In this video, I am going to show you my secret to making incredible quilt blocks and how to match your thread to the fabric you have chosen.

In the first example, I show you the layer cake fabric that I used in a couple of embroidery projects. The first project is a flower mug rug and how I made the pretty fabrics work for this embroidery design. The key is the layer cake fabric bundles! I selected a darker pink fabric along with a lighter pink/white fabric for the flower. Because the two fabrics are from the same fabric family, they look amazing together!

I decided to take this project a little bit further and work with a complete quilt pattern for in the hoop embroidery. One of my favorite quilt designs is called China Blue from the May 2019 Anita Goodesign All Access magazine. The quilt embroidery design has a lot of different blocks. Some of the quilt blocks have center designs with an embroidered border and some of the quilt blocks are filled with a motif type embroidery design that covers the entire block and almost looks like designed fabric. This machine embroidery pattern set is easy to set up. The original fabric was dark blue, medium blue and pale or baby blue or white. The thread colors are the same - only three different colors of thread. The original colors for all three are dark, medium and light. My question is, how would it look with other colors? I looked at my layer cake fabric bundle and realized that there were so many different colors, it would be easy to find a dark, medium and light of any of the colors there. The prints on the fabric were not too bold, so I thought the busy patterns would look amazing in a different color. Then I selected two shades of opposite thread color for each! I could have just used one fabric background color for the quilting, but I wanted to think outside the box even more and mix and match the fabric and the thread!
