EDUCATION UNDER THREAT IN THE NORTHERN REGION OF NIGERIA.

After the abduction of about 300 school girls from Chibok, Borno State, the Federal Government in 2014 launched the SAFE SCHOOLS INITIATIVE as part of efforts to ensure that children in conflict areas or affected by insecurity continue with their education.

THE PLAN IS TO ACHIEVE THE FOLLOWING MILESTONE
Build and integrate security-resilient host communities in the protection of education.
Strengthen the detection, deterrence, and response capabilities of the security agencies
Equip school security, response and coordination centres in Abuja and the States
Regular engagements and policy advocacy with the Nigerian public and key government officials on the implementation of the national plan.

The initiative would be funded through annual budgetary provisions from federal, state and local governments interventionist agencies, foreign governments, Philanthropists and donor partners.

A TECHNICAL WORKING COMMITTEE WAS SET UP AND IT IS COMPOSED OF MEMBERS FROM THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, NIGERIAN GOVERNORS FORUM, NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE, NIGERIA SECURITY AND CIVIL DEFENCE CORPS, DEPARTMENT OF STATES SERVICES, AND DEFENCE HEADQUARTERS.
