What do you do when someone's choking? You and a friend are out in a restaurant and all of a sudden, they start choking. I'm going to have my friend Hannah come over here. We're out, we're having a good time, we're eating and all of the sudden, she seems like she's choking. First, you ask, "Are you OK"? Oftentimes, the international sign for choking is this. I can't breathe. Something's going on. If you're around other people, you want to get them to help you. If you're in a restaurant or place of business, have someone call out for help and have the people help you out. Tell them what you're doing. Don't just attack them because that will just heighten their anxiety and their panic. What you're going to do is, you're going to stand behind them and you're going to wrap your arms all away around. You find their belly button with your pinky. Make a fist.

Put the pinky on the bellybutton, then roll it up so the knuckle of your thumb is right there and then you thrust. You pull it in and up, but I'm not going to do it as hard. In and up. In and up until they can dislodge whatever is in there and they can breathe again. Don't go crazy like in the movies and start slapping their back and wrestling. Sometimes people get carried away and they want to slap your back. They just end up hurting you. If the person is pregnant or a larger person and you can't get your arms all away around to where their belly button is, you want to go higher, up to where their breastbone is. So, say Hannah is pregnant - Congratulations!

You wrap around. You find their breastbone. You do the same thing. In and up. In and up until they dislodge whatever is in their throat and they can breathe again. If the person is so big, if you're a small person, and you have a big strapping person with you who's choking and you just can't even do that. You can assist them in doing a self Heimlich maneuver on a chair or surface that will get to their diaphragm. You just lean them over. Talk them through it.

Stay calm. The more panicky you get, the more panicky they're going to get. They're already in a state of anxiety because they can't breathe, which is normal. If they lose consciousness and they fall to the floor, you're going to lay them down. You're going to roll them over and then you're going to do the same thing. You're going to find the bellybutton, roll up, and you're going to thrust while they're on the floor until that comes out or until help arrives. Continue trying to do the thrusts and trying to get them to get that out of their throat so they can breathe again. Stay with them until help arrives.

Germany says it has carried out its first deportation of convicted Afghan offenders since the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan three years ago, a week after three people were fatally stabbed at a street festival in the western town of Solingen.

The killings shocked Germany and sparked an intense debate over asylum rules when it emerged the main suspect was a 26-year-old Syrian refugee facing deportation. An Afghan man was detained after another deadly attack in May.

The government in Berlin has already announced a series of measures ahead of elections on Sunday in eastern Germany, where the far-right Alternative for Germany is riding high in the polls.

The last country to officially abolish slavery was Mauritania in 2007. Nevertheless, there are an estimated 40.3 million people worldwide subject to some form of modern slavery. The most common form of modern slave trade is commonly referred to as human trafficking. In other areas, slavery (or unfree labour) continues through practices such as debt bondage, the most widespread form of slavery today, serfdom, domestic servants kept in captivity, certain adoptions in which children are forced to work as slaves, child soldiers, and forced marriage.

This is my unedited practice session. I’m learning to use the pentatonic scale melodically.

I’m still stuck on this scale but I know other scales and hoping to branch out. What I’ve achieved however is not just playing up and down the scale but incorporating phrases.

I made a lot of mistakes in this video but that is why it’s called “Practice”.

Apologies for not recording the full body of the guitar. I didn’t intend to post this anywhere but maybe next time, I’ll do better.

This mesmerizing documentary appears in the 5 Stars Collection DVD of the restored movie. This is a fascinating account of a story as moving and tragic as the movie itself. One of the best "makings of" out there. It is mandatory viewing for any serious movie fan.

McCandliss carries out research that seeks to connect our understanding about changes in children's brain structure and function to specific aspects of education. This work asks questions such as how educational learning experiences reshape the brain networks that support a child's basic cognitive skills such as paying attention, reading and mathematics. He is well known for his basic laboratory-based research on the brain mechanisms of attention and studies of how specific learning experiences can change brain activity patterns related to reading skills, yet also for carrying out educational research in school-based studies to investigate the impact of these ideas in "real-world" educational interventions. His research with children and adults include several ways of looking at brain function and structure, including fMRI, ERP and DTI studies of the brain mechanisms that help explain individual differences in basic cognitive skills, including those with special needs.

Dr. McCandliss has published over 50 scientific papers across the fields of neuroscience, psychology, education, and developmental disabilities. He has received several awards including induction in Phi Beta Kappa, the John Merck Scholars Award in the Biology of Developmental Disabilities in Children, and a commendation from the President of the United States (PECASE-award) for outstanding contributions to science. He received his PhD from the University of Oregon in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience before going on for advanced post-doctoral training in neuroimaging at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. In 1999 he became a founding faculty member of the Sackler Institute for Developmental Psychobiology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Currently, Dr. McCandliss is a full Professor at Vanderbilt University, where he holds the Patricia and Rodes Hart Chair of Psychology and Human Development and serves as the director of the Educational Neuroscience Lab, and serves on the steering committee for the Vanderbilt Educational Neuroscience Initiative.

Kellner said there are multiple cases open for charges of home invasion, burglary and theft as police and law enforcement focus on rooting out the gangs before the problem gets worse.

Recent viral video shows several armed men in an Aurora, Colorado, apartment that some say has been taken over by members of Tren de Aragua, a notorious Venezuelan gang.

"I've heard criticism from some folks saying things like 'This is imaginary,'" Kellner continued. "I can tell you the people in this apartment complex, the people of aura, it's not imaginary.

"This is a real example of how cities across the country that are extremely far away from our border are dealing with the impacts of a failed border policy."

The district attorney pointed to previous initiatives combating members of the Mexican gang MS-13 that attempted to plant roots in the city.


The apartment building has been overrun by alleged gang members, according to one resident. (Council member Danielle Jurinsky)

"We indicted over a dozen members of that gang, prosecuted them for multiple murders, multiple shootings, violent crimes, and several of them are spending the next few decades looking back on their life choices in prison and regretting them," Kellner said. "And some of them are spending the rest of their lives in prison in Colorado."

Lauren and J. Luis will discuss how simple commercial board games can illustrate key principles of international relations.

How can professors of international relations bring their teaching to life? As the pedagogical benefits of interactive learning become increasingly clear, educators have explored exercises from simulations to staff rides to debates that can supplement more traditional learning. In this session, Lauren discusses how playing simple, commercial board games can be a useful classroom activity. Games like Diplomacy, Memoir 44, or Twilight Struggle can illuminate scholarly concepts from theories of international relations to military tactics and strategy. Lauren will discuss her experience using board games to teach introductory lessons on international relations, highlighting challenges and opportunities for scholars and practitioners aiming to integrate games into their pedagogical arsenal.

Bio:

Lauren Sukin is a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University. She studies international security, with a focus on the role of nuclear weapons in international politics. In her spare time, Lauren enjoys playing board games and convincing her dog not to eat pieces of board games. Lauren holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Political Science at Stanford University and A.B.s in political science and literary arts from Brown University.

J. Luis Rodriguez is a Stanton Nuclear Postdoctoral Fellow in the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University. He holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University. His research studies how the Global South builds and maintains limits on the use of force in international law and organization. Luis mastered Catan during the pandemic and advises you not to discount the power of discovery cards and longest road.
