Live Updates: More Gusty Winds in L.A. Threaten Firefighters’ Progress
Tens of thousands of residents are trying to find shelter, exacerbating a housing crisis in one of the least affordable places in the country. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power warned that it may shut off power for customers in areas with high fire risk as a preemptive safety measure to stop more fires from starting. The outages may last over 48 hours, it said.
At least 24 people have been killed as roaring flames ravage Southern California, in what Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Sunday he expects will be the worst natural disaster in U.S. history in terms of the scale and scope of damage.
Santa Ana winds are expected to flare up Monday through Wednesday, but they won’t be as powerful as those that previously fueled the fires. Authorities said at a news conference Sunday afternoon that they hope to repopulate some areas impacted by the Palisades and Eaton fires on Thursday at the earliest.
California fires latest: Newsom says LA blaze ‘worst natural disaster in US history’ as 70mph winds to peak on Monday
Gavin Newsom has described the Los Angeles wildfires as the worst natural disaster in US history “in terms of the scale and scope”.
The blazes are on track to be among the costliest ever seen in the US, with losses expected to exceed $135bn (£109.7bn).
Speaking to NBC News, the California Governor said: “I think it will be in terms of just the costs associated with it in terms of the scale and scope.”
He also announced a new executive order hoping to address the issue of fraud, price gouging and insurance claims in the wake of the disaster.
Landlords in Los Angeles have been accused of “taking advantage” of victims who have lost their homes in the city’s wildfires, as they illegally gouge prices for those desperate for a place to stay.
At least 16 people have now died as the potential return of high winds threatens to push the wildfires ravaging the city towards some of its most famous landmarks.
