Mark Williams-Thomas is a former police detective and a multi-award-winning investigative reporter. He is well known for working on investigations, including the "Yorkshire Ripper" Peter Sutcliffe. Williams-Thomas speaks with Insider about special investigative techniques and common issues in the process.
Williams-Thomas is the author of “Hunting Killers” and has starred in television programs and crime series looking at cold case murders and violent crimes, such as “The Investigator: A British Crime Story” on Netflix. He’s reported on crime stories including Jimmy Savile, Oscar Pistorius, and the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

One of the most expensive mattresses on the market is made from natural latex. It’s hypoallergenic, biodegradable, and more durable than memory foam. You can buy a memory-foam mattress for a few hundred dollars, but natural latex mattresses usually cost over $1,500 and can exceed $2,000. Latex sap from rubber trees is in high demand from dozens of industries, including car tires. This high demand has caused deforestation and displacement of farmers in places like Cambodia. Some mattress companies source their latex from organic and fair-trade-certified farms in places like Guatemala, but the latex from these farms comes at a premium compared to the latex from noncertified plantations. We explored why natural latex mattresses are so expensive.

The Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere and one of the largest in the world. Every day, specialized teams gear up to clean the hundreds of exhibits across all eight of the aquarium’s galleries. Workers use brushes, mechanized scrubbers, and scrapers to deep clean every inch of the habitats. All that waste is funneled to a filtration system beneath the aquarium, where some of it will be filtered and reused as top-off water for the aquarium's main attraction — Ocean Voyager.

He talks about martial arts choreography in and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (1990). He discusses the realism of ninjutsu training and skills in "Revenge of the Ninja" (1983) and "Ninja Assassin" (2009).
Kawakami is the last heir of the Ban clan of Kōka-ryū ninjutsu. He is also the honorary director of the Iga-ryu Ninja Museum and a historical-ninjutsu researcher and lecturer at Mie University.

Fish maw — the swim bladder of a fish — is one of the most expensive dried-seafood products in the world. A Chinese delicacy, it can fetch $450 to $1,000 per kilogram. It’s often viewed as a symbol of wealth and prosperity, and it's given out as gifts at important events and stockpiled as a speculative investment. It’s one of the “four treasures” of Cantonese cuisine, along with abalone, sea cucumber, and shark fin. But the main reason fish maw is so desired is its supposed medical value. Because of its high levels of collagen and fiber, it's believed to promote healthy skin, boost the immune system, and aid digestion. Fish maw is also often recommended in China for postpartum recovery and to reduce post-surgery pain. But because of overfishing in East Asia, China now imports the majority of its bladders from other countries, like Uganda. In Uganda, fishers compete for Nile perch in Lake Victoria and ship them to China for extremely high prices.

Stockfish is cod that is dried by cold air and wind, without using salt. It's one the most coveted sources of protein in Nigeria, where a bag of stockfish sells for $65 per kilogram, seven times as much as other popular fish like croaker. But its supply and prices are volatile. Stockfish cannot be made in Nigeria, and sellers in Nigeria have no control over how much fish is dried or how much of it gets there. It is dried thousands of miles away, in Norway, where there are entire operations dedicated to stockfish. So what does it take to get stockfish to Nigeria? And why is it so expensive?

India exports over $1.3 billion worth of handmade carpets annually. Obeetee, the country’s largest carpet maker, makes hundreds of thousands of them per year. And nearly all of its products go to America. Its clients include big retailers like Williams-Sonoma, West Elm, and Pottery Barn. Obeetee’s hand-knotted carpets can take up to a year to make, and can cost over $12,000. One small mistake anywhere in the process can lead to the brand rejecting a work. We visited its factory in Uttar Pradesh to see what it takes to produce 350,000 carpets a year, and the area became known as India's "carpet belt."

Elbroch explains mountain lion behavior and the accuracy of big-cat sounds in "Me Time" (2022), starring Kevin Hart; "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" (2006), with Will Ferrell; and "The Bear" (1988). He also breaks down the jaguar attack and the reality of having big cats in captivity in "Jungle Cruise" (2021), with Dwayne Johnson.
Elbroch is the director of the puma program at Panthera and has been studying mountain lions — also called pumas and cougars — for 20 years. He has written and coauthored 10 books on natural history, including "The Cougar Conundrum."

Fleur de sel is a rare, unrefined salt made in western France by evaporating seawater slowly in 2-centimeter-deep ponds. Fleur de sel is a salt that dissolves slowly, so its taste lingers in the mouth. But just about every step of the process to get this salt is difficult. Before harvesting, the wind has to be perfect. And during the harvest, salt producers need to be ready to collect the precious salt at any moment, or they won't make a profit. How The World’s Biggest Batches Of Food Are Made | Big Batches Season 2 Marathon | Insider Food
Jimmy Tsui is a former member of Tung On in New York City's Chinatown and of the Sun Yee On triad in Hong Kong.
In 1985 in New York, he was arrested and charged with robbery and homicide, with a $1.5 million-dollar bail. The case was later dismissed. This led to his transition into Sun Yee On, where he became a "426 general" in 1988.
He traveled back and forth between Hong Kong and New York City and was involved in karaoke bars, gambling houses, and various scams. In 1992, he was shot five times while sitting in his car. This ended his involvement in mob life. Around this time, the influence of the Chinese mafia in New York was declining, and Tsui's network dissolved.
Tsui speaks with Insider about how the triads make money, such as extortion and protection rackets. He discusses the initiation ceremonies and rules of membership as well as the ties to the movie business. He also covers the triads' global expansion.
After leaving the triads, Tsui got involved with Chinatown Gang Stories, a YouTube channel organized by Mike Moy, a former gang member, and New York City Police Department officer.

Cain Vincent Dyer, a former bank robber, breaks down the realism of group bank heists, as well as armored car and ATM robberies, in "Point Break" (1991), with Keanu Reeves; "The Town" (2010), starring Ben Affleck; and "Spider-Man: Homecoming" (2017), with Tom Holland and Zendaya. He looks at the safety protocols of banks and law enforcement when dealing with bank robberies in "2 Guns" (2013), with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg; "Hell or High Water" (2016), with Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges; "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" S4E21 (2017); and "Ambulance" (2022), with Jake Gyllenhaal. Dyer also explains the damage caused by robbing banks in "American Heist" (2014), with Hayden Christensen and Adrien Brody; and "Heaven's Burning" (1997).
Dyer served in the United States Marine Corps. He initially turned to bank robbery after threats to his family by a Mexican cartel, but after paying off the debt, he continued to rob banks for personal gain. He says he robbed over 100 banks across California between 1999 and 2001. He eventually turned himself in and served nine years in prison after pleading guilty to six robberies. He now works as a life coach and motivational speaker, working with victims of violent crime and helping newly released prisoners reintegrate into society.
Correction: At 01:06 the expert said that armored car truck guards are trained to shoot back in the event of an attack. The protocol actually depends on the laws of each state, and the armored car company.

Williams has been in the maritime industry for over 30 years, with her experience spanning from passenger vessels to the fishing industry. She has been a cruise ship captain for about five years, and she is the first Canadian woman to captain a major cruise ship brand, Virgin Voyages.
