This is a series of brief videos recorded at the BCTR Youth Research Update in June, 2012.
The 2012 Youth Development Research Update brought together practitioners and researchers for a day and a half to
- learn about new research in a variety of disciplines
- explore how these research findings could benefit young people, and which issues or questions need further study and exploration.
Travis Park, Associate Professor and Director of the Cornell Teacher Education Program, presented research related to disciplinary literacy in formal education, specifically agriculture and career and technical education and explored ways how these learnings and strategies can be used in in informal settings such as out-of-school programming.

Dr. Warschauer is director of the Digital Learning Lab at UC Irvine, where, together with colleagues and students, he works on a range of research projects related to digital media in education. In K-12 education, his team is developing and studying cloud-based tools for writing, exploring digital scaffolding for reading, investigating one-to-one programs with iPads and Chromebooks, examining use of interactive mobile robots for virtual inclusion, and developing mobile apps for language learning. The DLL team is also exploring new approaches to data mining, machine learning, and learning analytics to analyze the learning and educational data that result from use of new digital tools.

Raising a one year old kid, Zayn, I realized that there a number of things to be looked at. And one of the most important aspect is your child's education.
Of course every parent wants his/her child to get the best education. Therefore, they enroll him/her in the best school. But is enrolling in the formal education system actually worth it?
I don't think so. Thus, my wife and I have decided NOT to send Zayn to a school.
Now before you get all tensed and start throwing questionable looks around, I would urge you to watch this video, till the end, and try to understand a contrarian perspective towards formal education system. It's not a popular choice, but there are fact-based reasons why I staunchly advocate this.

In Pakistan, around 22.8 million children are out of school and 60 million young people and adults cannot read or write. These adults and children are unable to get admission in formal schools owing to the age and other circumstances such as social and economic conditions, ethnic and religious differences, and cultural and language barriers. Therefore, they needed alternative and accelerated education system.
JICA's Advancing Quality Alternative Learning Project (AQAL) has provided learning opportunities to out-of-school children, young people and adults through providing Accelerated Learning Program (ALP). The World Non-Formal Education Forum is an international platform co-convened by World Scouting, UNICEF, UNFPA and the OSGEY involving more than 70 leading international organisations, youth organisations and UN entities working on non-formal education and youth development. Over the course of three days, the Forum addressed the joint challenges facing the sector and built more support and recognition around the role of non-formal education in the global education agenda.
It took place from December 9-11, 2019. The Forum engaged member organisations of the International Coordination Meeting of Youth Organisations (ICMYO) and the “Big 6” group of youth organisations which includes the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.
The Forum was attended by over 400 participants including civil society representatives, UN and partner agencies, academics, government representatives, young people, members from across the Scout Movement, and experts on youth development.
