When George Washington Carver arrived in the South, only about one-fifth of Black farmers owned any land. The overreliance on cotton as the region's main cash crop depleted the soil of its nutrients, and the sharecropper system kept tenant farmers in a permanent state of poverty. Improving the practice of Southern agriculture and the conditions of poor farmers became Carver's chief concern.

With the blessing of fertile soil and the abundance of rivers, Asia’s main occupation is agriculture. Agricultural projects account for major exports in Asia. Different kinds of farming practices are followed here and one of the most popular methods of farming is known as Irrigation Farming where water from canals and borewells is used for cultivation. This reduces our farmers’ dependency on the monsoons. Are there other methods of farming? What are the main crops that are grown in Asia and why? Watch this video and learn all about agriculture in Asia.

What are the other methods of farming followed around the world? Let us know in the comments section below.

Good agricultural practice (GAP) are specific methods which, when applied to agriculture, create food for consumers or further processing that is safe and wholesome. While there are numerous competing definitions of what methods constitute good agricultural practice there are several broadly accepted schemes that producers can adhere to
The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) uses good agricultural practice as a collection of principles to apply for on-farm production and post-production processes, resulting in safe and healthy food and non-food agricultural products, while taking into account economical, social and environmental sustainability.
GAPs may be applied to a wide range of farming systems and at different scales. They are applied through sustainable agricultural methods, Economically and efficiently produce sufficient (food security), safe (food safety) and nutritious food (food quality);Research that works for developing countries and Australia. GAPs require maintaining a common database on integrated production techniques for each of the major agro-ecological area (see ecoregion), thus to collect, analyze and disseminate information of good practices in relevant geographical contexts.
Mamun Hasan Pondicherry University
United States Department of Agriculture GAP/GHP Program
The United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Marketing Service currently operates an audit/certification program to verify that farms use good agricultural practice and/or good handling practice. This is a voluntary program typically utilized by growers and packers to satisfy contractual requirements with retail and food service buyers. The program was implemented in 2002 after the New Jersey Department of Agriculture petitioned USDA-AMS to implement an audit based program to verify conformance to the 1998 Food & Drug Administration publication entitled, "Guide to Minimize Microbial Food Safety Hazards for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables."
The program has been updated several times since 2002, and includes additional certification programs such as commodity specific audit programs for mushrooms, tomatoes, leafy greens, and cantaloupes. In 2009, USDA-AMS participated in the GAPs Harmonization Initiative which "harmonized" 14 of the major North American GAP audit standards, which in 2011 resulted in the release and implementation of the Produce GAPs Harmonized Food Safety Standard.

What is sustainable agriculture?

Global food supplies are currently facing a huge challenge. As the global population rises, so too does the need for food. With a global population expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, according to the UN, there’s a need to increase food production by 70% in the next 30 years to ensure enough food for everyone and avoid further food insecurity.
Food insecurity is becoming more recognized as a global issue that affects an estimated 750 million people.
In addition to this, the agricultural industry can have its own environmental impact.
Some problematic areas that are primed for improvement include greenhouse gases (GHGs) from food waste decomposition, the effects of fertilizer and pesticide use on wildlife and surrounding areas, the eutrophication (growth of algae in water sources leading to the eventual die-off of all fish and plants) and monoculture agriculture (where one crop is grown on the land at a time) which can lead to land degradation making the land unsuitable for further farming.
In this article on sustainable agriculture as part of our sustainability series, we’re looking at what is sustainable agriculture, the current problems with agriculture and what we can do to improve and provide some solutions in the form of Agroecology and Agtech.

Smallholder farmers who have learnt new climate-smart practices can secure their livelihoods and improve the food security in their households.

Under the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) component in the R4 Rural Resilience Initiative, farmers have, over time, learnt new technologies such as use of the ripper-tine, climate-smart principles like conservation agriculture and seeing the advantages of these approaches in their farming systems.

Through the scaling approach, farmers observe widespread benefits of adopting climate-smart technologies and increased resilience against climate-induced shocks and stresses. The initiative is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and the World Food Program (WFP).

The use of digital extension, educational videos and agricultural 3D animations is very limited in Africa.

Animated training video can help to promote Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). Their application has the potential to increase yields significantly and improves farmer livelihoods in rural areas.
The Sustainable Smallholder Agri-Business Programme (SSAB) therefore used well-proven and research-based analog training material to develop 3D animated training videos to further promote GAP application.

Please see our animated training video on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for Maize (information apply to Ghana).

GLOBALG.A.P. - Putting Food Safety and Sustainability on the Map
GLOBALG.A.P. is a trademark and a set of standards for good agricultural practices (G.A.P.).

We are a global organization with a crucial objective: safe, sustainable agriculture worldwide. We set voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products around the globe – and more and more producers, suppliers, and buyers are harmonizing their certification standards to match our Company’s Purpose.

Our Company’s Purpose
Every generation has a right to safe food, and we support farmers to connect them to markets where they can sell their safely and sustainably produced agricultural products by developing and implementing farm assurance systems that are based on facts and recognized across the supply chain.

Sustainable agriculture is farming to meet society's current food needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. These practices improve crop yield while conserving soil, water, and other natural resources.

Sustainable agriculture practices are supported under the ‘Enhancement of Smallholder Spice Farmer’s Capacities in Sustainable Farming’ project in four Indian states - Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rajasthan. The project is part of the develoPPP.de Programme implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The lead executing agency for this project is AVT McCormick.

What are agricultural practices?

There are following 7 step agricultural practices?
1) Soil Prepration
a) ploughing
b) levelling
c) manuring
2) Sowing
3) Manuring
4) Irrigation
5) weeding
6) Harvesting
7) Storage

Soil Preparation
The preparation of the soil is the first step involved in good agricultural practices. Before growing a crop, plow, level, and manure the soil. Loosening and digging the soil using a plow is called plowing. After plowing, level the soil evenly and manure it. This is how the soil is prepared before growing a crop.

Sowing
The process next to soil preparation is sowing. Select seeds belonging to high-quality crop strains. Disperse the seeds in the field either manually with hands or mechanically using drilling machines.

Addition of fertilizers and manure
The process of the addition of fertilizers and manure to the soil to improve its fertility is called manuring. Manuring is done to provide the crop with essential nutrients and minerals. Fertilizers could be either natural or chemical. Natural fertilizers called manure are composed of animal & plant waste. Manuring not only provides essential nutrients to the crop but also enhances soil fertility.

Irrigation
Irrigation is the process of supplying an adequate amount of water to the crop. Oversupply of water results in waterlogging whereas undersupply of water leads to death of the crop. Irrigation should be adequate and timely. The interval and frequency of the water supply should be controlled.

Weeding
The unwanted plants growing amidst the crop are called weeds. The process of eliminating weeds from the crop is called weeding. Weeds may be removed manually, mechanically, or chemically.

Harvesting

After the crop matures, it is harvested. It is cut and gathered. The grains are then separated either manually (winnowing) or thrashing. There are a few best practices that need to be followed while harvesting. The best practices include:

Ensure that the harvesting is done at the right time.
Ensure that the yield contains the right moisture content. The ideal moisture content ranges from 20 to 25%.
Threshing should be done at the right time. Do not delay threading schedules to avoid grain breakage and rewetting.
If you are a machine for threshing, make sure the settings are made appropriately.

Storage of the yield
The last and significant activity involved in agriculture is storing the yield appropriately. The yield may be stored in bins or granaries. This is the stage where the yield needs utmost care and protection from rodents & other pests. The yield must be subjected to processes like fumigation, cleaning, and drying before storing.

Thousands of farmers in India have blocked roads and rail lines to protest against new laws approved earlier this week.
They are worried they will not continue to get guaranteed prices for their grain.
The government wants to loosen rules on who can buy wholesale produce.
Farmers say the changes could allow large private buyers, like supermarket chains, to control the market and drive down prices.
Al Jazeera's Charles Stratford reports.
