"Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me." Psalms 23:4 NLT
The words "rod" and "staff" come from the Hebrew words, sebet and misha, respectively. The word sebet, meaning stick, has a sense of authority; a stick was used to protect and guide the sheep. The word mishena, meaning staff, symbolizes something to lean on or trust. What are God's rod and staff? His Word. And God instructs that we that we "pay [close] attention to it as to a lamp shining in a dark place". No matter what darkness we may go through, and all of life's foxes, we have a sure Shepherd whom we can trust - FEAR NO EVIL!
