Police in Nigeria have been put on red alert on Friday and may seek the help of the military after protests turned violent in some cities, leaving at least three people dead, the inspector general of police said.
Some major cities, including the capital Abuja and Kano in the north, which on Thursday witnessed clashes between police and demonstrators and looting, appeared calm early on Friday as protests were expected to continue.
Protesters have been angered by President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms that have caused rampant inflation, weakened the currency and inflicted increasing hardship on ordinary Nigerians.
‘’Things have been expensive in the market, Nigerians are suffering, Nigerians are hungry, Nigerians are angry. As you know in Nigeria today, a lot of people are unemployed. The issue of insecurity in the north and the south continues to increase every day. So we are here to just make our grievances known to the federal government," protest organizer, Abiodun Sanusi said.

Some protesters are regrouping in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital on Day 5 of the #EndBadGovernance protest carrying the Russian flag.
They said, they are facing insecurity in their communities, which the government has not taken concrete steps to address, hence they are to continue the protest until the government do the needful.
The protesters decried that the bandits had imposed heavy taxes on them to pay to avoid attacks and to access their farmlands, a development which they want the government to take necessary measures to protect the people against the bandits’ activities.
The protesters are mostly children and youths who came out this Monday marching across capital city of Gusau, notably Tundunwada, Freedom Square, Government House to Gada biyu among other areas
Meanwhile, security agencies, mostly operatives of the Nigerian Police, and the military are monitoring the protesters closely to ensure peace and order.

Millions of residents in northern Nigeria have been placed under 24-hour curfews amid nationwide protests against the high cost of living.
Governments in the states of Kano, Jigawa, Yobe and Katsina have ordered locals not to leave their homes - and therefore not attend protests - on Friday.
There is a heavy security presence around the country with nine more "days of rage" scheduled by the movement's organisers.
The nationwide demonstrations were organised via social media using the hashtag #EndBadGovernance and according to rights group Amnesty International, 13 protesters across Nigeria were killed by security forces on the first day of the protests.

Nigerians on Sunday refused President Bola Tinubu’s call for a suspension of protests against a cost of living crisis. Protesters in the commercial city of Lagos and the capital city Abuja said the president did not address their issues which include bringing back the subsidy and reducing the cost of education, and also failed to call for the arrest of the policemen who killed protesters in the last 3 days.

Protesters clashed with residents in Lagos on Friday during a demonstration against the country’s worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation.
Carrying placards, bells and Nigeria's green-and-white flag, the protesters were met with a heavy security presence on the streets of Lagos.
The protests were mainly over food shortages and accusations of misgovernment and corruption in Africa’s most populous country.
Nigeria’s public officials are among the best paid in Africa, a stark contrast in a country that has some of the world’s poorest and hungriest people despite being one of the continent’s top oil producers.
"The purchasing power of my salary has been completely eroded,” a protester told The Associated Press.
The mostly young protesters chanted songs as they listed their demands, including the reinstatement of gas and electricity subsidies that were cancelled as part of an economic reform effort.
Violence and looting were concentrated in Nigeria's northern states, which are among the hardest hit by hunger and insecurity.
Amnesty International's Nigeria office said at least nine people were killed by security forces in Nigeria during mass protests against the economic crisis gripping the country.
Authorities said a police officer was also killed and others injured, while four protesters were killed by a bomb.
Hundreds were arrested in the protests that triggered curfews in several states.
