COURSE TRANSCRIPT
Before we move on to the specific treatments and procedures, let’s have a quick look at a first aider’s essential tool – the first aid kit.
Different industries, different jobs and different hazards can all lead to different injuries and it’s these injuries that guide the selection of items in your first aid kit. This is why there is no mandatory list of items that a first aid kit should contain. However, the following would be considered a good general selection of items for a low-hazard workplace:
* 20 individually wrapped sterile plasters in assorted sizes appropriate to the type of work, including hypoallergenic plasters if necessary.
* Two sterile eye pads
* Two individually wrapped triangular bandages, preferably sterile
* Two individually wrapped roller bandages, preferably sterile
* Two large sterile individually wrapped unmedicated wound dressings
* Six medium-sized sterile individually wrapped unmedicated wound dressings
* Six safety pins, and
* At least 3 pairs of disposable gloves
First aid kits should NOT contain any tablets or medicines.
Use-by dates should be regularly checked and any items which have reached their expiry dates must be carefully and safely disposed of.
And, don’t forget to replace any items you use or throw away.

Adam French, a trainee legal executive, learnt first aid on a St John Ambulance First Aid at Work course. His skills were put to the test when an elderly man had a cardiac arrest outside his law firm. Adam rushed to help and found the man, Ray, not breathing so pulled him out the car and began CPR.
Ray, his wife Patricia, and the paramedic returned to thank Adam. They told him that the surgeon had said his speedy response had definitely saved Ray’s life and prevented brain damage.

A cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, and the chance of survival falls by 10 per cent every minute without action. However, with CPR and the use of a defibrillator within 3 minutes, the chance of survival could be as high as 70 per cent.
We want to make sure we have a defibrillator available when it’s needed most, to give more people the chance to survive a cardiac arrest. Our volunteers across the country are raising money to buy new equipment that could help save lives – and they need you!
There are two ways you can get involved: donate towards the cost of a defibrillator today or club together with friends and family, sign up to our 3 minute fundraising challenge and fund a St John Ambulance defibrillator in your area. Find out more at https://www.sja.org.uk/DonateForDefibs
The day that Joel stopped breathing he was seven weeks old. The only reason why mum, Alex knew what to do was because she had seen the Nursery Rhymes Inc. advert the day before. This saved Joel's life.
We have joined forces with Tesco to help spread the little known, but incredibly important lesson of baby CPR to as many people as possible.
With the help of Humpty Dumpty, we’ve created a babygrow, which provides all the life saving information you need to help you remember what to do, just in case an emergency should happen.
Tesco will be giving away limited edition babygrows in selected stores (while stocks last) on 13 October 2016 and will be helping to fundraise for St John Ambulance’s lifesaving work with a suggested donation of £3 per babygrow. Visit https://sja.org.uk/babygrow for more information.
Do you know your puffs and pumps? Nursery Rhymes Inc. have got you covered.
Parents told us that their baby not breathing is the first aid emergency they fear the most. We know that parents find the thought of giving their baby CPR frightening so we’ve removed the fear factor and made it as easy as possible to learn.

Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club has an outstanding matchday medical team and 10 defibrillators. The team includes: 34 St John Ambulance volunteers, nine members of the South East Coast Ambulance Service, and three doctors. Since the stadium opened in 2011, they have saved the lives of all five people who have had cardiac arrests. All five football fans have made full recoveries. The odds of surviving a cardiac arrest are just one in 20, the chance of five out of five people surviving is one in 3.2 million. Yet, the fast-acting medical team have managed to defy these odds.
