I made a mistake in 1720 in Maranhão/Piauí
Step inside JUMA Architects founders and directors Mathieu Luyens and Julie Van De Keere’s family home in Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium.
“Sint-Martens-Latem is one of the most coveted villages in Belgium,” Mathieu says, “not only because of its green environment but because it’s a creative village.” It’s here Mathieu and Julie conceptualised their brick home, where they live with their two daughters and feline friend Cookie. It’s also where you’ll find their adjoining studio – all built around ‘unique and irreplaceable trees’.
A long driveway bordered by old leafy trees leads to three connected brick volumes; a double garage, the architects’ office and Mathieu and Julie’s family home. While they all share the same material palette, the buildings differ in size and form. “It’s always been a really special place because I grew up here,” Julie says. “That’s why the ideas of what we wanted to do came really fast because I was so familiar with the surroundings here.”
Julie and Mathieu were met with the challenge of a ‘far from ideal’ orientation when designing their home. They approached it with the same penchant for drawn-out and low forms as in other projects, leading to an elongated floor plan. “The house isn’t the biggest house you have ever seen, but it is used very intensively,” Matthieu says. The master bedroom with walk-in-wardrobe and ensuite are kept as a separate suite on the first floor, while every other space, including the children’s bedrooms, are located on the ground floor.
The kitchen is the heart of the home – a crossroad that connects all of the communal spaces. “It was important that the floor needed to be the same as the countertop and the countertop needed to be resistant enough to be able to cook,” Matthieu says. “We like the fact that you can use the stone-filled and not filled,” he adds. “This gives a different dynamic.”
Mathieu attributes the home’s relaxing atmosphere to the material palette. “I think it was important to show you can combine a lot of different materials, even if the different spaces are very close,” he says. An example the architect cites is the master bedroom, walk-in robe and ensuite situated on the first floor. “Because those are the only rooms on the first floor and because of the materials and colours, this floor feels like a hotel suite,” he says. On the other hand, when seeking to recharge with family and friends, you’ll find Mathieu and Julie in the kitchen that connects to the outdoor pool area.
“Living here for a few years now, I just think I don’t want to change anything – I’m very happy with the way it is,” Matthieu says, with Julie adding, “It looks like the house has always been here…like it really belongs to its surroundings.”

Jimmy Tsui is a former member of Tung On in New York City's Chinatown and of the Sun Yee On triad in Hong Kong.
In 1985 in New York, he was arrested and charged with robbery and homicide, with a $1.5 million-dollar bail. The case was later dismissed. This led to his transition into Sun Yee On, where he became a "426 general" in 1988.
He traveled back and forth between Hong Kong and New York City and was involved in karaoke bars, gambling houses, and various scams. In 1992, he was shot five times while sitting in his car. This ended his involvement in mob life. Around this time, the influence of the Chinese mafia in New York was declining, and Tsui's network dissolved.
Tsui speaks with Insider about how the triads make money, such as extortion and protection rackets. He discusses the initiation ceremonies and rules of membership as well as the ties to the movie business. He also covers the triads' global expansion.
After leaving the triads, Tsui got involved with Chinatown Gang Stories, a YouTube channel organized by Mike Moy, a former gang member, and New York City Police Department officer.

This time the internet can’t keep calm after watching a 51-year-old shooter who bagged a silver medal in the mixed team 10-meter air pistol shooting. Yusuf Dikec, a Turkish shooter, has gone viral for his casual stance while he shot his way through a silver medal. The viral photo shows Dikec wearing his own standard glasses in place of a shooting lens and one hand in his pocket, aiming to take his shot. His stance is so unfazed that the internet can’t decide if he seems more like a regular guy or a hitman. Shooters often wear earplugs to minimize distractions and also use lenses to reduce glare and improve focus. Dikec's technique is unique since he shoots with both eyes open, whereas shooters usually keep one eye close to increase focus. The event took place in Chateauroux, central France.

The Chinese pilots participating in the Aviadarts 2021 competition under the International Army Games 2021 performed their first adaptive training flights at the host Russia's Dubrovichi training ground at Ryazan region on Sunday.
The aircrew practiced takeoffs and landings, studied the routes and airways in the area of such stages of the competition as piloting technique, aerial reconnaissance and navigation.
The training of the Y-20 large transport aircrafts focused on precise navigation, landing and heavy equipment projection. Though affected by heavy rain, the Y-20 aircrew still finished the training successfully.
The aircrews also adjusted their material handling methods basing on local environment and adopted united load device (ULD) to improve efficiency and guarantee in-time maintenance and other supportive work.
The opening of Aviadarts International Air Crew Training Competition of the International Army Games 2021 will take place on August 22. The competition will be attended by teams from the People's Republic of China, the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation, with about 60 crews in total.
A total of 11 aircraft of the PLA Air Force, including H-6K bombers, J-10B fighter jets, J-16 fighter jets, a Y-20 large transport aircraft and a Y-9 tactical transport aircraft, as well as a team of airborne troops will participate in four competitions in Aviation Darts event of the Games.
