Louisiana produces 90% of the United States crawfish. Most of the farmed crawfish comes from rice fields in one small area of Cajun country. There, the industry is fairly new. In the 1980s, rice farmers experimented with cultivating crawfish in their fields. And it paid off. Today, business is booming, clearing the way for the next generation of farmers like Madison McIntyre. But the industry is also unregulated and fast-moving, trapping producers in an endless fight to keep crawfish alive.

Fish maw — the swim bladder of a fish — is one of the most expensive dried-seafood products in the world. A Chinese delicacy, it can fetch $450 to $1,000 per kilogram. It’s often viewed as a symbol of wealth and prosperity, and it's given out as gifts at important events and stockpiled as a speculative investment. It’s one of the “four treasures” of Cantonese cuisine, along with abalone, sea cucumber, and shark fin. But the main reason fish maw is so desired is its supposed medical value. Because of its high levels of collagen and fiber, it's believed to promote healthy skin, boost the immune system, and aid digestion. Fish maw is also often recommended in China for postpartum recovery and to reduce post-surgery pain. But because of overfishing in East Asia, China now imports the majority of its bladders from other countries, like Uganda. In Uganda, fishers compete for Nile perch in Lake Victoria and ship them to China for extremely high prices.

Stockfish is cod that is dried by cold air and wind, without using salt. It's one the most coveted sources of protein in Nigeria, where a bag of stockfish sells for $65 per kilogram, seven times as much as other popular fish like croaker. But its supply and prices are volatile. Stockfish cannot be made in Nigeria, and sellers in Nigeria have no control over how much fish is dried or how much of it gets there. It is dried thousands of miles away, in Norway, where there are entire operations dedicated to stockfish. So what does it take to get stockfish to Nigeria? And why is it so expensive?

Household pieces like wine glasses cost about $150, but vases and other pieces go for well over $1,000. Waterford made the famous Times Square Ball and also makes trophies for events like the PGA Tour, Formula 1, and the People’s Choice Awards. It’s not just the name that fetches high prices, however, but the uniqueness of the patterns as well as the skilled, handmade craftsmanship and eight years of apprenticeship that go into each piece.

It's no secret that luxury clothing and accessories command a high price tag, but the reasons for why fashion items have a high cost can vary. For something like Stetson cowboy hats, it can be a combination of choice materials plus the cultural significance of the brand with celebrity endorsements like Beyonce and Dua Lipa. For others, brands create a business strategy based on limited supply and rarity, like Supreme drops and the Air Jordan resale market. Still other luxury prices boil down to the time-intensive methods used to create something like a single pair of Momotaro denim pants in Kojima, Japan. We take a journey across the globe to see how some of the most expensive luxury fashion items are made, and why they're so expensive.

Once pierced, century-old maple trees drip sap referred to as liquid gold. It will take roughly 50 gallons of these drops to make one 1 gallon of 100% pure Grade A maple syrup. Farms in the Hudson Valley, New York State, can sell that gallon for over $200, almost 29 times more than popular imitation syrup. Despite the price, Grade A maple syrup is incredibly sought-after. So much so that C$18 million worth of it was stolen in one of the largest heists in Canadian history.

Golden kiwis are a pricey kiwi variety known for their yellow flesh and sweet taste. Created by Zespri, New Zealand's kiwifruit cooperative, golden kiwis saved the island nation's local kiwi industry after a disease destroyed most of its kiwi orchards back in 2010. Despite costing nearly twice as much as standard green kiwis, golden kiwis have proven more popular — and more profitable. Zespri's SunGold kiwi strain is so valuable that its sprouts have been smuggled overseas and sold in lots for 60,000 New Zealand dollars. But how can a fruit be under copyright? And what makes this particular kiwi so expensive?

India exports over $1.3 billion worth of handmade carpets annually. Obeetee, the country’s largest carpet maker, makes hundreds of thousands of them per year. And nearly all of its products go to America. Its clients include big retailers like Williams-Sonoma, West Elm, and Pottery Barn. Obeetee’s hand-knotted carpets can take up to a year to make, and can cost over $12,000. One small mistake anywhere in the process can lead to the brand rejecting a work. We visited its factory in Uttar Pradesh to see what it takes to produce 350,000 carpets a year, and the area became known as India's "carpet belt."

Since 2013, OddFellows has made over 600 flavors of ice cream. From miso cherry to wasabi chocolate chip, the company has always embraced making wacky and weird flavors come to life. But one of the most challenging flavors it's ever created was taking a classic chocolate ice cream and making it into a non-dairy vegan chocolate chunk ice cream.

We visited its co-packaging facility in the Bronx, New York, to see how OddFellows makes its ice cream in such big batches.

While palm oil is known for being cheap and controversial, red palm oil is artisanal made and much more expensive. The vibrantly colored oil is made from palm fruits and can cost three times as much as its kernel-oil counterpart.

Despite the high cost, the handmade oil is a staple in West African households, used to make local dishes like jollof rice and banga soup. But what makes it different from palm oil? And why exactly is it so expensive?

Fleur de sel is a rare, unrefined salt made in western France by evaporating seawater slowly in 2-centimeter-deep ponds. Fleur de sel is a salt that dissolves slowly, so its taste lingers in the mouth. But just about every step of the process to get this salt is difficult. Before harvesting, the wind has to be perfect. And during the harvest, salt producers need to be ready to collect the precious salt at any moment, or they won't make a profit. Even if they seize the right moment, the salt has to dry for an entire year before it can be sold. In France it costs 230 times the price of table salt, and can sell for $420 per kilogram in the US. So, is it always worth it to produce fleur de sel? And why is it so expensive?

Nuclear-weapons physicist Greg Spriggs rates seven nuclear-explosion scenes in movies.

He analyzes the portrayal of nuclear detonations and their effects in Steven Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (2008), starring Harrison Ford; “Broken Arrow” (1996), starring John Travolta; Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012), starring Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, and Anne Hathaway; and Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove” (1964). He also comments on what a nuclear explosion in outer space would really look like in comparison to Marvel’s “The Avengers” (2012), starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and Scarlett Johansson; and Michael Bay’s “Armageddon” (1998), starring Ben Affleck, Bruce Willis, and Liv Tyler. He breaks down the underwater detonation seen in “American Assassin” (2017), starring Michael Keaton. And he explains how accurate Christopher Nolan’s recreation of the construction of the first atomic bomb in Los Alamos and the subsequent Trinity test was in "Oppenheimer” (2023), starring Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh.

Spriggs has been a nuclear-weapons physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for 20 years. He worked on a special project where he scanned, reanalyzed, and declassified old nuclear test films.

You can find more information about the Livermore National Laboratory at: www.llnl.gov

These movies show simulations of the effects of using nuclear weapons near the public. To date, the 1945 atomic bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the only instances of nuclear weapons being detonated as an act of war.

Jimmy Tsui is a former member of Tung On in New York City's Chinatown and of the Sun Yee On triad in Hong Kong.

In 1985 in New York, he was arrested and charged with robbery and homicide, with a $1.5 million-dollar bail. The case was later dismissed. This led to his transition into Sun Yee On, where he became a "426 general" in 1988.

He traveled back and forth between Hong Kong and New York City and was involved in karaoke bars, gambling houses, and various scams. In 1992, he was shot five times while sitting in his car. This ended his involvement in mob life. Around this time, the influence of the Chinese mafia in New York was declining, and Tsui's network dissolved.
Tsui speaks with Insider about how the triads make money, such as extortion and protection rackets. He discusses the initiation ceremonies and rules of membership as well as the ties to the movie business. He also covers the triads' global expansion.

After leaving the triads, Tsui got involved with Chinatown Gang Stories, a YouTube channel organized by Mike Moy, a former gang member, and New York City Police Department officer.

Cain Vincent Dyer, a former bank robber, breaks down the realism of group bank heists, as well as armored car and ATM robberies, in "Point Break" (1991), with Keanu Reeves; "The Town" (2010), starring Ben Affleck; and "Spider-Man: Homecoming" (2017), with Tom Holland and Zendaya. He looks at the safety protocols of banks and law enforcement when dealing with bank robberies in "2 Guns" (2013), with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg; "Hell or High Water" (2016), with Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges; "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" S4E21 (2017); and "Ambulance" (2022), with Jake Gyllenhaal. Dyer also explains the damage caused by robbing banks in "American Heist" (2014), with Hayden Christensen and Adrien Brody; and "Heaven's Burning" (1997).

Dyer served in the United States Marine Corps. He initially turned to bank robbery after threats to his family by a Mexican cartel, but after paying off the debt, he continued to rob banks for personal gain. He says he robbed over 100 banks across California between 1999 and 2001. He eventually turned himself in and served nine years in prison after pleading guilty to six robberies. He now works as a life coach and motivational speaker, working with victims of violent crime and helping newly released prisoners reintegrate into society.

Correction: At 01:06 the expert said that armored car truck guards are trained to shoot back in the event of an attack. The protocol actually depends on the laws of each state, and the armored car company.

Cruise ship captain Wendy Williams rates eight cruise ship disasters in movies and television shows for realism.

Williams breaks down how cruise ships deal with hitting an iceberg, rogue waves, and tsunamis in "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972); the sinking scene in "Titanic" (1997), starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet; and the capsized vessel in "Poseidon" (2006). She explains how cruise ships address health issues and passenger safety on board in "The Simpsons" S23E19 (2012), the boat jail scene in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" S11E9 and E10 (2016), and the cruise ship holiday nightmare in "Triangle of Sadness" (2022), with Woody Harrelson. Williams also looks at the plausibility of cruise ship systems being corrupted in "Deep Rising" (1998), and the shipwreck scene in "Speed 2: Cruise Control" (1997), with Willem Dafoe and Sandra Bullock. She compares fictional depictions to real-life cruise disasters, such as the Diamond Princess cruise ship, and shares tips for travelers.

Williams has been in the maritime industry for over 30 years, with her experience spanning from passenger vessels to the fishing industry. She has been a cruise ship captain for about five years, and she is the first Canadian woman to captain a major cruise ship brand, Virgin Voyages.

Inspired by traditional bakeries in France and Belgium, the patisserie is best known for its buttery croissants. But making 21,000 of them every week is easier said than done.

We visited its bakery in Brooklyn to see how it makes these croissants in such big batches.

For over 200 years, tailors have been crafting high-end bespoke suits on London's famous Savile Row. A custom-made two-piece suit can cost £6,000. And while a tailor's tools are simple, the skills needed to turn a paper pattern into a pressed suit takes years to master. We followed Kathryn Sargent, the first female Master Tailor on Savile Row, to find out how she crafts a bespoke suit — and to learn what makes Savile Row suits so expensive.
