After nearly 7 decades officially at war, North and South Korea may be one step closer to peace with an upcoming meeting between the two countries' leaders. But how did Korea become divided in the first place and how did we get here?

HISTORY OF SOUTH KOREA

The history of Korea dates back to 7,000 BCE when the region was inhabited by various tribes. In 668 CE, the Silla Kingdom was established on the Korean Peninsula, which was followed by the Goryeo Dynasty in 918 CE. In 1392, the Joseon Dynasty was established, which lasted until 1897.

In 1910, Korea was annexed by Japan, and the Korean people suffered under Japanese colonial rule until the end of WWII in 1945. After the capitulation of Japan, Korea was divided into two parts: the Soviet part - North Korea, which later became a communist state, and the American part - South Korea, which became a democratic country in 1948.

North Korea and South Korea
Or the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea

Wait a second, North Korea is also called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea? Hahahaha that’s a good one.

Anyway... Two East Asian countries on the Korean Peninsula that are opposite in so many ways. And yet, not that long ago, relatively speaking, they were just one country. Korea.

Yeah this one’s gonna be lopsided, folks. I’ll start by showing you this, which many of you have probably seen before. One picture sums up so much, doesn’t it. Most already know South Koreans enjoy a much higher standard of living and much more freedoms, but in this video, let’s dig a bit deeper.

That said, since North Korea is such a secretive country, there’s a lot we don’t know about it. But it’s difficult for North Korea to hide the fact that South Korea is doing so much better than it, based on a variety of factors.

Nearly 34,000 North Koreans have defected to South Korea since figures were first collected in 1998. While the number of new arrivals dropped to a trickle in recent years due to strict Covid controls in North Korea and China, they are almost certain to start rising again now that border constraints are easing.

For many, the journey is arduous. Since the border between the two Koreas is one of the most militarized in the world, almost all defectors first flee to China until they can gather enough money to reach a third country, such as Thailand. Then they can apply for asylum in South Korea, which grants them citizenship after a security screening.

Their resettlement should in theory be easier because they’re moving to a country with a common language, culture and traditions. But North Korea’s decades of isolation and lack of uncensored information has caused a wide rift with South Korea.

Once North Koreans arrive, South Korea offers an initial settlement funding of 9 million won ($6,900), vocational training and subsidies for employers for hiring defectors. Many live near each other in blocks of inexpensive apartments, oftentimes the so-called 25-square-meter “rental apartments” provided by the government.

When the support runs out, they must provide for themselves — often leading to grim outcomes.

The unemployment rate for defectors is about twice the national average. Many older defectors retain a northern Korean accent, making them stand out each time they speak. Others bear scars such as psychological trauma or physical problems such as lung damage from digging for coal in unsafe mines with no protective equipment.

Nearly 90% of defectors in Seoul said they’ve had trouble settling into their new homes after a decade, according to a 2022 study from the Seoul Institute. North Korean defectors between 2017 and 2021 experienced suicidal impulses more than double the rate of South Korea population, which is already among the highest in the world, according to a survey from the Seoul Institute.

In some cases, leaving could prove fatal for family members who don’t flee. Lee, who defected to South Korea in 2017, and only gave her surname due to safety concerns, could only afford to bring one of her sons with her. When the North Korean authorities found out about her defection, they beat her oldest son to death.

“I am so lonely,” Lee said. “I want to go back and die there — South Korea is as suffocating as the North.”

A lot happened in the Korean War, and because of this millions of innocent lives were lost. A country was ruined by the conflict between communism and capitalism. Korea is one of those countries on which many powerful countries wanted to establish their control. Today Korea is independent but cannot forget its painful history.

The Korean Demilitarized Zone DMZ is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula. It is established by the provisions of the Korean Armistice Agreement to serve as a buffer zone between North Korea and South Korea.

Shot in stunning 4K and narrated by the 2018 Emmy® Award-winning actor Matthew Rhys, this compelling series explores six of the world’s most iconic walls and borders. It features the wall between the US and Mexico, the Korean DMZ, the Israel-Palestine Separation Barrier, the walled communities in Northern Ireland, Cyprus’ Green Line, and the now-demolished Berlin Wall.

From the crumbling ruins of ancient walls to brick barriers that are currently under construction, each episode uncovers the human stories behind these walls and asks why they were built, how they affect people’s lives, and what happens when the walls come down. This is a series about hope and unity in the face of division and about the triumph of the human spirit in spite of separation.

Join me on an unforgettable DMZ South Korea tour, where I explore one of the most intense and historic borders in the world. This epic journey is filled with history, including a tribute to the New Zealand soldiers of Kayforce who fought alongside the South Koreans during the Korean War.

What’s Inside:

Imjingak Peace Park: Our tour begins at Imjingak Peace Park, a symbol of hope and reconciliation. Here, I explore the Freedom Bridge, the Steel Horse locomotive, and other poignant memorials dedicated to the Korean War.

3rd Infiltration Tunnel: Next, we venture underground into the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, an invasion route built by North Korea, lying beneath the border. Walking through this tunnel is a powerful reminder of the ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula.

Dora Observatory: From the top of Dora Observatory, I take in panoramic views of North Korea, using binoculars to peer into the mysterious nation. This is one of the few places in the world where you can see North Korea from a distance.

Majang Suspension Bridge: We conclude our tour at the Majang Suspension Bridge, an architectural marvel that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, adding a peaceful end to a day filled with intense history.

Why This Video Matters: This DMZ South Korea tour offers a deep dive into the history and ongoing significance of the Korean Demilitarized Zone. From the somber reminders of war at Imjingak Peace Park to the thrilling experience of walking through the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, this journey is a must-watch for history enthusiasts and traveler's alike.

The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism itself. After some early back-and-forth across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted with nothing to show for them. Meanwhile, American officials worked anxiously to fashion some sort of armistice with the North Koreans. The alternative, they feared, would be a wider war with Russia and China–or even, as some warned, World War III. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War came to an end. In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives in what many in the U.S. refer to as “the Forgotten War” for the lack of attention it received compared to more well-known conflicts like World War I and II and the Vietnam War. The Korean peninsula is still divided today.

On the outskirts of modern Istanbul, a line of ancient walls lies crumbling into the earth...

In this episode, we look at one of history’s most incredible stories of survival - the thousand-year epic of the Byzantine Empire. Find out how this civilization suffered the loss of its Western half, and continued the unbroken legacy of Rome right through the middle ages. Hear about how it formed a bridge between two continents, and two ages, and learn how the impregnable walls of Constantinople were finally brought crashing to the ground.

This episode we're joined by members of the St Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral Choir in London, and a number of musicians playing traditional Byzantine instruments.

[WATCH WITH VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JHCfe86A8U]

Morocco may not have won the FIFA World Cup this year, but they did win our hearts. Morocco taught the world three powerful lessons that we will never forget. Thank you Morocco.

#fifaworldcup #morocco

In a tweet following the World Cup Semi-Final, Kylian Mbappé tweeted to Achraf Hakimi "Don't be sad bro". It is clear that the wins that Morocco have achieved both on and off the field were recognised by many. Yet as Muslims, there's a greater win Morocco achieved we need to recognise.

While I constantly try to find the positives in every place I visit, there are a few nations that I just simply didn't enjoy.

The country of BRUNEI is one of them.

I went to Brunei back in 2014, three years before I made videos, but my negative experiences in the country have stuck in my mind ever since. That, combined with its absurd human rights laws such as "stoning to death" LGBT members, I felt like this video needed to be shared with the world.

Have you ever visited any countries that you didn't enjoy? Please share below, I'm curious to know.

Al Mansur, the Sultan of Morocco advised his allies to invade Turkey. "why invade Turkey which has such little profit and offers so much trouble.... Invade Songhai for its wealth"

In 1590 he wrote to Queen Elizabeth of England (img), to conspire an invasion of West Africa. Al Mansur strategised that if Queen Elizabeth provided him with guns, he could use them to over power the West Africans. Queen Elizabeth complied.

Other Europeans rallied behind Al Mansur to invade Songhai. 2500 of the 4000 soldiers who prepped to invade Songhai were Europeans. The artillerymen were English and Spanish was the official language of the invading army. Whilst travelling from North to Sub-Saharan Africa, 1 third of the invading army perished in the desert, with the remaining 2 thirds being led by Judar Pasha Eunuch.

Meanwhile, Songhai ruler Askia Ishaq II assembled (img) a force of more than 40,000 men and moved north against the Moroccans; the two armies met at Tondibi in March 1591. The battle was swift. Despite their far inferior numbers, the Moroccan gunpowder weapons easily carried the day, resulting in a rout of the Songhai troops. Judar sacked Gao and then moved on to the trading centers of Djenné and Timbuktu.[4] He reached Timbuktu in April 1591, carrying a letter from the Sultan al-Mansur demanding their cooperation.

Judar sacked, pilleged and burnt Timbuktu. Songhai (img) was no match for Judar’s canons and guns. Songhai had no ballistic weapons at this point. Many Moroccans died of tropical diseases in their occupation of Songhai. However they continued to use burnt earth tactics, popularised by Julius Cesar over a thousand years before them, by destroying wells and fields. The allied Moroccans and Europeans took the Gold and converted it to coin, kidnapped the West African Scholars and destroyed many of the remaining books.

Thankfully due to many of the Songhai preemptively hiding their books from invading forces, over 700,000 Medieval Malian books still remain in circulation and are currently being translated by South Africans organisations. But for West Africa, history had turned (img). Once successful Empires of sub Saharan Africa had collapsed and their lands were soon to be ravaged by invasion, manipulation, slavery and an arms race for ballistic weapons.

Task: Africa was previously seen as the richest place on the planet. How has this changed today? Why do you feel this has changed?

The time has come to discuss North Africa, but are they White, Black or Middle Eastern? What are the genetics of countries of Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia and Libya?

Today, let's tackle the issue of genetics, admixture and ethnic identity in the modern countries of North Africa from a historic perspective.

I realize the assertions I make about the identity of modern North Africans like the Egyptians, Algerians and Moroccans do not apply to everyone, and that everyone has a different outlook.

Let me know your thoughts on the region of North Africa, and it's very tumultuous fluctuating history and people down in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

For much of the last century, Morocco’s policies were decided not in Rabat, but in Paris and Madrid which is part of the reason in 1987 Morocco applied to join what was then the European Economic Community, the precursor to the European Union. Morocco's Insane Quest to be European was immediately rejected on the grounds that Morocco was not considered to be a European country and therefore could not join.

The EU remains Morocco’s biggest trading partner and is a key customer for its manufactured goods and agricultural produce. French and Spanish tourists account for nearly half of all tourists visiting Morocco in a typical year. The EU also benefits from this relationship as Morocco has become fundamental in essential areas for the Union, such as counter-terrorism cooperation and migration control. Indeed, for an African country, Morocco is closer to Western partners than to its neighbors in the Middle East and North Africa region and the rest of Africa. Obviously, however, this is not the same for the EU. Despite its interest in the Southern Neighborhood, the plans developed for the region have always been of limited ambition compared to Morocco.

Omar Ibn Said was 37 years old when he was taken from his West African home and transported to Charleston, South Carolina, as a slave in the 1800s. Now, his one-of-a-kind autobiographical manuscript has been translated from its original Arabic and housed at the Library of Congress, where it “annihilates” the conventional narrative of African slaves as uneducated and uncultured. Amna Nawaz reports.

In June 2019, an Algeria banned protestors from waving the Amazigh flag. Stating it was an assault on Algeria’s Arab identity. Why? Because the Amazigh are the indigenous people that have occupied North Africa since...well pretty much forever.

Fuelled by couscous these famous merchant nomads once linked the Mediterranean World with Sub-Saharan Africa. Fought against Roman, Arab, and French empires and now battle for recognition in their own countries. They call themselves Amazigh; we know them as the Berbers of North Africa.

📜 History of Dividing the Middle East: The Great Loot - Way back in one of our first Extra History series, on the beginning of World War I, we talked about how at the end of the war the victorious powers carved up the Middle East—men in drawing rooms deciding the fate of peoples they did not understand, and in some cases, lands they had never visited.
This is the story of how that came to happen, a tale of revolts, secret treaties, betrayal, a struggle for homelands, and a British counterinsurgency operation in Iraq.

Why didn't the Ottoman Empire colonise the Americas? Mostly, it was geography and a confidence that it wouldn't change the balance of power.

Spain's southern neighbor, Morocco, went through a tumultuous history of European colonization in the 19th and 20th century, despite being one of the world's oldest independent states. Morocco was in a position, both geographically and politically, that made it unique in the history of the "Scramble for Africa"

The once global Spanish Empire was a distant memory in 1921 and in one of the last Spanish colonies trouble was brewing. The Berbers in the Rif mountains under Abd El-Krim were vying for control and so the Spanish Army started a fateful expedition that would end in one of the biggest colonial defeats in history: The battle at Annual.
