Brazil is the largest country on the South American continent. How did she achieve such a size in her history? Its history begins with the appearance of the first Europeans in these lands - the Portuguese. The Portuguese Empire and the Spanish Empire divided this continent in advance and most of Brazil became part of Portugal. After the end of colonization, the parade of sovereignties and the struggle for independence among South American countries began. Argentina became the first country to declare sovereignty, followed by other countries. The Brazilians, seeing this, were inspired by their neighbors and drove the Portuguese from these lands. After the War of Independence, Brazil expanded its lands to modern borders due to the war with its neighbors

What if in an alternate timeline Brazil wasn't the poor and corrupt nation it became in our timeline. The nation is huge, with boundless resources and people to turn the nation into a wealthy nation, a world leader in industry and agriculture. But Brazil failed to become this in our own timeline. Why?

Well mainly because the Emperor, Pedro II, gave up on ruler ship in the final years of his reign. His male heir had died in 1850, and while his daughters were allowed to succeed him, Pedro II considered a women on the throne a death sentence for the institution. A republican clique grew in the nation, and despite the mass popularity the emperorship enjoyed, Pedro was sent into exile and the monarchy was replaced with a corrupt presidential system, spiralling Brazil down a dark path.

The assembly has decided that instead, they will draft a Brazilian constitution. With the Brazilian party wanting to restrain the power of the monarchy and the rival Portuguese party wanting greater royal power, Emperor Pedro had to step in. Ensuing what is now called The Night of Agony.

Brazilian history class taught by professor Rafael Scopacasa on July 15 at the UFMG Summer School on Brazilian Studies 2019.

The course was held from July 15th to 26th, 2019.

The program comprises lectures on various Brazilian-related topics, Portuguese classes and cultural activities. The Summer School took place at UFMG main campus in Belo Horizonte and all activities were conducted in English.

The U.S Confederacy is a nation that has been gone for over 150 years. But it is still alive in Brazil, in Americana and Santa Barbara d'Oeste. Why does this Brazilian town celebrate the U.S Confederacy? Why is there a festival called 'Festa Confederada' that celebrates the U.S confederacy? Well, because after they lost the Civil War, tens of thousands of American Southerners fleed to a small town near Sao Paulo, back then called Villa Americana. They formed a community and years later this small village became what is now Americana. Some people from there have American blood and they say they just honor the U.S Confederate flag and that they have no racist ideal connected to it. This might be the last U.S Confederate Town In The Entire World.

Super excited about the massive harvest i got from this one, totally worth 3 months :)

At 0:49 you can see when the fungus gnat larvae are starting to munch on everything that's underground. Probably ate some tiny potatoes as well in the process.

if i knew i would have waited a few more weeks so the potatoes would have been a bit bigger. But it didn't look like it was going to produce flowers or anything so i decided to dig it up.

Germinating seeds is infact a simple process. But when seeds do not sprout, you feel disheartened and infact some loose their interest in gardening. But you should always take time to evaluate or diagnose the problem.



Why didn’t my seeds germinate in previous episode on bell peppers?
Here are the 7 FATAL MISTAKES or Answers to Seed Germination Problems.

ROLE OF SUNLIGHT: Do Seeds require sunlight to germinate? For most of the seeds, sunlight is not required for sprouting of the seeds. Dark, damp and warm conditions are best for the sprouting stage of germination. But once the seeds germinate and two new tiny leaves are out, they need sunlight. You must follow the “Hardening Off” Method which means a gradual exposure to sunlight, like 1 hour for the first day, 2 hours for the second, 3 hrs for the third and so on to provide full sun exposure.

Today we're making Bamya, a traditional Middle Eastern okra stew, that is filled with big chunks of Lamb. This stew is packed full of flavour, and unlike most Okra dishes, it doesn't have a weird slimy texture. That's all thanks to a couple of tricks that I'll show you in this video.

Bamya Stew:
1kg Lamb Leg Pieces - bone in
800g Canned tomatoes or tomato passata
800g Frozen small Okra
500ml water
10 Cloves of Garlic
2 Medium Onions
1 Spicy Green Chilli
3 Tbsp Lime Juice
2 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
1 Tbsp Salt
1 1/2 Tsp Black pepper

Tomato Pickle:
4-5 Cloves of garlic
1 Spicy Green Chilli
350g Vine ripened tomatoes
2 Tbsp white vinegar
2 Tbsp Lemon Juice
1 Tbsp Olive oil
1 Tbsp Chopped Parsley
1/4 Tsp Salt
1/4 Tsp Black Pepper
1/4 Tsp Cumin

Vermicelli Rice:
1 1/2 Cup Egyptian/Japanese/Calrose rice
1/2 Cup Wheat Vermicelli
1 Tbsp Butter
1 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
1 Tsp Salt
1/2 Tsp Black Pepper

Limes or lemons for serving with the Bamya
__
Directions:

To make the stew:
1- Chop 2 onions to a fine dice, then add 2 tbsp of vegetable oil to a pot over medium heat. Add the onions and saute for 3 minutes until softened.
2- Add 6 cloves of minced garlic, and saute with the onion for another minute
3- Push the onions to one side, then add in your lamb pieces. Allow these to brown for a couple of minutes, then flip over and stir the pot
4- Once all the meat is lightly browned; blend 800g of canned tomatoes, and add to the pot. Add 500 ml of water and bright the pot to a light boil
5- When it boils, turn the heat down to low, and allow to simmer with the lid on for 1-1.5 hours, or until the meat is soft and tender
6- Once the meat has softened, add your frozen okra with 1 cup of water to the pot. Mix well and turn the heat to medium.
7- Bring the ot to a light boil, then add the salt, and black pepper. Simmer with the lid ajar for 10 minutes
8- Add 1 hot green chilli, after removing the seeds, then add 4 cloves of minced garlic and the lime juice
9- Cook for 5 minutes, and the bamya will be ready

To make the tomatoes:
1- In a pestle and mortar (or a food processor/blender) grind together the garlic with the salt
2- Once finely ground, add the chilli and pulverize this as well
3- Add the remaining ingredients, then chop the parlsey and add that too
4- Make 3 slices into your tomatoes, going about 75% of the way to the bottom, and cutting it into 6 even pieces
5- Fill the gaps with the marinade, and allow to sit for 30-90 minutes

To make the vermicelli rice:
1- Add the butter and oil to a pot over medium high heat
2- Add the vermicelli, and fry this until golden brown, stirring the pot constantly
3- Wash the rice thoroughly until the water runs clear, then add to the fried vermicelli
4- Fry for another 2 minutes, then pour in water or stock to cover the rice by 1 cm
5- Cover the pot with a lid and turn the heat to high. Bring the pot to a boil
6- Allow to boil until the water drops below the rice
7- Now turn the heat down to low, and set a timer for 20 minutes
8- When the time is up, the rice will be perfectly cooked. You can fluff this with a fork or serve immediately

In today's episode of California gardening, we look at a lot of vegetable harvests we made this month, a full tour of the California Garden, Some gardening tips and tricks, some cool gardening products and an update on the Santa Ana winds and the Silverado fire in Irvine.

The first thing we look at is all the insane harvests we made on our vegetable garden. Our urban vegetable garden is not a farm but a small gardening area where we grow all our produce. We look at harvests of Ash Gourd, Bitter Gourd, Eggplants (Brinjal or aubergine), guava, hyacinth beans, ivy gourd (tindora), kidney beans (rajma), Luffa (or Loofah, sponge gourd, ghosali, neeti berakaya), moringa, okra, onion, peppers, radish, spinach, taro root, tomato, watermelon and zucchini.

We then take a tour of the California garden, including a full garden tour of the containers, raised bed garden and the flower garden.

We then look at some things to do, including gardening tips and tricks.

We also look at the Mars Hydro grow light.

We then look at the California wildfires including the Silverado fire and how the Santa Ana winds caused the Silverado fire. Irvine, California was severely affected by the Silverado fire as well as the Santa Ana winds.

And planted a patch of okra next to it!
When spring fades into autumn glory, a multitude of vines and fruits turn their faces toward the sun.

It’s August but why am I thinking about winter? Well for thousands of years that’s what humans did in order to survive the colder months of the year. It wasn’t until very recently with the invention of refrigeration and the explosion of the modern food industry have we've departed from the ancient food preservation techniques that were used to preserve and eat nutrient rich food all year round.

Well it turns out, we actually adapted to eat preserved food and not just fresh food all year round. Fermentation unlocks certain nutrients that aren’t available in fresh food that can provide major health benefits by consuming them in your diet.

In this video, I’ll be focusing on one specific fermentation technique called lacto fermentation (yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut) that converts starches in your food to lactic acid. By learning a simple formula of salt and water, you can pretty much take any fresh veggie you find in the market and preserve it to unlock incredible flavors and health benefits in your food!
