The Islamic centuries remain amongst the most obscure in the history of the pre-modern UAE.

The territories of the present UAE fell within the wider economic hinterland of Iraq and were caught up in the death throws of the ailing Abbasid caliphate, as it struggled to maintain control of the lucrative Indian Ocean trade passing through the Gulf.

This talk examines these dramatic events and considers the wider significance of the UAE in the Early Islamic period.
