'Fashion Curator Reviews Historic Costumes In Famous Movies'

Rosemary Harden, a dress curator and manager of the Fashion Museum Bath, a world-class museum of historical fashionable dress, reviews costumes in several well-known movies for historical accuracy.

First, Rosemary rates the outfits in court scenes from 'The Favourite' (2018), where Queen Anne was memorably played by Olivia Colman. Next up, she reviews costume in 'The Duchess' (2008), including those worn by Keira Knightley in her role as Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.

Both the film and TV version of Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' are up next, with Rosemary commenting on the accuracy of Colin Firth's famous white shirt. She also reviews the mourning dress of Queen Victoria in 'Victoria and Abdul' (2017).

The dress worn by Rose DeWitt Bukater in her first appearance in 'Titanic' (1997) is praised next. The tube carriage scene from 'Darkest Hour' (2017) is rated next for its portrayal of Londoners during the Blitz in the 1940s. And then, it's the dress of Margaret Thatcher as worn by Meryl Streep in 'The Iron Lady' (2011).

The final two scenes up for review are from Forest Gump (1994) and the famous shopping scene from 'Pretty Woman' (1990).

Breakdown artists, sometimes called agers, dyers, or textile artists, work behind the scenes to fake all the damage on a character’s costume. Sarah Blostein has done breakdown work on “The Boys,” “The Strain,” “Ready or Not,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “Station Eleven.” Because movie and TV show scenes are frequently shot out of order, sweat stains and rips have to be replicated. Sarah walked us through how to create convincing fresh and aged blood stains on a shirt, what materials look the most like dirt, and the very specific way to make a bullet hole look realistic.

Editor’s Note: The fake sweat Sarah uses in the video is a mixture of water and paint. Baby oil or glycerine are commonly used to create fake sweat on set. Additionally, Sarah used dark brown paint, as opposed to black, for the dried blood in “Ready or Not.”

If there's one thing most people know about our kids, it's that they love to dress up. Costume parties are a daily thing at our house. Our children have been known to go to the store or even out to eat in a costume! We have been collecting costumes for years and our best finds have come to us second-hand. Some of the costumes in this video were actually costumes I wore as a kid for Halloween--my mom (kids' grandma) made the clown costumes. Hope you enjoy the video because the kids spent their afternoons for an entire week filming this one. Costume changes take a long time!!
