Amish Farming Is Something ALL Farmers Can Still Learn From Today!

Welcome back to Down On The Farm. Today on this channel, we will be talking about how the Amish farm and what can we learn from them? There are many things we can learn from the Amish. One is their simple way of living as well as the kind of community they have.

When it comes to farming, the Amish is quite known for it. The Amish people are very strict on their religious values. As much as possible, they do not want to use technology. Instead of using tractors, they often preferred using horses when they wanted to plant and plow the fields. Watch this video to know more about how the Amish farm and what can we learn from them?

Methane (CH4) accounts for about 20% of the greenhouse effect and is 34 times stronger than carbon dioxide (CO2). However, it disappears from the atmosphere much faster. Therefore, methane offers great opportunities to counteract global warming and climate change.

Of all the methane produced in the Netherlands, 70% originates from livestock farming. Wageningen Livestock Research investigates ways of limiting methane emissions. Want to learn more? Visit https://www.wur.eu/methane.

Despite their seemingly innocent appearance, the wild boar and the white-tailed deer are known to be two of the most devastating wildlife species to agriculture in the United States. In addition, coyotes are also the most annoying predators for ranchers.
According to a report by farmers in Texas and California in 2021, wild boar cost them about $1.7 billion. In particular, the vegetable production industry in California has lost about $ 650 million due to wildlife.

Storing Dahlia tubers the EASY WAY! Here's how to dig and store dahlia tubers. Digging and storing dahlia tubers can seem hard, but I've found that storing the tubers "dirty" in clumps is an easy method that has worked for me for many years. There is no one "right" way to store dahlia tubers, rather you just need to find the best storage for your particular situation. Here are the steps I use for storing dahlias dirty in clumps.
- After the first frost wait 1-2 weeks before you start digging your dahlia tubers. This will allow their skins to toughen up and cure for storage. If there is any threat of a freeze dig the dahlias immediately
- Label your dahlias using flagging tape and a waterproof marker
- After 1-2 weeks of curing cut the plants back to 4 inches
- Use a pitchfork to gently loosen the soil around the tubers being careful not to damage them. Lift the tubers and brush off excess soil.
- Place the tubers upside down in open brown paper bags of bulb crates and allow them to dry in a cool dark place for a few days. Do not allow the tubers to freeze. ( I use our detached, unheated garage)
- After drying place the tubers into brown paper bags, roll the tops of the bags down, and place the bags into cardboard boxes
- Store in a location that is 40-50 degrees F and 70% humidity (I use our unheated basement)
- Check the tubers at least once a month for any signs of mold, rot, sprouting, or shriveling, and make any necessary adjustments to their storage location and medium

Dahlias can be grown in hardiness zones 3-11, and in zones 8-11 the tubers may be left in the ground year-round. They are sold as single tubers or a clump of tubers around a stem. Tubers will look vastly different depending on variety, so don't worry about the size or shape of your tuber, these factors don’t determine the plants success.

Dahlias should not be planted outdoors until after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to 60 degrees F. If you garden in a cold climate, you can get your dahlias tubers started 4-6 weeks early by planting them in pots -- either indoors or in a greenhouse. For more information on starting Dahlias inside visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iohdxm9WK48

Dahlias need full sun and loose, rich, well-draining soil. Before planting, add a generous 2-3 inch layer of compost into the bed. Next, dig a hole that is 4-6 inches deep and place the tuber in the hole with the eye of the tuber facing upwards, and then cover it with soil.

If you're growing a dahlia variety that will be more than 3 feet tall, the plants should be staked at planting time to support the stems and flowers as they grow. Place a strong 5-6 foot stake near the tuber, and as the plant grows, use twine to tie the stems to the stake every 12-18 inches.

Don't water the tubers upon planting. Since the tubers have no roots at this time, watering immediately after planting can cause the tubers to rot before they are able to sprout and grow roots. It’s fine if it rains, but no additional watering is necessary until you see the green sprouts emerge from the ground. Depending on the variety and growing conditions, it can take a few weeks to a full month for a tuber to sprout.

Once you see green growth emerge, you can start to water your dahlias. Give them a weekly soak of 1-2 inches of water if the weather does not provide it naturally. In the extreme heat of summer biweekly watering may be necessary. Watering needs will vary based on location, weather, and soil.

Pinch your dahlias to encourage more branching and therefore more blooms. Once the plants have 3-4 sets of leaves, snip the top of the plant off right above a set of leaves. This pinch will cause the plant to send up multiple stems from below the cut, which will result in more flowering stems and a bushier plant.

Keep your Dahlias producing loads of flowers by deadheading spent blooms regularly, or cut bunches of blooms to bring inside and enjoy. Dahlias are truly a cut and come again flower. The more you cut the more they come!

I have created around 150 Tuber Melanosporum Truffle Trees for my farm. Information about creating trees infected with mycorrhizal fungi from the truffle family is hard to find. So I have decided to wing it and see how i go about with a method I thought might work. I have used dried melanosporum fruit body, ground up and added to a slurry of wet perlite. From here Holm Oak acorn seeds were placed in the slurry and allowed to germinate. Once they germinated I moved them to pots of soil.

The soil I amended with calcium carbonate to raise the ph to a level suitable for truffle species. The ph should shift to around 7.5, given time.

I am unsure if this experiment will work, but fingers crossed it does.

I’ve been getting lots of questions from people growing dahlias from seed for the first time who are wondering how to save the ones they like. Dahlia seedlings will actually produce a tiny clump of tubers by the end of the growing season that can be dug up and saved! I thought you might like to see the difference between a seedling clump and a regular tuber clump.

Joe visits Ken and Martha Laing on their organic farm in St Thomas, Ontario. This 93 acre farm has been in Martha's family since the 1820's and they took over in 1979. They operated a pick-your-own fruit farm for 17 years. Once they decided to go organic they were not able to make it profitable. In 1997 they converted to a CSA, headed up by Martha and their daughter Ellen. It turned out to be the most profitable business they have. It is particularly well suited to the use of draft horse power. They eventually offered education in CSA farming and draft horse power in exchange for labor during the growing season.

In the third of our three-part series on the Laings, Ken walks his cereal grain fields and explains the hows and whys of his planting methods and research.

We start in Ken's oat and barley fields. He points out that these fields had no fertility inputs in the previous year. He shows how you can see the where cover crops were planted in previous years by looking at the grain output and the weed control. These are all an indication of soil health.

Next we visit his tomato hoop house and the adjacent plot used in alternate years. One is cover cropped with crimson clover and the other with a oat/barley/pea mix.

Next we visit a switch grass field that is a cover crop used as green manure or mulch.

Then he shows us a beautiful crop of Sangaste Rye originally from Estonia. It is planted with red clover for soil fertility.

His Spring Grain fields have legume and grass planted at the same time which established a grazing field once the grains are harvested.

Off to check the compost piles. They are made up of cow, chicken and horse manure. Ken monitors the temperature and ultimately wants it to reach 150 degrees F in order to kill weed seeds. He had piles of gypsum and dolomitic limestone to mix with the compost when needed.

Ken explains how he got started with draft horses. He started with grade Belgians and switched to Suffolks in 1994 after attending a Suffolk Horse Association meeting in the US. He eventually became a breeder.

Next off the the winter wheat field which is used by a local baker to make flour and bread. He uses Redeemer and Harvard as well a some Sirvinta (also from Estonia) wheat varieties.

Lastly, Ken takes us into a building to show us a Meadow Mill with sifter used to remove some of the bran. It is used to grind spelt, rye and hard winter wheat. It is no longer used by his baker because of its low output. He shows us the wood fired baking oven that used to be used to make the breads.
