He’s the world’s most enigmatic and dangerous dictator, cultivating an air of secrecy around himself and never giving interviews. Ruler of the hermit kingdom, he’s now closer than ever to developing nuclear weapons. But what do we really know about Supreme Leader and ’Rocket Man’, Kim Jung Un? Posing as tourists, we travelled to Pyongyang to experience life under his autocracy. We then spoke to people who knew him during his schooling in Switzerland and investigated the murder of his half-brother in Malaysia.
Born the third son, by Kim Jong II’s second wife, Kim Jong-un’s childhood remains somewhat mysterious. When he succeeded his father in 2011, many thought he was too young and weak to take power. They under-estimated him. He soon removed or executed all of the most powerful members of the regime. The most notorious ’elimination’ was the murder of his older half-brother, Kim Jong Nam, in Malaysia. Two women are now facing the death penalty and claim they were tricked by North Korean agents. We spoke to the lawyer of one of with women and hear from Kim Jong Nam’s friends, who confide that he knew he was in danger.
Thousands of miles away, in the Swiss town of Liebefeld, a man remembers the teenaged Kim Jong-un that he went to school with. There, he was registered under a false name and no one had any idea of his real identity. He spoke excellent German and liked Western pop culture.
Back in Pyongyang, Kim Jong Un recently declared declared that he wants two million foreigners to visit the country each year. But the experience of American tourist and student, Otto Warmbier, is bound to put many off. After being arrested for stealing a propaganda poster and imprisoned for two years, Warmbier died shortly after being returned to America in a coma. According to rumours, he had also tried access a forbidden floor in the hotel. All over Pyongyang – from the museum of American atrocities to leaders’ statutes in the main square – Kim Jong Un’s propaganda is omnipresent. In a local bookstore, the shelves are filled with his books. At the age of 34 – in addition to his career as leader – Kim Jong-un has apparently already taken the time to author a dozen books.
All over the city, people are uniform, synchronised and smiling. But above all, subservient. At all times, North Korea remains a society under control.

Both without passports, they spent 1 month traveling by foot across China, Laos and Thailand - where the South Korean government officially recognized her as a refugee and she was granted permission to migrate to the United States of America.
In this eye-opening interview, Evelyn tells me her escape story and how she has managed to integrate so well into American society. She lives all by herself and just bought her first car (with her hard-earned income!).

This is a video about the Socialist People's Republic of Albania, a state that lasted for half a century and epitomised an isolationist and quasi-xenophobic foreign policy. While today Albania is open to the world and nominally democratic, despite its issues with corruption, in the mid to late 20th century it was ruled by a paranoid tyrant akin only to North Korea's Kim Il Sung - this video intends to shed some light on this relatively unknown period of European history and specifically the life and disposition of one of the most brutal dictators Europe has ever seen.

History of Korea
This video presents a quick history of Korea, a peninsula in East Asia, today home to two countries, North Korea and South Korea.

In 2333 BCE, Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom, was established in northern Korea, while the Jin state occupied the southern part of Korea by the 3rd century BC.
In 108 BCE, the Han Dynasty invaded the kingdom and installed four commanderies in northern Korea. Three of the commanderies fell within a few decades, except the Lelang Commandery.
The Three Kingdoms of Korea comprises Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje. In the early 6th century, Silla’s power extended across the Korean Peninsula.
By the 640s, Silla allied with the Tang dynasty of China to conquer Baekje and later Goguryeo, unifying the central and southern parts of the Korean Peninsula into Unified Silla. Meanwhile, the northern part was under the control of Balhae, founded by King Go.
In 918, Goryeo was founded as the successor of Goguryeo, gradually unifying most of the Korean peninsula.
Following the Mongol invasions of Korea from 1230 to 1270, Goryeo existed as a vassal state and compulsory ally of the Mongol-ruled Yuan dynasty in China.
After a coup, General Yi Seong-gye overthrew the Goryeo dynasty and, in 1392, established the Joseon dynasty.
From 1592 to 1598, Joseon suffered from the great destruction of the Japanese invasions.
In the 19th century, Joseon adopted a harsh isolationist policy, for which it became known as the “Hermit Kingdom.” However, Joseon was soon forced to open its borders, leading to an era of Japanese imperial rule.
In 1897, the Joseon dynasty proclaimed the Korean Empire (1897–1910). In 1910, Japan formally annexed Korean Empire which was then officially named Chōsen.
After the end of World War II with the unconditional surrender of Japan, in 1945, Korea was partitioned along the 38th parallel with the north under Soviet occupation and the south under US occupation.
The politics of the Cold War resulted in the 1948 establishment of two sovereign states, North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea.
In 1950, the Korean War broke out when Soviet-backed North Korea invaded South Korea and ended without a formalized peace treaty. The Korean Peninsula remained divided by the Korean Demilitarized Zone up to the present day.
In 2018, the Panmunjom Declaration was signed between the Supreme Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, and the President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, announcing that they would work to officially end the Korean long-lasting conflict.

HISTORY OF KOREA
The history of Korea dates back to 7,000 BCE when the region was inhabited by various tribes. In 668 CE, the Silla Kingdom was established on the Korean Peninsula, which was followed by the Goryeo Dynasty in 918 CE. In 1392, the Joseon Dynasty was established, which lasted until 1897.
In 1910, Korea was annexed by Japan, and the Korean people suffered under Japanese colonial rule until the end of WWII in 1945. After the capitulation of Japan, Korea was divided into two parts: the Soviet part - North Korea, which later became a communist state, and the American part - South Korea, which became a democratic country in 1948.
The Hermit Kingdom of Korea may have opened its doors since the demise of the Japanese empire, but in many ways it’s more closed off than ever before. The country’s cult of personality is so unlike anything the world has ever seen that it sounds like a work of fiction. It’s a strange cross between ‘1984’ and ‘The Truman Show’ where everyone performs, no one criticises and the rulers are always watching. Who are the rulers? The Kim family, whose dead ancestors remain very much in power in what the late Christopher Hitchens called a ‘necrocracy’.
