The Trump administration has revealed new visa rules aimed at restricting a practice known as “birth tourism."

In the last several years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of tourists coming from China to the United States. Their presence has helped boost many local economies in the U.S. Businesses expect the trend to continue and some of them are catering to this growing stream of tourists. Elizabeth Lee has more for VOA from Los Angeles.

Six people have been charged and more are being sought in a so-called "birth tourism" and money laundering scheme on Long Island that authorities say led to 119 children being born in the U.S.

Acting U.S. Attorney Seth DuCharme announced the details of the indictment Wednesday, saying the tourists are from Turkey and that 117 mothers traveled to Suffolk County to have their children before returning home.

The New York Times and Trip Advisor recently recommended Cuba as a top tourist destination, but the U.S. government prohibits U.S. citizens from visiting the island as tourists.

Despite the barriers, Diana and Kevin, two U.S. history professors who recently visited Cuba, say there are still ways to go there legally in 2023.

"I would really encourage folks to come to Cuba and then from that experience…come to your own conclusions about what Cuba is like as a country," says Diana.

It follows a January proposal to ban activities on Bali’s sacred mountains, a ban that was put in place in June. But just four months later, the mountain ban was reversed, and talks of a visitor cap vanished. Instead, the island surpassed tourist targets for 2023.

Commercial space flight is becoming more and more common with companies including SpaceX, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic all having flown paying customers into space over the last several years. But soon, those interested in seeing the earth from an unusual vantage point may have another option. A number of startups are hoping to hoist tourists to the stratosphere using pressurized capsules and massive gas-filled balloons. CNBC spoke to three of them, France-based Zephalto, Florida-based Space Perspective and Arizona-based World View.

The experiences would not take passengers all the way into space, the start of which is generally accepted by the U.S. government to be around 80 km or around 50 miles above the earth’s surface. Still, the companies we spoke to said passengers would be able to experience the “overview effect,” a common, highly emotional phenomenon felt by astronauts when they see the earth against the blackness of space. The rides would also be much smoother, avoiding the bone rattling experiences of rocket-powered space tourism.

A single trip would last about 6 hours and ticket prices range from $50,000/seat with World View to around $184,000/seat with Zephalto. All the stratospheric balloon companies we spoke to are still developing and testing their systems. Space Perspective and World View would not give CNBC an exact date for when they plan to begin commercial flights, but Zephalto said the company is aiming for 2025.

Greece: Santorini's Tourism Boom Sparks Local Dilemma

Tourists with their selfie sticks flock to Santorini, drawn by its picturesque sunsets. However, the influx of visitors, which reached 3.4 million last year, is straining the island's infrastructure and driving up housing costs, according to Mayor Nikos Zorzos. He advocates capping cruise ship visitors at 8,000 daily, down from 17,000, to mitigate these issues. Long-time resident Georgios Damigos notes a decline in living standards due to overcrowding, stretching the island's limited capacity to accommodate a large population. Conversely, Alexandros Pelekanos of Santorini's trade association believes improved infrastructure could support even more tourists. As similar protests erupt in other popular destinations like Venice and Barcelona, Santorini exemplifies the challenges of balancing tourism and local well-being. Despite these tensions, Greece's national tourism revenues are rising, with 2024 projected to surpass last year's record of 33 million tourist arrivals.

More than 20,000 people have taken part in a protest against mass tourism on the Spanish island of Majorca.

Around 18 million people visited Majorca and the other Balearic Islands the year.

This demonstration was the latest in a wave of anti-tourism demonstrations across Spain.

Tourists abandoned their tables as protesters squirted them with water guns in Spain. It happened in Barcelona which is a hugely popular tourist destination. It's just the latest reaction to the phenomenon of overtourism. The number of Americans heading to Europe this year is up 34% compared to last year. Barcelona, which has a population of 1.7 million, had more than 12 million visitors last year, many of them from the U.S. Inside Edition's Les Trent has more.

“What we saw in Barcelona, and to an extent what we saw yesterday, was protests that were very much being targeted at the tourists themselves.”

Thousands of demonstrators have poured onto the streets of Spain to protest against the influx of tourists in the area. Simon Hunter reports from Spain how protestors are taking out their frustrations on holidaymakers.
