

Italy's PM Giorgia Meloni has welcomed leaders of the world's seven richest nations at the G7 summit in Italy.

The members - Canada, France Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the United States - meet throughout the year to discuss global events, with one set-piece summit a year.

They are expected to discuss a number of issues, including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

The group cannot pass laws - but some of their past decisions have had global effects, including backing a deal in 2021 to tax multinational companies.

This year, the summit is expected to agree a plan to use frozen Russian assets to raise billions of dollars for Ukraine.

Conflict between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah has prompted concerns from the US that it risks turning into a wider regional war.

The two sides have exchanged fire across the Lebanon-Israel border in recent weeks. Hezbollah said it is fighting Israel to support Hamas in Gaza.

Israel's military said that operational plans for an offensive in Lebanon had been "approved and validated".

The US sent its envoy to both sides of the border this week to try to resolve the conflict and to try and find diplomatic solution.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has accused Rishi Sunak of a “total lack of leadership” in his handling of betting allegations, saying the prime minister should suspend the Conservative candidates accused of betting on the date of the general election.

Sunak repeated that anyone found to have broken gambling rules will be booted out of the Conservative party, adding that a criminal investigation is now taking place into the matter.

Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey made the most of the good weather in Norfolk by taking a dip in the North Sea. Today, the party was focusing on its NHS dentistry policy, pledging an extra £750m funding in England.

Meanwhile, Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, said during an interview with the BBC that Europe and Nato provoked the war in Ukraine.

New figures have revealed how much money political parties raised during the second week of the campaign - Labour received more than £4.3m, Reform raised almost £750,000, and the Conservatives received less than £300k, lower than the amount brought in by the Lib Dems, which stood at £335,000.

The Princess Royal has been admitted to hospital after she was injured on her estate in Gloucestershire, says Buckingham Palace.

Princess Anne, 73, "sustained minor injuries and concussion following an incident" at her Gatcombe Park estate.

"She remains in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, as a precautionary measure for observation," said a palace statement.

She is expected to make a full and swift recovery, says the palace.

Kenya’s President William Ruto says he will withdraw a finance bill containing controversial tax hikes after deadly protests which saw parliament set ablaze on Tuesday.

In an address to the nation, he said it was clear that Kenyans "want nothing" to do with the bill.

"I concede," he said, adding that he will not sign the bill into law.

At least 22 people were killed in Tuesday’s protests, according to the state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHRC).
