Notes - Exodus 20

God “has a word” with us through Exodus 20.

This is how God wants us to live.

Why the 10 Commandments? To make life hard for us?
Jews lived among pagans who had gods for everything; the Jews had one God.

Perfection?
Why doesn’t God just accept us the way we are?
He sent Jesus Christ to change the way we are & who we are.

I Peter 1:16 - Be holy.
Matthew 5:48
Sermon on the Mount - Be perfect.

What about deeds? Good outweighing the bad?

Problems can be solved if there’s a change in the heart.
Lovenover hate.
A spiritual problem.
Discrimination is solved via this love over hate.
Sin is the problem.
The great separation between man and God.

You and God - a vertical relationship - gives you the ability to correctly have a relationship horizontally between you and your fellow man.

When things go wrong or you hurt someone,
1. Apologize
2. What can I do for you?
Shuv = to return (Hebrew)
Nacham = feel sorrow (Hebrew)
Netanoia = after, perceiving (Greek)
(Think differently after)

Sin has warped our perception of love and evaluation of right and wrong.

The Ten Commandments:
Here is how being set free from bondage will work best for you.

1. I love you. If you love Me back, don’t bring anyone else into the relationship with Me.

2. Don’t ignore me for trinkets that represent me.

3. Don’t use my name to speak of a relationship between us yet live like it doesn’t exist.

4. Set aside special time for us.

5. Respect those who took care of you.

6. Life is sacred. The spark of life comes from God.

7. Don’t cheat; learn to keep a covenant.

8. Don’t take what doesn’t belong to you.

9. Don’t lie.

10. Don’t connive you take away what others have.
