What is the first aid treatment for a head injury?
Apply firm pressure to the wound with sterile gauze or a clean cloth. But don't apply direct pressure to the wound if you suspect a skull fracture. Watch for changes in breathing and alertness. If the person shows no signs of circulation — no breathing, coughing, or movement — begin CPR.

- *Situation Overview:* Learn what to do if you encounter someone who may have drowned.
- *Safety First:* Always ensure your safety before attempting a rescue.

*🌊 Drowning vs Other Emergencies*

- *Water Risks:* Be aware of cold water temperatures, underwater obstructions, and currents.

*🩺 Modified CPR for Drowning Cases*
- *Initial Steps:* After ensuring the victim is on their back, open the airway and check for breathing.
- *First Aid Procedure:*
- If no breathing, deliver five initial rescue breaths.
- Follow with 30 compressions and two breaths for one minute.
- The 'Call Fast' approach: If alone, call for emergency services after one minute of CPR.

*💡 Continuation of CPR*
- *Ongoing Care:* Continue with 30 compressions and two breaths until EMS arrives or you're instructed otherwise.
- *Reasoning:* Initial breaths aim to restart breathing; CPR follows if there's no response.

*👶 CPR Sequence for Children*
- *Ages 1 to 18:* The sequence for drowning is consistent for children in this age range.

---

*💡 Quick and informed action in drowning scenarios can save lives. Be prepared to respond effectively.*

What to do if you or someone else may be having a heart attack
Call 1066 or your local emergency number. Don't ignore the symptoms of a heart attack. If you can't get an ambulance or emergency vehicle to come to you, have a neighbor or a friend drive you to the nearest hospital. Drive yourself only if you have no other option. Because your condition can worsen, driving yourself puts you and others at risk.
Chew and swallow an aspirin while waiting for emergency help. Aspirin helps keep your blood from clotting. When taken during a heart attack, it could reduce heart damage. Don't take aspirin if you are allergic to it or have been told by your doctor never to take aspirin.
Take nitroglycerin, if prescribed. If you think you're having a heart attack and your doctor has previously prescribed nitroglycerin for you, take it as directed while waiting for emergency medical help.
Begin CPR if the person is unconscious. If the person isn't breathing or you don't find a pulse, begin CPR to keep blood flowing after you call for emergency medical help.

Push hard and fast on the center of the person's chest in a fairly rapid rhythm — about 100 to 120 compressions a minute.

If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is immediately available and the person is unconscious, follow the device instructions for using it.

What is the Initial First Aid Treatment for Minor Burns?

Stop the burning process as soon as possible. This may mean removing the person from the area, dousing flames with water, or smothering flames with a blanket. Do not put yourself at risk of getting burnt as well.
Remove any clothing or jewellery near the burnt area of skin, including babies' nappies. But do not try to remove anything that's stuck to the burnt skin, as this could cause more damage.
Cool the burn with cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes as soon as possible after the injury. Never use ice, iced water, or any creams or greasy substances like butter.
Keep yourself or the person warm. Use a blanket or layers of clothing, but avoid putting them on the injured area. Keeping warm will prevent hypothermia, where a person's body temperature drops below 35C (95F). This is a risk if you're cooling a large burnt area, particularly in young children and elderly people.
Cover the burn with cling film. Put the cling film in a layer over the burn, rather than wrapping it around a limb. A clean clear plastic bag can be used for burns on your hand.
Treat the pain from a burn with paracetamol or ibuprofen. Always check the manufacturer's instructions when using over-the-counter medication. Children under 16 years of age should not be given aspirin.
Sit upright as much as possible if the face or eyes are burnt. Avoid lying down for as long as possible, as this will help reduce swelling.

What is the first aid treatment for anaphylaxis?
If you're with someone having an allergic reaction with signs of anaphylaxis:
Immediately call 1066.
Ask the person if he or she is carrying an epinephrine autoinjector to treat an allergic attack.
If the person says he or she needs to use an autoinjector, ask whether you should help inject the medication. This is usually done by pressing the autoinjector against the person's thigh.
Have the person lie still on his or her back.
Loosen tight clothing and cover the person with a blanket. Don't give the person anything to drink.
If there's vomiting or bleeding from the mouth, turn the person on his or her side to prevent choking.
If there are no signs of breathing, coughing or movement, begin CPR. Do uninterrupted chest presses — about 100 every minute — until paramedics arrive.
Get emergency treatment even if symptoms start to improve. After anaphylaxis, it's possible for symptoms to recur. Monitoring in a hospital for several hours is usually necessary.

M.I.C.E. is an acronym meant to remind you how to apply first aid treatment for an ankle sprain.

The "M" stands for Motion, specifically dorsiflexion, or flexing the foot upwards. The idea is to get to this motion as quickly as possible after injury, but in a slow pain free manner, before swelling occurs, and once you get this motion, keep it.

The "I" in M.I.C.E. stands for Ice. Ice cubes in a plastic bag may be applied directly to the skin for a period of 20 minutes at a time.
For those sensitive to cold, a thin cloth may be applied between the ice and skin.
After 20 minutes, remove the ice and allow at least an hour for the skin to return to normal temperatures before applying ice again.
Never apply heat to an acute injury as this will increase bleeding and swelling.

The "C" in M.I.C.E. stands for compression. Compression is used to hold the ice bag in place over the site of injury, and after icing to help keep the swelling to a minimum and provide gentle support to the ankle.

"E" is for Elevation. Elevating an injury 12 to 18 inches above the heart significantly reduces the blood pressure to the injured tissues and decreases the amount of swelling after injury.

The next time you are faced with an ankle sprain, just M.I.C.E.
