THE 2019 GEORGE DANIELS LECTURE AT CITY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON. Synopsis____After an early career restoring vintage English pocket watches and servicing modern mechanical wristwatches, Dr. Roger Smith OBE started making watches thirty years ago. Today, as Britain’s most highly regarded watchmaker, Dr. Smith will discuss developments in modern mechanical wristwatches and will propose that, in recent decades, this has led to a regression, rather than a progression of the practical qualities of watches. Dr. Smith will share his own observations from developing mechanical wristwatches and offer his own solutions to improving longevity and performance............Short biography____Roger W. Smith’s horological career began, aged 16, at the Manchester School of Horology. He passed out top of his class and was awarded the British Horological Institute’s Bronze Medal. During the course, Dr. George Daniels (1926 - 2011), was a visiting speaker and inspired Roger’s ambition - to hand-make watches. After eventually working alongside Dr. Daniels to create the Millennium Series of watches, Roger established his own studio in the Isle of Man in 2001. His first creation was the Series 1 followed, in 2006, by his seminal Series 2 watch. In 2012, the British Horological Institute awarded Roger the Barrett Silver Medal in recognition of his ‘Dedication to continuing the finest traditions of English watchmaking’. In 2013, Roger was invited by the UK Prime Minister’s office to become an Ambassador for the GREAT Britain campaign, representing the best of British innovation, technology and creativity. To celebrate these values, Roger designed and made the now iconic ‘Great Britain’ watch. In 2015, Roger Smith announced the first range of authentic British watches for decades. The range comprises reimagined Series 1 and 2 watches, newly developed Series 3 and 4 watches and the Series 5 or Open Dial watch. All feature Roger’s latest evolution of his single-wheel co-axial escapement. In 2018, Roger was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for ‘outstanding services to watchmaking’.In 2019, Birmingham City University awarded Roger an honorary Doctorate in recognition of his advancements in horology.

It would be a shame if we didn't mention a brand like Rolex who has the most recognized watch brand in the world with literally 100% brand recognition. But though they are the most famous of all famous watch brands, let's just them for their watchmaking skills not just for their popularity. Rolex produces some rather amazing watches; and lots of them. It is estimated that their production is approximately 2,000 watches per day. One of the things about this most famous watch brand is that people rant and rave about the fact that they have a higher average resale value than any other watch brand on the market. This can directly be attributed to the fact that Rolex is if not the most, certainly one of the most valuable watch brands in the world.

Behind the scenes (Part One) of the Bvlgari "Octo Finissimo" cases and dials! We are sure: the beautiful name "Octo Finissimo" alone is enough to get you in the mood, and we haven't even mentioned the in-house manufactured dials and cases yet.

But it is precisely the latter that are the subject of another two behind the scene 4K-videos...

We were in Saignelégier in the Swiss Jura, where Bvlgari designs and manufactures its own dials and cases. The Bvlgari Manufacture has a very high level of vertical integration, with only a few components for the cases and dials being bought in from suppliers. What was equally exciting for us to discover is the general smallness of these parts.

This is a veritable watchmaking mini mundus!

As we all know, the name "Octo Finissimo" stands for ultra-flat watches equipped with equally ultra-flat movements.

Bvlgari has already been able to present eight world records with these ultra-flat movements and watches.

Now we at WatchAdviser hope you enjoy watching the two videos and I am already looking forward to your hopefully numerous comments...

Another book one should consider getting for their library collection is the Wristwatch Handbook. As the title suggests, this is a great resource for a collector to familiarize themself with how a watch works, and the different complications a watch can have. The in-depth pictures give great perspective to how complications can be designed and integrated into a watch.

A fantastic reference work for the novice or the seasoned watch enthusiast. Fully illustrated with 470 color photographs and is brand-agnostic. Features a vast array of timepieces from over 90 manufacturers Despite the functional obsolescence of the mechanical wristwatch (our phones and computers tell more accurate time) the early 21st Century has seen a boom in the development, production, and appreciation of all things horological. Whether it is presented to the collector as an alternative investment, as a feat of micro-mechanical technology, or as a showcase of artisanal mastery, the mechanical wristwatch has never possessed more forms, functions or facets than it does today.

The Wristwatch Handbook is written from the epicenter of a renaissance, a place in time between the Quartz revolution and the rise of the smart device - where the mechanical wristwatch is the antidote to the microprocessor and the permanent buzz of your inbox. From the multi-axis tourbillon, to the split-second chronograph, to the sidereal sky chart, The Wristwatch Handbook covers it all and does so with more than 470 rich illustrations from over 90 of the World's leading brands.

The book is separated into two sections. The first section provides the reader with a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical movement. Its chapters explore power, transmission, distribution and regulation illustrating the basic concepts before considering the innovation and complexity that takes place further toward the cutting edge. From the fifty-day power reserve, to the constant force mechanism, and the 1,000Hz mechanical escapement, section 1 will allow the reader to understand and appreciate what is happening beneath the dial of their watch. Section two allows the reader to take this understanding and apply it to the vast range of complications (functions) that exist in modern horology. Each chapter showcases a distinct category of complication. For example, the regatta timer, pulsometer, and monopusher chronograph join a host of others in a chapter entitled 'Recording Lapses of Time'; The power reserve indicator, dynamograph, and crown position indicator are featured in a chapter for 'Power and Performance Indication'; The moon phase indicator, annual calendar, and planetarium can be found in the 'Astronomical Complications' chapter. Once the functional categories are exhausted, the final three chapters explore whimsical complications that have little regard for practical function, novelty time indication, and the 'super-complicated' watch - a rare breed of timepiece that houses an intimidating host of complications featured throughout the book.

Upon completion of The Wristwatch Handbook the reader will be able to identify even the most exotic complication from across the room, and be able to share their appreciation and understanding of what makes it so useful and compelling. The Wristwatch Handbook is "brand agnostic", using only those watches that most aptly illustrate the given subject-matter. As a consequence the book places equal emphasis on the classic and the cutting edge, on watches produced in large volume or exclusive runs, by industry-leading technology or at the hand of a master. In doing so the book provides an unparalleled range of watches from over 90 brands, allowing the reader to determine for themselves which brands, complications, and styles they will build their collection from.

Enjoy!

Wrist watch factories are facilities where timepieces are manufactured, assembled and tested. These factories use highly advanced machinery and skilled labor to produce watches that meet the highest quality standards. The production process involves several stages such as design, engineering, assembly, testing and packaging.

The first step in the process is designing the watch. A team of designers and engineers use specialized software to create the blueprint of the watch. The design is then converted into a prototype that undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it meets the necessary standards.

Once the design is approved, the manufacturing process begins. The components of the watch, including the case, dial, hands, and movement are manufactured separately. They are then assembled by skilled technicians who carefully fit each piece together. The watch is then tested for accuracy, durability and water resistance.

After the watch passes the quality control tests, it is carefully packaged and shipped to distributors around the world. The process of making a wrist watch is intricate and requires attention to detail at every stage. Wrist watch factories are committed to producing watches that are not only functional, but also stylish and durable.

The best luxury watches at or below $10,000 include the Omega Globemaster, Breitling Premier, and Zenith Defy Skyline. In an era when even ten grand is starting to seem like the entry level for a serious luxury watch, it's important to highlight how much luxury watch five figures still buys in 2024. Tonight, Tim Mosso discusses the best $10,000 luxury watches to buy this summer.

Launched in 2016, the Omega Constellation Globemaster Annual Calendar is an advanced level complication at an Omega watch price. For $9,200, it's possible to own a stainless steel Swiss watch with Master Chronmeter certification, an annual calendar, and 100-meter water resistance. When combined with a versatile 41mm stainless steel case and tough tungsten carbide bezel
the Globemaster Annual Calendar is an excellent candidate to be a man's one and only watch.

Style is important for the best $10,000 watches. Omega's Constellation Globemaster revives the beloved "pie pan" dial design from the original 1950s Omega Constellation. Breitling's Premier B09 chronograph takes the same mid-century approach with dials in pistachio green and the the 2024 Breitling Premier B09 champagne dial. Breitling uses a manual wind movement to shrink the thickness of this versatile watch, and a twin-register dial with no date perfectly captures the character of 1950s vintage watches.

Zenith takes a more modern approach with its 2024 Defy Skyline Paris Edition. This limited series of 50 pieces celebrates the French capital and "city of lights," Paris. In the 2024 Summer Olympic year, the Paris games are commemorated by Zenith's Defy Skyline with green gradient dial; it's a limited edition of 50 pieces available exclusively through Zenith's factory boutiques in France and its French e-commerce site. For $9,800, the Defy Skyline Paris Edition features both a full steel bracelet and a rubber strap. A Zenith El Primero caliber 3620 provides 60 hours of automatic-winding power and its famous 36,000 vibrations per hour beat rate.

All of this plus live discussion and watch collector wrist shots appears tonight on "Watches Tonight!"

Earlier this year, Omega released what was probably the most anticipated Speedmaster – or any "-master," for that matter – in years. The hype was partly pushed by Daniel Craig being spotted in a then-unknown white-dial Speedmaster last fall at an event in New York City, leading to a lot of speculation. After a few agonizing months for Speedy fans, we got a brand new (nearly) fully white-dialed Speedmaster for the first time since 2015's 45th Anniversary "Silver Snoopy" – and this one wasn't a limited edition. It was the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional ref. 310.30.42.50.04.001. And it seems the wait was worth it.

Our guest on the podcast today is a machinist, entrepreneur, and master craftsman.

Josh Shapiro is the owner and founder of JN Shapiro Watches, one of the few high-end luxury wristwatch makers in the United States. His latest line of watches will be priced at $70,000 dollars and up.

His operation uses the most state of the art CNC Swiss and turn mills, as well as manual turning technology developed as far back as the 1500s!

Listen to the podcast or read the highlights to learn how Josh is producing watches like nobody else has in United States for last 50 years.

Noah Graff: First, explain your company, JN Shapiro.

Josh Shapiro: We make high-end luxury wristwatches. We’re one of the very, very few companies in the United States that manufacture watches. We started out just making the faces of the watches. Our expertise is with something called Guilloche, which is doing engraved geometric shapes on the faces of watches, and that’s done using non-motorized, very old school machines. They’re really special. From there we moved on to making our own cases. Now we are very close to having our first prototype completely in-house movement done.

Graff: How much do the watches cost?

The price was $30,000 to $40,000 depending on the case material. The new series that we’re going to launch soon is $70,000 up to about $85,000, depending on material and customization.

JN Shapiro Watch
So they’re very expensive, but we put in about 400 to 500 hours on each timepiece. So much time goes into making each one of those watches.

Graff: How did you get into watchmaking?

Shapiro: I just had a love of old things, so I ended up becoming a history major and then becoming a teacher.

I walked into a local watch store here in Los Angeles called Feldmar when I was about 25, and just fell in love with watches.

One of the first watches I saw was a Skeleton Chronograph watch. There was just so much going on there. It was so fascinating to me. Watches are mechanical. Watches are a really beautiful thing. It’s wearable jewelry that’s functional. It’s fascinating how the gear train flows together. How the escapement functions, the pendulum, just the whole interplay of all the pieces.

While I was a teacher and principal, I was doing watchmaking as a hobby. Then around 2015, I purchased a really nice set of Guilloche, or engine turning machines, and that allowed me to do professional level work. I started producing watch faces, watch styles for other watchmakers, and started thinking in the back of my head of launching my own brand.

Around 2018, I launched my first series, and that’s when I started really reducing my role as a principal, until finally leaving completely two years ago.

Graff: Explain engine turning

Shapiro: The concept is there are cams made out of bronze on the spindle of the machine, and those cams are rocking against the stop. As the spindle is turning, it’s creating these geometric patterns. Then you can phase the cam, independent of the workpiece, and you can create these really beautiful geometric shapes.

It’s an old art. Engine turning machines have been around since the time that lathes came into existence, around 1500.

I have a number of them. The first one I bought, I scraped together every cent I had to afford it. Then, then I ended up selling that set of machines and buying another set of machines. The second set of machines cost me around $30,000. I didn’t have that much money, so I had to sell my 67 Mustang Fastback to afford it.

Graff: How many staff do you employ for making the watches?

Shapiro: It’s me plus seven. I’ve taught everyone in the company how to do engine turning. I have one trained CNC machinist. I have another watchmaker who is turned into a CNC machinist. I have three other watchmakers who are doing various watchmaking tasks and manual machining tasks.

Graff: Tell me about the various machines in your shop.

Shapiro: My first big CNC machine, which we still have, is a Haas office mill. That’s actually a great watchmaking machine, and there’s a lot of people in Switzerland that have these Haas office mills because they’re really, really accurate.

Then we got a Hardinge, HLV, which is like the premier tool room lathe.

And then we picked up the, the (Citizen) L20 from you that was to practice on before we got our new shiny L12, which is getting here Wednesday.

The big machine that we got this year was a Kern Evo. Kern makes the most accurate milling machines on the planet.

It’s a sub-micron machine. We can’t measure sub-micron here in our shop, but it’s nice to know that we’re working with the machine that accurate, that precise. It’s the first Kern Evo used for watchmaking in the US, which is really exciting.

This video is recorded in Titan's Factory.

The watch was developed by inventors and engineers from the 16th century to the mid-20th century as a mechanical device, powered by winding a mainspring which turned gears and then moved the hands; it kept time with a rotating balance wheel. In the 1960s the invention of the quartz watch which ran on electricity and kept time with a vibrating quartz crystal, proved a radical departure for the watchmaking industry. During the 1980s quartz watches took over the market from mechanical watches, a process referred to as the "quartz crisis". Although mechanical watches still sell in the watch market, the vast majority of watches as of 2020 have quartz movements.

Patek Philippe manufactures its own watch components. Like other Swiss manufacturers, the company produces mostly mechanical movements with automatic or manual winding mechanism, but has also been producing quartz watches. In fact, Patek Philippe was one of the twenty Swiss watch companies that founded the Centre Electronique Horloger and collaboratively developed the first Swiss quartz movements, such as the Beta 21 movement (1969) which was used by several manufacturers in their watches. In 1950s, the company even produced a prototype for a mechanical digital wristwatch, Ref. 3414.

Patek Philippe popularized complications such as perpetual calendar, split-seconds hand, chronograph, and minute repeater in mechanical watches. In 2009, the company announced that all of its future mechanical timepieces would be imprinted with the Patek Philippe Seal which requires a precision of -3/+2 seconds per day for diameters no less than 20 mm and -5/+4 seconds per day for diameters less than 20 mm, surpassing the highest industry standard of watch manufacturing and thus abandoning the Geneva Seal.

In 2014, Patek Philippe introduced the Grandmaster Chime Ref. 5175, the most complicated wristwatch ever built by the manufacturer (with 20 complications, but no tourbillon), to celebrate its 175th anniversary. Only seven pieces of Ref. 5175 were created, with one permanently residing in the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. The sale price for each of the other six pieces was 2.5 million CHF (2.6 million US dollars).

SAVE THIS FOR THE NEXT TIME YOU MAKE RICE!

•2 cups rice, I prefer using long grain basmati
•4 cups water (if you need measurements)
•1 tsp salt
•1 tsp avocado oil

1️⃣Place your rice in a stockpot & rinse it 6-10 times until the water runs clear.
2️⃣Add enough COLD water to cover the rice from the tip of your fingernail, to the bottom of your fingertip (video shows you).
3️⃣Add salt & oil, bring to a boil. Once boiling, lower the heat to low, cover with a lid and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
4️⃣Fluff with a fork.

DELICIOUS IDEAS FOR FAMILY BREAKFAST

How do you like your eggs? Scrambled? Poached? Boiled? Check out a top selection of ideas on how to prepare the best breakfast ever! Brighten your morning with a super-delicious breakfast that is the best way to start a perfect day! Besides, all these ideas are incredibly easy to make. Amaze your family with your cooking skills. Start your day from delicious pancakes and mix all the ingredients in a plastic bottle. Take an empty plastic bottle and combine yogurt, eggs, sugar, and flour. And now you can cook pancakes from the bottle. You can even make a cake. Watch the tutorial! My favorite breakfast idea is to make an egg roll with cheese. Try this recipe and you will cook this dish again and again!
The next breakfast idea is the coolest one! I love baked avocados as they are very tasty and look incredible. Cut avocados and arrange halves in a baking tray. Carefully separate yolks using a plastic bottle and gently put 1 egg yolk into every avocado half. Season each filled avocado with paprika, dried bacon, ham, parsley or cheese and bake for 30 minutes. Egg balls wrapped in bacon is a delicious dish you can cook for dinner to amaze your friends. Firstly, prepare the rice and wrap an egg in rice using a plastic bag. After that take bacon slices and wrap the balls and fry. A cool way to store eggs for a long time is to freeze them.
Don’t forget to share your kitchen hacks in comments with us!
