Award-winning chef and TV host highlights Seattle's Filipino food scene - KING 5 Evening

On the PBS show, No Passport Required, award-winning chef and Restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson explores the diversity of immigrant traditions that are now part of American culture. Samuelsson says, "food to me has always told a deeper more personal story." And he found plenty of examples of that when taking a deep dive into Seattle's Filipino food scene.

Filipino Food is influenced by Spanish, Chinese and Malaysian traditions. But it has a flavor all its own.

During his visit to the Northwest, Samuelsson visited iconic spots like The Oriental Mart at Pike Place Market, which just won a prestigious James Beard award. It was named a "2020 American Classic."

But he also discovered some emerging spots for Filipino food, like Hood Famous now in the Chinatown International District and Archipelago in South Seattle.

Washington is home to the fifth-largest Filipino population in the United States.

And just last year, state lawmakers voted to make October Filipino American History Month. Samuelsson says this episode celebrating the Filipino food scene reinforces something he keeps learning with each show.

"I've learned we all come from somewhere and we have a sense of pride. But then we want to explore [...] People are passionate about the United States and also about their roots."
