U-N Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Brussels on Tuesday ahead of a day of meetings with European Union and N-A-T-O officials for serious discussions regarding events in Kosovo and Angola.

Annan has recommended to close down all U-N operations in Angola, following the shooting of two U-N planes, but the Security Council is still considering keeping a small contingent in the country.

Annan also expressed his concern for the latest developments in Iraq and said he hoped that the peace process could find a way forward.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well I think it's unfortunate that some civilians were killed. I would hope that the efforts of the council can bring some suggestions. They are discussing very actively in New York, there are lots of proposals on the table and everybody is trying to find a way forward out of this heightened crisis in Iraq and the region and I hope that they will find it."
Q:"What is the importance of your visit to Belgium?"
"I think Belgium has been a very active participant in UN activities as one of our important member states. We've worked well together and they have been very active, not only in the peace keeping development and political area. I think if one is to come and exchange ideas on the work of the organisation and the things we are working on together. I hope to also visit the European Union and then NATO. Brussels is an important area and I will be having serious discussions with the government, with NATO and with the commission."
