ABIDJAN, COTE D’IVOIRE - Welcome to the beautiful country of Côte d’Ivoire (also known as Ivory Coast), in the heart of West Africa. Abidjan is the biggest city, and home to some incredibly tasty street bbq - including a unique vertical bbq and some of Africa’s fastest BBQ! Today we’re going on a full Ivorian street food tour!

A huge thank you to my friend Mo Soumahoro from Belle Côte d’Ivoire (https://www.instagram.com/bellecotedivoire/) for arranging my trip and setting up everything!

1. Breakfast - we started early in the morning and headed for a rare dish of steamed corn with thick sour milk porridge. It was unique and very hearty in the morning.

2. Plakali - One of the most beloved Ivorian foods is plakali, a thick stew of crabs and seafood with cow skin and okra. It’s a dish with so many components and texture and absolutely incredible.

3. Fried snacks - When you’re in Côte d’Ivoire you don’t want to miss all the delicious fried snack you’ll find all over Abidjan. It was awesome to hang out with Yasmine Fofana (https://www.instagram.com/afrofoodie/)

4. Pique chicken and fish and Ivorian choukouya - From this entire Abidjan street food tour, probably my favorite dish was the pique chicken and fish and the West African choukouya. The chicken and fish were skewered then marinated in spices and pepper then grilled in a sandbox - vertical bbq style. It kept the meat juicy and full of flavor. They also made delicious choukouya, where the chicken is first grilled, chopped, and mixed with onions and seasoning. It’s absolutely amazing.

5. Market + sandwich - Next up we continued on this West African street food tour at the market to see some local ingredients, and a tasty onion and egg sandwich.

6. Brochette and bread - Another classic Abidjan street food is grilled small skewers of meat stuffed into French bread with kankankan. It’s one of the fastest grilling techniques I’ve seen, and unbelievably tasty.

7, Grilled meat ending - Finally we had one more stop to eat more grilled meat, choukouya. Can’t get enough!

Angola chose the wrong day to put up a Luke-warm performance and it cost them a place in the Orange Africa Nations Cup after the 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast opened the door for Sudan 2-1 winners over Burkina Faso to pip Palancas Negras at the post. Angola finished on four points with Sudan but the Desert Hawks' scored enough goals to overtake Angola

Ivory Coast made several changes to the team that started the first two matches with quarter final place already assured. The changed Ivorian side proved a handful for Angola who just did not bring their A game on the night. In the end the Palancas Negras were so disjointed that they even contributed to their own downfall with defender Dani Massunguna in a miscommunication beat his own goalkeeper with a header that Wilfred Bony gladly helped on for Ivory Coast's second goal. Before that Emmanuel Eboue had put Ivory Coast in the lead in the 33rd minute from just a meter out after Angolan defender Miguel had failed to clear from a cross and had the ball stuck between his legs and when the ball fell kindly to Eboue he put it away.

Angola had possession for a good part of the game and had some chances too but it was not the Angola that imposed its style in the early games. Palancas Negras was largely unchanged side with only two players, Wilson in goal for suspended Carlos Fernandes and Dede coming in for veteran Flavio. The cohesion and usual sharpness was lacking and star striker Manucho was quiet by his standards. Even when down by two goals the urgency did not seem to be a priority for Angola and Angola coach Lito brought in Jose Vunguidica for Djalma and the change did breathe some life into the attack but the real threat for goals was still missing.
It was Ivory Coast who almost added to the score Bamba missed with his head from meters out after a flick from Lolo. At the other end Mateus wanted more time when he had a chance in Ivorian box and the delay led to recovery by defenders and Angola only got a corner.

There were a few more chances for both sides as the game opened up with Angola perhaps aware of Sudan's lead went in search of a goal which wasn't coming. Unfancied Zambia have won the Africa Cup of Nations after a penalty shootout victory over the Ivory Coast in Libreville, Gabon.

Didier Drogba could have won the game for the Elephants in normal time had he not blazed over a penalty awarded for a foul on Gervinho.

Gervinho then turned villain as he and Kolo Toure both missed in a dramatic shoot out that went to sudden death.

Africa Cup of Nations - The tournament provided an opportunity for African teams to showcase their talents and compete against each other for the title of African champions. It also helped to raise the profile of African football and increase its popularity around the world.

In this video, we take you on a beautiful journey to west Africa as we bring you the 10 things you didn’t know about Ivory Coast. The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire is a country located on the south coast of West Africa. It borders Guinea and Liberia to the west, Burkina Faso and Mali to the north, Ghana to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean) to the south. The area became a protectorate of France in 1843 and was consolidated as a French colony in 1893 amid the European scramble for Africa. It achieved independence in 1960. Ivory Coast has a surface area of about 322,463 km2 and a population of about 24 million people. The capital city of the country is yamoussoukro and Abidjan is the Economic Hub of the country. When it comes to west Africa, Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire) probably isn’t the first country you think of. Most people are much more familiar with Nigeria, Ghana, and Senegal. But despite being lesser-known, Ivory Coast is well worth knowing about. It has a long and storied history, like many of the other countries in the region, and unique cultural customs.

1. It is the world’s largest cocoa of producer

The Ivory coast is the world leader in the production and export of cocoa beans. The country produces around 1/3 of the entire world’s supply of cocoa. Most of the beans are grown by shareholding farmers on small plots throughout the country. In 2013 it shifted 1.448million metric tonnes of cocoa beans (31.6 percent of the world’s total), nearly double its nearest rival, Ghana. Large chocolate producers such as Cadbury, Hershey's, and Nestle buy Ivorian cocoa futures and options through Euronext whereby world prices are set.


2. It has the largest church in the world

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro is the largest church in the world. It has an area of 30,000 square meters and passed St. Peter’s Basilica when it was built. The cost to build it certainly wasn’t cheap, and the total came in at an astounding US$300 million. Finished in 1990, its design is said to have been inspired by its Vatican City sibling, with a hefty dose of Renaissance and Baroque style. It can hold about 18,000 worshipers, though is very rarely full.

3. It is one of the largest producer of cashew Nuts in the world

From tiny harvests two decades ago, the West African country now holds the cashew crown, supplanting India as the biggest producer of the nut. Helped by price guarantees for farmers, its harvest doubled from 380,000 tonnes in 2013 to 711,000 tonnes in 2017, amounting to 22 percent of global output. This year's production of the nut - known locally as "grey gold" - is expected to attain 750,000 tonnes. Curvy, rich in taste and filled with protein, the cashew is a familiar ingredient in salads, stir-fries, and other meals. But it also features in a widening range of other food products including cashew butter and cheese, and its oil has found uses in medicine, industrial resins, and cosmetics. Currently, the sector includes 250,000 producers grouped into a score of cooperatives and employs some 1.5 million people, directly or indirectly.




4. Life is expectancy is low in Ivory Coast

While Africa is the only continent that contains nations where the average life expectancy is below 60 - and there are 21 of them - the fifth lowest is in the Ivory Coast, at 53.3 years. The lowest is nearby Sierra Leone at 50.1 years.

Brazilian history class taught by professor Rafael Scopacasa on July 15 at the UFMG Summer School on Brazilian Studies 2019.

The course was held from July 15th to 26th, 2019.

The program comprises lectures on various Brazilian-related topics, Portuguese classes and cultural activities. The Summer School took place at UFMG main campus in Belo Horizonte and all activities were conducted in English.

Portugal forged a massive trading empire. It was an incredible achievement for a small country that had a very modest population. In this first part, we review the initial stages where Portuguese sailors and explorers launched themselves into the unknown and took the first steps at exploring. Men like Prince Henry the Navigator who set the ball in motion, Bartholomeu Dias who was the first to round the tip of Africa, and Vasco da Gama who was the first European to find a sea passage to India.

Portugal joined Spain in 1580, but I decided to make it only in 1581

Rio De Janeiro, November 12th, 1823. It's the early hours of the morning and Brazil's Constitutional assembly is in crisis! Originally formed to choose which Portuguese laws would apply to Brazil. The assembly has decided that instead, they will draft a Brazilian constitution. With the Brazilian party wanting to restrain the power of the monarchy and the rival Portuguese party wanting greater royal power, Emperor Pedro had to step in. Ensuing what is now called The Night of Agony.
