Zimbabwe activist pastor Evan Mawarire has been freed from prison, a day after the high court ordered his release on bail. Mawarire was detained at a maximum-security prison in Harare on subversion charges amid violent anti-government protests and faces up to 20 years in jail if convicted. Pastor Evan Mawararire has agreed to speak to us to share his experiences in jail and to explain the nature of the criminal charges he now has to fight in court.

Johannesburg, 19 July 2016 - Pastor Evan Mawarire was at the forefront of calls for the recent massive stay-away in Zimbabwe. He started the online movement This-Flag in April, in protest against deteriorating social and economic conditions there.

Evan Mawarire is a pastor who became a leading human rights and democracy advocate in Zimbabwe after posting videos calling on his fellow citizens to challenge the rule of Robert Mugabe. In November 2017, Mugabe was ousted by the military after 37 years in power. The new president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has promised that free and fair elections will be held by August of this year. Evan Mawarire spoke to FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman from Geneva about his hopes for change and democracy in his country.

Mawarire’'s #ThisFlag campaign started last year as a demand for constitutional rights, and led to widespread protests against the rule of President Mugabe. He was arrested for trying to overthrow the Mugabe government, but was later acquitted in a case that was viewed as a vital test of the judiciary's independence. He is encouraging his followers to hold the new government of President Mnangagwa to account over human rights and transparency.

A renowned pastor imprisoned in Zimbabwe's crackdown during the on-going unrest has told ITV News of the horrors he witnessed in a cramped cell of 53 people.

Evan Mawarire faces up to 20 years in jail if he is found guilty of subverting the state by condemning the government on social media while calling for peaceful protest.

The 41-year-old activist was among more than 1,000 recently arrested in scenes of violence and a brutal crackdown that saw a dozen people killed.
