How did Brazil Become a Country?

Once Portugal realized that this newfound land was on their side of the Tordesillas line, the initial goal was to establish a settlement with a focus on monopolizing trade, particularly of the widely popular pau-brasil redwood trees.

The liberty cap was originally part of the Roman manumission ceremony, by which slaves were granted their freedom, and this symbol enjoyed a healthy popularity in europe from ancient times well into the early modern era.

It was an ancient Roman symbol which was co-opted by many revolutionary groups over history, starting with Brutus after the Assassination of Julius Caesar, who emblazoned the Liberty Cap on a coin commemorating the event.

It was popularised in American symbolism by Paul Revere, who included it prominently on the Boston Commons Obelisk in 1766, and on his silver Sons of Liberty Bowl, which was later satirised on a porcelain bowl by William Hogarth, which was promptly mass-produced and shared in the form of a print, which brought the symbol into the American Psyche in the leadup to the revolutionary war. So prolific was this symbol, that it found its way into the header for the Boston Gazette from 1770 onwards.

After the introduction of the Liberty Cap into the American symbological lexicon, it could be seen everywhere, from regimental flags to being used as a geographical marker for America on maps produced in France, where the symbol also rapidly gained popularity in the leadup to the french revolution.

The popularity of the Liberty cap was furious but short-lived. By the 1820s the symbol was already in decline, and by the mid 19th century, it had completely passed from the American Consciousness.

Here, it is preserved on an antique saber for an American Cavalryman from around the war of 1812.

The Story of Cap & Trade is a fast-paced, fact-filled look at the leading climate solution being discussed at Copenhagen and on Capitol Hill. Host Annie Leonard introduces the energy traders and Wall Street financiers at the heart of this scheme and reveals the "devils in the details" in current cap and trade proposals: free permits to big polluters, fake offsets and distraction from whats really required to tackle the climate crisis. If youve heard about Cap & Trade, but arent sure how it works (or who benefits), this is the movie is for you.

00:00 Introduction

Flat caps have had a renaissance in recent years, and for good reason. Not only are they warm in the winter, they're classicly stylish and nearly any well-dressed man of any age can pull one off. Unlike the bolder fedora, make a softer statement that is easier and less intimidating to pair with a range of fall, winter and spring outfits.

02:08 History of the Flat Cap

03: 50 How to Wear a Flat Cap
→ Have a contrast between hat and outfit
→ Do shape the brim to your taste.
→ Do not wear the flat cap backwards
→ Don’t wear a flat cap in summer
→ Do not wear a flat cap unsnapped

05:10 How to Buy a Flat Cap

It's important that it fits comfortably on your head.

The flat cap was originally made from tweed by the wool fabrics or sometimes even cotton and that reason you should stick with those materials. In my opinion, tweed is really the best material because it has the depth of color, it keeps you warm, it's hard wearing, and it's just a wonderful fabric.

Sometimes, I've also seen denim caps or maybe leather caps or faux leather ones. I personally don't think it's a very advantageous look and I'd rather stick with the classic stuff. For that same reason, I stay away from patchwork flat hats or multi-pattern caps because they're simply too loud. Just like a bold red or really loud blue and green hat. The good thing about tweed is usually it comes in more subdued colors that suit the fall-winter season. At the same time, the color composition of the fabric is comprised of a range of different ones so it's very easy to combine it with other items in your wardrobe even though they don't match and contrast. So whenever you find flat caps that are either too bold or come in small, medium, and large, I suggest you skip them unless you know that they will fit you and that you'll like to wear them and they won't just be a fashion item that you have to throw away after a season.

Last but not least, if you think a flat cap makes you look dated, just browse the Internet and look for pictures of David Beckham or people like Brad Pitt which are obviously mainstream media celebrities and they can still pull it off and do so on a regular basis.

Long associated with the working class of cities and rural areas, particularly in England and Ireland, the flat cap, also known as golf cap, bunnet, or sometimes erroneously newsboy cap, has endured and spread to elegand upper class country estates. It has known a revival in recent years.

After nearly 7 decades officially at war, North and South Korea may be one step closer to peace with an upcoming meeting between the two countries' leaders. But how did Korea become divided in the first place and how did we get here?

HISTORY OF SOUTH KOREA

The history of Korea dates back to 7,000 BCE when the region was inhabited by various tribes. In 668 CE, the Silla Kingdom was established on the Korean Peninsula, which was followed by the Goryeo Dynasty in 918 CE. In 1392, the Joseon Dynasty was established, which lasted until 1897.

In 1910, Korea was annexed by Japan, and the Korean people suffered under Japanese colonial rule until the end of WWII in 1945. After the capitulation of Japan, Korea was divided into two parts: the Soviet part - North Korea, which later became a communist state, and the American part - South Korea, which became a democratic country in 1948.

North Korea and South Korea
Or the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea

Wait a second, North Korea is also called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea? Hahahaha that’s a good one.

Anyway... Two East Asian countries on the Korean Peninsula that are opposite in so many ways. And yet, not that long ago, relatively speaking, they were just one country. Korea.

Yeah this one’s gonna be lopsided, folks. I’ll start by showing you this, which many of you have probably seen before. One picture sums up so much, doesn’t it. Most already know South Koreans enjoy a much higher standard of living and much more freedoms, but in this video, let’s dig a bit deeper.

That said, since North Korea is such a secretive country, there’s a lot we don’t know about it. But it’s difficult for North Korea to hide the fact that South Korea is doing so much better than it, based on a variety of factors.

Nearly 34,000 North Koreans have defected to South Korea since figures were first collected in 1998. While the number of new arrivals dropped to a trickle in recent years due to strict Covid controls in North Korea and China, they are almost certain to start rising again now that border constraints are easing.

For many, the journey is arduous. Since the border between the two Koreas is one of the most militarized in the world, almost all defectors first flee to China until they can gather enough money to reach a third country, such as Thailand. Then they can apply for asylum in South Korea, which grants them citizenship after a security screening.

Their resettlement should in theory be easier because they’re moving to a country with a common language, culture and traditions. But North Korea’s decades of isolation and lack of uncensored information has caused a wide rift with South Korea.

Once North Koreans arrive, South Korea offers an initial settlement funding of 9 million won ($6,900), vocational training and subsidies for employers for hiring defectors. Many live near each other in blocks of inexpensive apartments, oftentimes the so-called 25-square-meter “rental apartments” provided by the government.

When the support runs out, they must provide for themselves — often leading to grim outcomes.

The unemployment rate for defectors is about twice the national average. Many older defectors retain a northern Korean accent, making them stand out each time they speak. Others bear scars such as psychological trauma or physical problems such as lung damage from digging for coal in unsafe mines with no protective equipment.

Nearly 90% of defectors in Seoul said they’ve had trouble settling into their new homes after a decade, according to a 2022 study from the Seoul Institute. North Korean defectors between 2017 and 2021 experienced suicidal impulses more than double the rate of South Korea population, which is already among the highest in the world, according to a survey from the Seoul Institute.

In some cases, leaving could prove fatal for family members who don’t flee. Lee, who defected to South Korea in 2017, and only gave her surname due to safety concerns, could only afford to bring one of her sons with her. When the North Korean authorities found out about her defection, they beat her oldest son to death.

“I am so lonely,” Lee said. “I want to go back and die there — South Korea is as suffocating as the North.”

The North Korean and South Korean leaders have agreed to a 'new era of peace', 65 years after the armistice. At Kim Jong-un’s beckoning, Moon Jae-in briefly stepped across a demarcation line into the North, in a highly symbolic moment

BAKU - Korea’s long and troubled history is largely defined by its geographic position between larger powers. The struggle to find a balance between Japan and China repeatedly facilitated a tug of war that enabled internal division and invited foreign intervention in the Korean Peninsula.

A lot happened in the Korean War, and because of this millions of innocent lives were lost. A country was ruined by the conflict between communism and capitalism. Korea is one of those countries on which many powerful countries wanted to establish their control. Today Korea is independent but cannot forget its painful history.

The Korean Demilitarized Zone DMZ is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula. It is established by the provisions of the Korean Armistice Agreement to serve as a buffer zone between North Korea and South Korea.

Shot in stunning 4K and narrated by the 2018 Emmy® Award-winning actor Matthew Rhys, this compelling series explores six of the world’s most iconic walls and borders. It features the wall between the US and Mexico, the Korean DMZ, the Israel-Palestine Separation Barrier, the walled communities in Northern Ireland, Cyprus’ Green Line, and the now-demolished Berlin Wall.

From the crumbling ruins of ancient walls to brick barriers that are currently under construction, each episode uncovers the human stories behind these walls and asks why they were built, how they affect people’s lives, and what happens when the walls come down. This is a series about hope and unity in the face of division and about the triumph of the human spirit in spite of separation.

Join me on an unforgettable DMZ South Korea tour, where I explore one of the most intense and historic borders in the world. This epic journey is filled with history, including a tribute to the New Zealand soldiers of Kayforce who fought alongside the South Koreans during the Korean War.

What’s Inside:

Imjingak Peace Park: Our tour begins at Imjingak Peace Park, a symbol of hope and reconciliation. Here, I explore the Freedom Bridge, the Steel Horse locomotive, and other poignant memorials dedicated to the Korean War.

3rd Infiltration Tunnel: Next, we venture underground into the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, an invasion route built by North Korea, lying beneath the border. Walking through this tunnel is a powerful reminder of the ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula.

Dora Observatory: From the top of Dora Observatory, I take in panoramic views of North Korea, using binoculars to peer into the mysterious nation. This is one of the few places in the world where you can see North Korea from a distance.

Majang Suspension Bridge: We conclude our tour at the Majang Suspension Bridge, an architectural marvel that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, adding a peaceful end to a day filled with intense history.

Why This Video Matters: This DMZ South Korea tour offers a deep dive into the history and ongoing significance of the Korean Demilitarized Zone. From the somber reminders of war at Imjingak Peace Park to the thrilling experience of walking through the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, this journey is a must-watch for history enthusiasts and traveler's alike.

The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism itself. After some early back-and-forth across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted with nothing to show for them. Meanwhile, American officials worked anxiously to fashion some sort of armistice with the North Koreans. The alternative, they feared, would be a wider war with Russia and China–or even, as some warned, World War III. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War came to an end. In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives in what many in the U.S. refer to as “the Forgotten War” for the lack of attention it received compared to more well-known conflicts like World War I and II and the Vietnam War. The Korean peninsula is still divided today.

On the outskirts of modern Istanbul, a line of ancient walls lies crumbling into the earth...

In this episode, we look at one of history’s most incredible stories of survival - the thousand-year epic of the Byzantine Empire. Find out how this civilization suffered the loss of its Western half, and continued the unbroken legacy of Rome right through the middle ages. Hear about how it formed a bridge between two continents, and two ages, and learn how the impregnable walls of Constantinople were finally brought crashing to the ground.

This episode we're joined by members of the St Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral Choir in London, and a number of musicians playing traditional Byzantine instruments.

Morocco may not have won the FIFA World Cup this year, but they did win our hearts. Morocco taught the world three powerful lessons that we will never forget. Thank you Morocco.

In a tweet following the World Cup Semi-Final, Kylian Mbappé tweeted to Achraf Hakimi "Don't be sad bro". It is clear that the wins that Morocco have achieved both on and off the field were recognised by many. Yet as Muslims, there's a greater win Morocco achieved we need to recognise.

I went to Brunei back in 2014, three years before I made videos, but my negative experiences in the country have stuck in my mind ever since. That, combined with its absurd human rights laws such as "stoning to death" LGBT members, I felt like this video needed to be shared with the world.

Al Mansur, the Sultan of Morocco advised his allies to invade Turkey. "why invade Turkey which has such little profit and offers so much trouble.... Invade Songhai for its wealth"

In 1590 he wrote to Queen Elizabeth of England (img), to conspire an invasion of West Africa. Al Mansur strategised that if Queen Elizabeth provided him with guns, he could use them to over power the West Africans. Queen Elizabeth complied.

Other Europeans rallied behind Al Mansur to invade Songhai. 2500 of the 4000 soldiers who prepped to invade Songhai were Europeans. The artillerymen were English and Spanish was the official language of the invading army. Whilst travelling from North to Sub-Saharan Africa, 1 third of the invading army perished in the desert, with the remaining 2 thirds being led by Judar Pasha Eunuch.

Meanwhile, Songhai ruler Askia Ishaq II assembled (img) a force of more than 40,000 men and moved north against the Moroccans; the two armies met at Tondibi in March 1591. The battle was swift. Despite their far inferior numbers, the Moroccan gunpowder weapons easily carried the day, resulting in a rout of the Songhai troops. Judar sacked Gao and then moved on to the trading centers of Djenné and Timbuktu.[4] He reached Timbuktu in April 1591, carrying a letter from the Sultan al-Mansur demanding their cooperation.

Judar sacked, pilleged and burnt Timbuktu. Songhai (img) was no match for Judar’s canons and guns. Songhai had no ballistic weapons at this point. Many Moroccans died of tropical diseases in their occupation of Songhai. However they continued to use burnt earth tactics, popularised by Julius Cesar over a thousand years before them, by destroying wells and fields. The allied Moroccans and Europeans took the Gold and converted it to coin, kidnapped the West African Scholars and destroyed many of the remaining books.

Thankfully due to many of the Songhai preemptively hiding their books from invading forces, over 700,000 Medieval Malian books still remain in circulation and are currently being translated by South Africans organisations. But for West Africa, history had turned (img). Once successful Empires of sub Saharan Africa had collapsed and their lands were soon to be ravaged by invasion, manipulation, slavery and an arms race for ballistic weapons.

Task: Africa was previously seen as the richest place on the planet. How has this changed today? Why do you feel this has changed?

The Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the ancient civilizations continues with a video on the Berbers. In the first history video we talked about the ancient origins of the North African civilization (https://youtu.be/qMv9Gyc08P8), while this video will talk about the period after the Berbers adopted Islam and then rebelled against the Caliphate.
