The time has come to discuss North Africa, but are they White, Black or Middle Eastern? What are the genetics of countries of Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia and Libya?
Today, let's tackle the issue of genetics, admixture and ethnic identity in the modern countries of North Africa from a historic perspective.
I realize the assertions I make about the identity of modern North Africans like the Egyptians, Algerians and Moroccans do not apply to everyone, and that everyone has a different outlook.
Let me know your thoughts on the region of North Africa, and it's very tumultuous fluctuating history and people down in the comments below. Thanks for watching!
For much of the last century, Morocco’s policies were decided not in Rabat, but in Paris and Madrid which is part of the reason in 1987 Morocco applied to join what was then the European Economic Community, the precursor to the European Union. Morocco's Insane Quest to be European was immediately rejected on the grounds that Morocco was not considered to be a European country and therefore could not join.
The EU remains Morocco’s biggest trading partner and is a key customer for its manufactured goods and agricultural produce. French and Spanish tourists account for nearly half of all tourists visiting Morocco in a typical year. The EU also benefits from this relationship as Morocco has become fundamental in essential areas for the Union, such as counter-terrorism cooperation and migration control. Indeed, for an African country, Morocco is closer to Western partners than to its neighbors in the Middle East and North Africa region and the rest of Africa. Obviously, however, this is not the same for the EU. Despite its interest in the Southern Neighborhood, the plans developed for the region have always been of limited ambition compared to Morocco.

Omar Ibn Said was 37 years old when he was taken from his West African home and transported to Charleston, South Carolina, as a slave in the 1800s. Now, his one-of-a-kind autobiographical manuscript has been translated from its original Arabic and housed at the Library of Congress, where it “annihilates” the conventional narrative of African slaves as uneducated and uncultured. Amna Nawaz reports.

In June 2019, an Algeria banned protestors from waving the Amazigh flag. Stating it was an assault on Algeria’s Arab identity. Why? Because the Amazigh are the indigenous people that have occupied North Africa since...well pretty much forever.
Fuelled by couscous these famous merchant nomads once linked the Mediterranean World with Sub-Saharan Africa. Fought against Roman, Arab, and French empires and now battle for recognition in their own countries. They call themselves Amazigh; we know them as the Berbers of North Africa.

📜 History of Dividing the Middle East: The Great Loot - Way back in one of our first Extra History series, on the beginning of World War I, we talked about how at the end of the war the victorious powers carved up the Middle East—men in drawing rooms deciding the fate of peoples they did not understand, and in some cases, lands they had never visited.
This is the story of how that came to happen, a tale of revolts, secret treaties, betrayal, a struggle for homelands, and a British counterinsurgency operation in Iraq.

Why didn't the Ottoman Empire colonise the Americas? Mostly, it was geography and a confidence that it wouldn't change the balance of power.

Spain's southern neighbor, Morocco, went through a tumultuous history of European colonization in the 19th and 20th century, despite being one of the world's oldest independent states. Morocco was in a position, both geographically and politically, that made it unique in the history of the "Scramble for Africa"

The once global Spanish Empire was a distant memory in 1921 and in one of the last Spanish colonies trouble was brewing. The Berbers in the Rif mountains under Abd El-Krim were vying for control and so the Spanish Army started a fateful expedition that would end in one of the biggest colonial defeats in history: The battle at Annual.

“Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” - ‘Unity in Diversity’ - that is Indonesia’s national motto. But what happens when respect for that diversity collapses? That’s exactly what happened in 1965 when a wave of violence swept across the nation taking the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
Today on A Day In History, we’ll take you through the horrific Indonesian Mass Killings of 1965 and 1966. From the coup that started it all through the mass graves and executions, and the US support that enabled it all.
But first, if you like this sort of content, subscribe to our channel and leave a like if you enjoy this video.
Indonesia under Sukarno
Indonesia in the 1960s was caught in a delicate balancing act at home and abroad. President Sukarno, a hero of Indonesian independence and the President since 1945, had consolidated the political, ethnic, and religious interests of his people into a relatively stable government. He had also forged a successful middle-path in the Cold War, maintaining good relations with both Moscow and Washington while being a leading light in the global Non-Aligned Movement.
At home, Sukarno was concerned with maintaining balance between the three most powerful forces in Indonesian politics, which he once called the “three spirits” of his country: Islam, communism, and nationalism (or more accurately the military).
Indonesia’s Communist Party (PKI) boasted an estimated 2 million or more members, making it the largest non-ruling Communist party in the world. Communists had tried and failed to revolt before in 1948, but their sheer popularity kept them relevant and powerful. While Sukarno himself was no Communist, he had left-leaning tendencies that kept the Communists from outright opposing him.
As a Muslim and the figurehead of the independence movement, Sukarno enjoyed reliable support from devoted Muslims and nationalists, although both had their reservations about him. More importantly, both groups deeply distrusted the communists. The right-leaning nationalists and military brass had a natural distaste for them, and Communism’s alternative morality and hostility to religion made it plenty of enemies among the Muslim faithful.
Sukarno was good at this balancing act for a while, but in 1965, that balance broke down and millions suffered for it.

REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA
n 1602, the Dutch established the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Indonesia and became the dominant European power by 1610. The VOC was formally dissolved in 1798, and the government of the Netherlands established the Dutch East Indies under government control.
The Japanese invasion and occupation during WWII ended Dutch rule and encouraged the previously suppressed independence movement. After the surrender of Japan in 1945, Sukarno, influential nationalist leader, proclaimed Indonesian independence and was appointed president.

The Majapahit Empire was the largest empire in Southeast Asia & the centre of the world-famous Spice Trade that stretched from China to Europe. Host Peter Lee starts off on the island of Java to see why it was so suited to cultivating rice, used to make exchanges with merchants from the Spice Islands. As demand for spices took off around the world, geography and timing of seasonal sailing winds saw Java grow into the centre for the global spice trade, which enriched Majapahit with luxury trade goods from all over the world.
With increased riches, the empire is said to have unified Indonesia’s islands into one nation. Peter travels to Sulawesi to see why the relationship between Majapahit Java and its outer islands was more nuanced than conqueror and subject. Today, the legacy of a united Indonesia under the Majapahit still looms large, where different groups hark back to the era in the face of increasing intolerance and conflict within the island state.

The history of Indonesia has been shaped by its geographic position, its natural resources, a series of human migrations and contacts, wars and conquests, as well as by trade, economics and politics. Indonesia is an archipelagic country of 17,000 to 18,000 islands stretching along the equator in South East Asia. The country's strategic sea-lane position fostered inter-island and international trade; trade has since fundamentally shaped Indonesian history. The area of Indonesia is populated by peoples of various migrations, creating a diversity of cultures, ethnicities, and languages. The archipelago's landforms and climate significantly influenced agriculture and trade, and the formation of states. The boundaries of the state of Indonesia match the 20th-century borders of the Dutch East Indies.
Fossilised remains of Homo erectus and his tools, popularly known as the "Java Man", suggest the Indonesian archipelago was inhabited by at least 1.5 million years ago. Austronesian people, who form the majority of the modern population, are thought to have originally been from Taiwan and arrived in Indonesia around 2000 BCE. From the 7th century CE, the powerful Srivijaya naval kingdom flourished bringing Hindu and Buddhist influences with it. The agricultural Buddhist Sailendra and Hindu Mataram dynasties subsequently thrived and declined in inland Java. The last significant non-Muslim kingdom, the Hindu Majapahit kingdom, flourished from the late 13th century, and its influence stretched over much of Indonesia. The earliest evidence of Islamised populations in Indonesia dates to the 13th century in northern Sumatra; other Indonesian areas gradually adopted Islam which became the dominant religion in Java and Sumatra by the end of the 16th century. For the most part, Islam overlaid and mixed with existing cultural and religious influences.
Europeans such as the Portuguese arrived in Indonesia from the 16th century seeking to monopolise the sources of valuable nutmeg, cloves, and cubeb pepper in Maluku. In 1602, the Dutch established the Dutch East India Company and became the dominant European power by 1610. Following bankruptcy, the VOC was formally dissolved in 1800, and the government of the Netherlands established the Dutch East Indies under government control. By the early 20th century, Dutch dominance extended to the current boundaries. The Japanese invasion and subsequent occupation in 1942–45 during WWII ended Dutch rule, and encouraged the previously suppressed Indonesian independence movement. Two days after the surrender of Japan in August 1945, nationalist leader Sukarno declared independence and became president. The Netherlands tried to reestablish its rule, but a bitter armed and diplomatic struggle ended in December 1949, when in the face of international pressure, the Dutch formally recognised Indonesian independence.
