The First Day: Birth of a nation

As the United Arab Emirates celebrates its 39th National Day, The National's journalists, over a course of nine months, dug into archival footage and photographs of the UAE prior to union. They spoke to former journalists, photographers, noted dignitaries, ministers and the people who were close to Sheikh Zayed to re-trace the events leading up to December 2, 1971;when the nation was born.
