Three people have been killed in a shooting at a luxury shopping mall in the centre of Thailand's capital, Bangkok, medics say.

Four other people were injured in the incident, including a foreign national.

A suspect - a 14-year-old boy - has been arrested after surrendering. He had been using a handgun, police said.

The prime minister said the situation had been brought under control and police were clearing the scene, according to the AFP news agency.

Dozens of gunmen from the Islamist militant group Hamas appear to have infiltrated southern Israel in a surprise rocket attack from the Gaza Strip.

Hundreds of people are being treated in Israeli hospitals, with at least one Israeli woman confirmed to have been killed in the attack.

Israel says most of the breach points from Gaza into Israel have been closed, mainly with tanks.

Hamas is a Palestinian Islamist militant group which rules the Gaza Strip.

Hamas is sworn to Israel's destruction and has fought several wars with Israel since it took power in Gaza in 2007.

In between those wars, it has fired or allowed other groups to fire thousands of rockets at Israel, and carried out other deadly attacks.

Israel has also repeatedly attacked Hamas with air strikes, and, together with Egypt, has blockaded the Gaza Strip since 2007 in what it says is for its security.

Hamas as a whole, or in some cases its military wing, is designated a terrorist group by Israel, the United States, the European Union and the UK, as well as other powers. Hamas is backed by Iran which funds it and provides weapons and training.

US President Joe Biden has said Israel has a right and a duty to respond to Hamas' attacks over the weekend, which he called an "act of sheer evil".

Biden said the US would "stand with Israel" and provide whatever assistance it needed, in a statement at the White House.

Some 1,200 people have died in Israel since Saturday, and more than 900 people have died in retaliatory Israeli air strikes on Gaza.

Israeli has formally declared war on the Hamas militant group as the number of its citizens killed by gunmen reached 700.

The Palestinian militants are believed to have seized as many as 100 hostages during their surprise attacks in Israel. The gunmen infiltrated Jewish communities near the border with Gaza, killing and seizing civilians and soldiers.

Social media images show women and children are among those seized and taken to Gaza by the Hamas gunmen.

Israel has launched a wave of attacks in the Gaza strip in retaliation with reports that hundreds of Palestinian civilians have been killed.

The full answer will take some time to emerge. But it seems as if surprise, scale and speed overwhelmed defences which were patchy and unprepared for what they faced.

Israeli intelligence failed to get inside the planning by Hamas for the attack. The group seems to have undertaken a long-term programme of deception to give the impression it was incapable or unwilling to launch an ambitious attack.

Former US Army Lieutenant general Mark Schwartz who served as the US Security Coordinator for the Israel-Palestinian Authority until 2021 spoke to the BBC about how this possibly happened.
