iPhone 5C: How Sturdy?

Now that the Apple's iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C have now made their way in the hands of the iPhone fans, most of them just couldn't stop jumping up and down with glee. Who wouldn't? After the long wait, Apple has now released not one but two flagships that have surely caught the limelight as the blogosphere couldn't stop talking about them.

Talk about the iPhone 5S; it looks pretty sturdy with its aluminum housing that comes in gold, silver, and gray. The sleekness of metal and glass make the device incredibly thin and light along with the great engineered design to compress the device into an extraordinarily powerful smartphone! But, what about the sturdiness of iPhone 5C?

With iPhone 5C, Apple made a paradigm shift with their iPhone generation. As what was talked about in the rumor mill, iPhone 5C is said to be the cheaper version of iPhone. Its housing is made up of polycarbonate plastic-a cheap material-that perhaps had contributed to its cheaper price. Although the "C" in its name never really stood for "cheap" as what was expected, Apple managed to pull it off with the revamped aesthetics of the device-rendering the "C" standing for "color".

But, with a cheaper material, can iPhone 5C stand for a few drops? Good thing apple made swanky iPhone 5C cases that have been cleverly made to mix and match with the color of your iPhone 5C. This case is made of silicone for the reason that it is pleasant to touch. Apple added that the inside was lined by soft microfiber, and that it has precisely drilled holes to support the speakers. However, going back to the soft microfiber, do you think that can withstand a sudden hard bump? Here is where the iPhone 5C mobile back case from Apple falls short.

Android Authority made a drop test to both phones-iPhone 5S and 5C-back to back, so as to know how far these smarty phones can go. They dropped the devices on chest level three times: 1.On the phone's back, 2. On the edge or side; and 3. Facing down.

iPhone 5S was the first one to be challenged, and the 5C comes along after the tests have been done to 5S. After the first drop, it rendered only a little dinged at the back, but not as much. The second test has been done and the edges showed more scuffs, but the screen is still scuff-free. And now, the final test for iPhone 5S, dropping faced down made another scuff on the rim, but the device still stayed intact and that it can still hold up even with a few more drops.

And when it was 5C's time to shine-or to be shattered-it did all the three tests. There has been no surprise that the 5C got more scuffs on the first and second tests. And when it was time for the third challenge, the iPhone 5C's screen didn't succeed, rendering its screen all shattered.

Goes to show, even if the iPhone 5C is packed up with Apple's latest platform, iOS 7, and had a revamped aesthetics, you can bid goodbye with this smartphone in just a few drops.

Apple iPhone: How sturdy? Well, not so sturdy at all. And much better if you could find harder back cases than that of Apple's swanky cases.

Learn the rules to the board game Senet quickly and concisely - This video has no distractions, just the rules.

Don't own the game? Buy it here:

amazon.co.uk - https://amzn.to/45gaJLy
amazon.nl - https://amzn.to/457XnRd

RULES:
The object of the game is to bear your pieces off the board first. Layout the board. Pieces move round the board like so, with the invisible numbers 1 through 30 assigned as so. Setup the pieces alternating like so, with a darker piece on the 10 square. Piece movement is determined by throwing 4 two-sided dice sticks. One flat side up is 1. Two is 2. Three is 3. Four is 4. And all four rounded sides up is 6. Alternatively, you can play with a die but you ignore 5s.

Players take turns rolling to see who can roll a 1 first. The first to roll a 1 takes control of the darker pieces for the remainder of the game and moves the piece on square 10 forward 1 square. Then that player rolls again. On your turn, you move a piece exactly the number rolled. If you rolled a 1, 4, or 6; then you get to go again. If you rolled a 2 or 3, then after moving your turn ends.

If you move to the same square as an opponent’s piece, their piece is “under attack”. Move their piece back to your piece’s starting position and you take its spot. Two pieces of the same color may not occupy the same square; but 2 pieces of the same color that occupy consecutive squares next to each other protect each other from being attacked. If you have 3 of your pieces in consecutive squares, then you form a block and your opponent may not attack or pass pieces over your block.

If you are unable to move a piece forward, then you must move a piece in reverse, still swapping locations of an opponent’s piece you land on. If you are unable to move either direction, then you do nothing and your turn ends.

Square 27 is “water” and it is a trap. Any piece that lands on this square must return to square 15. If square 15 is already occupied, then the piece returns to the closest to the start of the board that is available. Squares 26, 28, and 29 are safe, and pieces there may not be attacked. When a piece would move to a square beyond 30, it is called “bearing off” and the piece removed from the board. You may not bear off a piece while you still have pieces in the 1st row. If you bear off a piece with a roll larger than the number of squares needed, then you transfer the remainder of the roll to moving another piece.

The first player to bear off all their pieces wins. If you want, you can play for points over multiple rounds. The player who wins the round scores 1 point for each of their opponent’s pieces in the 3rd row, 3 points for each piece in the first or second row.

Latrunculi (a.k.a. Ludus Latrunculorum) is an ancient game played in the Roman Empire. The actual rules are lost to history, but modern game historians have developed rules based on archeological evidence and vague literary references.

The NewVenture "Peg Pastimes" version offers two possible rule sets in one package. The first is a placement-and-capture version (similar to Seega and others), and the second version pits two armies on the battlefield with more of a chess-like experience.

The Peg Pastimes series from NewVenture Games is distributed by Red Hen Toys. Visit the link below to get a copy for your own collection!

Games and board games are sometimes seen as a modern luxury, but history shows that humans everywhere and in every-time have invented and played games. As far back into human history as modern man can see, there is evidence of gameplay. So, what did they play? And is the gameplay similar to what we play today?

Hnefatafl was the board game of the Vikings and in this video I explain the rules the way I was taught them. This epic Viking game was popular in many areas and countries long into the medieval age.

We don't know exactly this game was played. The rules probably varied up through the centuries and depended on the geographical area. This is a modern interpretation.

In Mexico, a group of athletes are on a mission to revive an ancient sporting tradition – a tribute to the game once enjoyed by their ancestors.

Thought to be approximately 3,000-years-old, the Mesoamerican ballgame 'Juego de Pelota' could be one of the oldest team sports in the world. It was once played by the Aztecs, Maya and Incas and carries ancient cultural and religious significance.

It was only when Spanish conquistadors banned the game in the 16th Century AD did the game fade into legend.

From the ancient Egyptian game of Senet to the Aztec’s Patolli, games have been played since the beginning of civilization. Today, your host Andre Meadows is going to take a look at a few of these games, including some that are actually still played today, and talk about how they’ve influenced our modern board and video games and why they have had such staying power.

The historic game of Hounds and Jackals - also known by several other names - was rediscovered by British archeologists in the late 19th century.
The game is at least 3500 years old, and several variants have been found over the past century.

Unfortunately, the original rules to the game are unknown, but game historians have devised several possible ways to play the game. I present two of those in this video.

In either case, it's a race game, and the first set of rules also includes elimination of the opponent's pieces. The NewVenture set includes stick dice and enough pegs to play these and some other variants. You can discover them easily with a little research.

This is part of our "Games of Ancient Egypt" set which includes four other ancient games from the area. You can get your copy of the game here:

As always, thanks for watching!

Recently, 'Science' published a fascinating article on an ancient Egyptian board game, that was popular in all tiers of society from 3000 BC to 2500 BC, and experts and the media are calling it the Game of Death. This article is the basis for this video and you can read it here: https://www.sciencemag.org/new....s/2020/02/original-b

Senet was enjoyed by the Egyptians for hundreds and hundreds of years and experts have analysed just how the game evolved through time because thankfully, the pieces of the game have survived in the archaeological record.

We only have snippets of ancient text and a new paintings that show the game being played and Egyptologists believe it was played by two players, each with around five pawns that were placed on a grid of 30 squares which are arranged in three rows of 10. Each player would take it in turn to throw a gaming dice to decide how many squares to move one of the pawns in each turn.

Watch this video to learn all about the ancient game of Senet, how it was played and how the game evolved from an entertaining past time to become known as the Game of Death, being associated with religion and the Ancient Egyptian underworld: The Duat.

Playing a board game to pass the time and spend some quality time together with your loved ones isn’t a thing of modern times, thousands of years ago people were playing games together for various reasons I’m sure.
The oldest Senet boards that have been discovered date from pre-dynastic times and it was a popular game that was played in ancient Egypt for over 3000 years, although around 400 BCE it lost its popularity and there’s no evidence of Senet being played after this time.
Senet wasn’t played just by the Royals, of course the most beautiful boards were discovered in the tombs of the Royals, but the layout of the game was found everywhere.
For instance, the Senet squares and symbols were discovered at the top of the high stone walls from Temples, tombs and other structures, most likely carved by the mason workers who would play the game during their breaks.
The Senet board followed the same format, no matter who it was owned by, royalty nobles or workmen.

Tâb was rediscovered by archeologists a century ago in digs throughout the eastern Mediterranean. It was a game that appears to have been popular with all classes, and traveled along the trade routes as far east as India and west to Tripoli. It’s one of the few ancient games that we know the rules to, because it was observed being played even into the 19th century.
This is a “running fight game” very similar to the Indian game Tablan and resembling Daldøs which is played in Scandinavia. In this type of game, the player’s pieces cycle through a gauntlet of conflict on the board, capturing opposing pieces as they follow a path, usually in opposite directions. Tâb features some specifics about each player’s “home row” that coaxes them into the fight. Staying safe at home is not an option!

This is the final installment of ancient Egyptian games introduced in our Kickstarter campaign in the fall of 2022. The series (and a few supplemental videos) can be viewed in this playlist: https://tinyurl.com/AncientEgyptianGames

I would enjoy hearing your comments, and especially experiences in playing Tâb and all the other historical games in our collection. You can get your own copy of the game here: https://newventuregames.com/products/tab/

For International Tabletop Day 2017, Tom Scott was challenged by British Museum Curator Irving Finkel to a round of the oldest playable board game in the world – The Royal Game of Ur – a game whose rules were rediscovered and deciphered by Irving himself.

There are many strange and fascinating facts buried in the long, bizarre history of the Olympics. The Summer Olympics of 2016 look almost nothing like those from a century ago, and it’s not just the slick presentation and technological advancements in the individual events. Everything about the Summer and Winter Olympics used to be a whole lot weirder and, well, pretty backwards. In many ways, the games have acted as a microcosm of what was happening in the world at the time, for better or for worse.

Check out Tom Scott vs Irving Finkel - The Royal Game of Ur:
https://youtu.be/WZskjLq040I
As part of our International Tabletop Day celebration, Ivan Van Norman had the opportunity to speak to Dr. Irving Finkel. Irving Finkel is the Assistant Curator of Ancient Mesopotamian script at the British Museum in London, England. The two discussed many things, one of them being the oldest-known rulebook in ancient history.

This rulebook is a tablet that dates back four millennia to the city of Ur, and describes the oldest board game in the world. Watch Ivan’s discussion with Irving now!

Most ancient board games, and indeed most abstract strategy games, are for two players. The game of Mehen "the coiled snake" appears to be the oldest multi-player board game ever discovered. The game is will over 4000 years old and embodies aspects of early Egyptian religion.

There are many and varied guesses about how the game was actually played in the time of the Pharaohs. We included a likely set of rules in the Peg Pastimes version of the game, but more can be found in your local library and of course on line. Speculative rules range from straight race games to more complex games of position and capture.

This is part of our "Games of Ancient Egypt" set which includes four other ancient games from the area. You can get your copy of the game here:

This two-player race game was known as "Pente Grammai" in Greece over 2500 years ago. I present just one of several ways the game might have been played. Like so many games from long ago, no details about game play survive. These rules are speculative, developed by game scholars and archaeologists, and many variations can be found online and in print.

Five Lines is a distant ancestor of games like Backgammon, and similar in some ways to Pachisi.

We hope you enjoy Five Lines, and be sure to visit NewVentureGames.com for this and more "Peg Pastimes" games! https://newventuregames.com/products/five-lines/
